Painting kitchen cabinets is always a big project. For this reason many homeowners seek the advice of a professional or hire the project out. In this post I will layout the way many painting contractors price their kitchen cabinets.
The first thing painting contractors assess is the current condition and finish of the cabinets. If the cabinets are currently painted with minimal prep the cost to paint will be less. If the kitchen cabinets are currently stained, are a very porous wood like oak, and/or have a significant amount of prep work, then the price will be more to paint.
The second thing painting contractors assess is the amount of masking and difficulty of access to the kitchen. Masking can be by far the most time consuming part of painting kitchen cabinets. If we have to mask off walls, ceilings, and floors, there is a lot of masking that is needed. This increase the price for painting since it takes around a day just to complete this level of masking. However, if we are also painting the walls, ceilings, and the floors do NOT need to be masked off, then the price will be significantly lower for the cabinets.
In order to get an amazing smooth finish on your cabinets the prep work needs to be done correctly. The first step is to mask off all areas that will not be painted. We will also mask off and setup a spraying area in the garage to spray the doors and drawers of the kitchen. The next step is to sand the clear off of the kitchen if it is stained. This helps the primer adhere to the wood and prevents any stains from showing on the finish. We then vacuum up any dust created by the sanding and then we begin to caulk the cabinets. This step is mainly recommended for kitchens that are currently stained. If not caulked, you will be able to see the stain color in these cracks. After this is completed we will spray the primer coat. It is also highly recommended to use a high quality oil based primer to seal the wood and prevent any stains or chemicals on the previous finish from showing through. Once the primer has dried, we will start to fill in any dents, holes, or gauges on the cabinetry with bondo. This allows us to get a smooth finish on all of the cabinetry. This step makes the biggest difference in order to get a smooth finish. Once the bondo has dried, we will start to sand all of the surfaces on the doors, drawers and cabinets. The next step is to vacuum up all of the dust on all surfaces to be painted. This will remove any particles from the area that could cause the finish to come out rough and uneven. Once the area is clean, we will layout all of the doors and drawers in the garage and begin spraying all of the surfaces. Spraying your kitchen cabinets will always give you a professionally painted look as opposed to the DIY of brush and roller painting. After all of the areas have dried, we will start to assemble to doors and drawers back in their place. Once assembled, we can start cleaning up all of the paper and plastic masking paper from the area. We always strive to keep the areas as clean as possible. However, it is important to note that a fine layer a dust can be created from the paint work. This can easily be cleaned up by running a dry towel on all of the areas affected.
This is all of the work behind professional painting of kitchen cabinets. A typical kitchen is 4-5 days, but can take longer depending on the size and detail of the cabinets. At minimum a kitchen will take 3 days due to the drying process of the paint.
Pricing can vary from $70 a door/opening to $120 a door/opening. These prices seem to be standard amongst many painting contractors in Kansas City and neighboring areas. Although it can be expensive to paint kitchen cabinets, it is always worth investing in getting them professionally done. Painting your kitchen cabinets, for most homeowners, is a onetime project and can increase the value and appeal of your home.

What's an opening like per door?
Hello enjoyed your video. Quick question, on pricing, you mentioned the cost per opening. Example, drawer front, door front etc. So if a cabinet has two doors or three drawers, are these considered one hole or two, three for pricing? Thank you for your video.
Every door and drawer is 1 opening. Imagine every door as a cubed slot in the cabinet space. This is what we count as an opening. Length and width of each door/drawer and the depth of the cabinet is 1 cube/opening. Large doors sometimes count as 2 doors because the cubed space is alot bigger than others. Same goes for really small doors they sometimes count as 1 door although not as common as the large door scenario.
I got the same issue trying to understand the concept.... Perhaps one day you would have the time and chance to make a video regarding this matter......I'm new on pricing jobs, I know how to do it, but the cost of materials and prep work it's what I'm learning ..... I work for a company as a finisher but I want to star working on the side, already did a few jobs but I hardly believe I was not getting paid fairly therefore I'm here trying to get as much info to help me out, thanks and continue doing such a great job 👍🏽

did you say how much that kitchen cost?what type of material ? conversion varnish, precat, latex
We dont use precat for painting cabinets. We dont use latex unless its a dark color in which case we explain the pros and cons to our customers. We dont do varnishing. This video was about paint only.

He said latex for dark colors, I can't imagine painting with latex paint, I only use Renner urethane

Prime first, then caulk.
caulking can crack if you do that. we caulk first then prime so if anything cracks we recaulk before finish.

Yes this guy is also very very low on price, I charge $105.00 per door or drawer not for opening, imagine a opening with 2 doors, he is only charging 60 per door that's crazy cheap

Use a vinyl primer and 1k or 2k top coat. I used to use precat but it’s kinda dangerous so now we use renner. We charge $200/door here in NC

@@bailey2624 Even in upscale neighborhoods, here in Chicago which is a huge town, people would think complaint 80-95 range per door, I cant see how someone would pay 200 per door, that's insane.
I actuality charge $60 a piece depending the condition but that’s my starting price
