    I watched 4 over videos on using Accu Quilt Log Cabin dies and Eleanor is the first to explain that there are lights and darks needed for each size! I am going to order my die now. Thanks Eleanor.

    I first learned about quilting from Eleanor. I saw her on a PBS show on a Saturday morning back in the late 1980's/early 1990's. Huge respect for her and all the quilts she's created.

    I love, love, love Eleanor Burns!!! I never missed any of her shows! She is educational & fun at the same time. And the "scrap toss" over the shoulder is great!! I wish she was still doing shows for TV. Her son Orion was good with quilting too. I miss you Eleanor!!!

    I used to sew my own clothes decades ago, but have never made a quilt. I would have loved to have had Eleanor as an instructor.

    Wow. Really enjoyed Eleanor Burns. She was so full of fun. She made me laugh and a actually made my day. But I hadn't watched her for a long time. I just found out tonight she had passed away unless it's another Eleanor Burns. I. Was looking for a star quilt pattern to make. She was a beautiful lady. Very expressive. Energetic. So sorry , my condolences to her family and thousands of fans for sure. God Bless. No doubt I will watch her again.

    When I started quilting, I used the photocopier to print up some "fabric," to use for cutting up to try out patterns without using up a lot of actual fabric. I glued the paper down and placed my tests in a plastic sleeve book. I could add notes on the "fabric," or another page, or write out how I wanted to make the quilt, for a reference. This helped with auditioning fabrics, and buying others, when one or two didn't work so well. My first quilt was a sampler, I made up a large "book/roll," with flannellette "pages," to lay out my individual blocks, and take them to the machine. I can put stiff card in the covers, or take them out and roll up my "book." Now I want to make a few design boards, to Lori Holt's design as well. Thank-you for your log cabin how to.

    Can you explain the die better? Eleanor uses half the die for 8 inch block, but says the other end is for the 12 inch block? Does she mean using the entire die (both ends) makes the 12 inch block or just the ‘other’ end? If using the whole die, i don’t understand the center blade? Wouldn’t the center blade cut the fabric, not making 4 long strips, but 8 short strips? Or double amount of the short strips she is using to make several rows. Is this for more than just the center block & three rows (shown for the 8 inch block) for the 12 inch block, another 3 rows for the other end Eleanor isn’t using in this tutorial? Very confused. I own the die, but instructions are vague. Also, if I want to make the blocks the all the same, this die wouldn’t be easy to do this. Suggestions?

    • @lisayarost1457
      @lisayarost1457 5 років тому

      Kim Hammon , not from AccuQuilt, but here’s how it works: you use the full die for a 12” block. The inner strips are cut with the side Eleanor used. The outer, longer strips are cut with the rest of the die. They are meant to be separate strips, so yes, they are divided in the center.
      You are correct: I the instructions for this die were nonexistent in the package that I purchased. I was extremely disappointed, as this was a very expensive die, and I couldn’t figure out how to use it. Thank goodness they finally posted a video tutorial!
      I don’t see how you could use this die to make a quilt with consistent fabric choices similar to the one Eleanor showcased at the beginning of the video. It’s all one color or a big variety, I think.
      I hope this helps!

      I just came here from a link in another log cabin video. She uses a die that just cuts 1 1/2” strips. She first cuts a strip the length of the longest pieces she needs for the outside strips (dark green, for example) then places it on the die and uses the go to cut that length into strips. Then cuts the next length (med green, for example) & runs that through. Actually, she does multiples in one pass of the cutter. I think that is a much better method if you want specific fabric for specific logs. First time I actually saw the value of these machines. But if the die is $100 about, (not including price of the machine) you’ll need to use it A LOT. But I can now understand the huge time savings. I was very confused by this video, too. Finally realized, the other end of the die is to make more, longer logs, to keep on building the same block to a bigger size. (Not thicker logs, which is what I thought at first.) They could have just given a close-up picture of the die, and it would have eliminated the confusion. I don’t care for the method here, with the log cabin die, because you’ll be cutting pieces you don’t need. You don’t need every color in ALL the sizes.

      Leslie, nothing lasts forever, but I have never worn out one of these dies, and I have used this cutting system for years, even on paper. (Don’t tell...)
      The white mats wear out after a while, but they are not nearly as expensive as the dies.
