Googled the director and producer, Derrick Knight. He just died in 2022. Lived to be 93. RIP Derrick!
I wish we knew what kind of cigarettes he smoked. He cheated death for a long, long time!

I KNEW someone would Say that here.
I'm betting the kind with Lots of THC-LOL.
The diagrams and animations in these old films are so clear and educative.
Very much better than in today PSAs.
You know who else is clear and educative?

My father smoked Golden Virginia tobacco and was constantly out of breath, spitting and coughing up phlegm. It was a pathetic site I witnessed as a child. He died in 1983 aged 69. I was 15.
@hunterluxton5963 I'm 25, my dad's 54. He's constantly coughing and spluttering, can hear him from a mile away. He smells awful too.
Very interesting and almost very scary movie. I was smoking from my 17 and quit it in 27. Now I am 37 and I am so glad I do not smoke anymore. I was not a big smoker, just only a few cigarettes per day, but there were situations I could smoke whole pack and more, especially in pubs or in some vacations. Even as a "mild" smoker, it was very difficult to stop. And I did it by third try. Imagine how impossible is to stop when you smoke packs per day. Big respect to who could quit, its very difficult. There is always easier to not start than quit. My father was heavy smoker, now 71 years old. He had stroke twice by bad artery and he can't talk and half body paralised. Smoking is also one of the reason this came. Think twice before you try to smoke. When you are young, you give a shit about future, but future often do not forgive. Of course there are smokers without any problems even if they are old, but this is not often. Smoking can be very dangerous not only for lungs etc, but think also about throat, tongue, tooths or skin.
Shut up and keep smoking. If you enjoy it then smoke. You’re gonna die either way
@danieloshea3326 no you shut up and quit smoking
My mother, my aunt, my late uncle who was my aunt's husband, my late aunt who was my mother's and my aunt's older sister, and my older sister also smoked have since quit smoking.
I tried smoking once and while I did not choke on the cigarette, I also decided it wasn't for me then and it isn't for me now.
Many of the younger people don't often consider what the future brings, and you are right that the consequences from our choices can't be undone or erased as though they never happened.
You and I are not alone in despising smoking and its cousin vaping.
Keep on sharing this video to as many people as possible.
Scary at the end with the credits and the man breathing
It has to be scary.
Otherwise it could not get its message to people.

I am really glad that i stopped smoking nearly 4 years ago. I really regret starting, i mean i am still thinking about cigarettes some time and i don't know if this will every go away, the risk of a relapse is always there even if i did not have hard cravings for a long time. But yeah i stopped and i only smoked for arround 8 years and every time i see videos like this i really don't want to smoke again, if i would have listend to my parents i've never started but as a teenager you think you are smarter and that you cannot get addicted even if everyone tells you that you get addicted if you smoke regulary, but it is sneaky you are not noticing that you are getting addicted till it's to late and you are hooked, so please don't start smoking, if you are reading it and only smoke at the weekend just stop it, everyone starts by only smoking 1-2 times a week and most of the time it will not stay like this. The dumb thing is you don't even feel good after your first cigarettes, i actually felt pretty sick the first times, i don't get that people like i just smoke again after feeling sick from it, it is pretty schizophrenic to be fair.
The cravings never really go away.
I did not have the same experience of being sick from smoking that first time. But I definitely realized smoking was not, is not, and will never be for me.
It did not help that most of my family members were smokers when I was a kid. They are all now former smokers who have quit smoking.
9:36 So good that I am jazz pianist, I don't need to save my lungs! :D
No, you just breathe other people's smoke in the clubs you play in.
If only anti-smoking ads or like this nowadays
Quality Ad.
Smoking outdoors has made it more possible to meet people... Smoking indoors is rank
This is better than most ads today!
Its not an advertisement, it's an educational film.
In middle school, my science teacher got a small kit to show the things that goes in the lungs from smoking, just a plastic bag and hand pump of some kind, but you could see all the black stuff accumulating in the wet plastic bag, That has always stuck with me, Happy get got it for the class 🚬🧑🏻🏫
8:39 luckily, I don’t see cigarette ashes on dishes in restaurants nowadays……
That made me🤢 when I was a kid
watching this while drunk on cannabis is totally weird
And there's still about 35 million smokers in America today.

Mr. Scientist gets a lungful of second hand smoke every day for his career.
He’s in a well ventilated area and isn’t necessarily breathing it directly from the tube. No problem
@@matthewnikitas8905 Sorry, but wrong. He's working in a small room with cig smoke puffing out all day and he's wearing no mask. Granted, a well-placed and powerful ventilation hood over the contraption would do wonders. The irony, or tragedy, if he contracted lung cancer while working on this.

The native tribes in the Americas took their revenge by giving the world tobacco.
This was all known to the tobacco companies in the late 1950s, but they were not held to account until the 1990s...
Im fucked
I think anything in moderation is ok, i smoke but i dont have any kind of trouble breathing or anything, i have an active lifestyle and it hasnt effected me. Usually smoke 3 a day or so. I also stick to tobacco with no added chemicals as chemicals make me feel ill.
You need to _SERIOUSLY _*_STOP_* deluding yourself and realise that the _ONLY _*_SAFE_* level of smoking is *Z.E.R.O.*
While it is hard and I do it as well, it doesn’t take a genius to see through your denial. Quitting is the only safe way! Good luck!

Why wouldn't it be allowed? And even if it is from the 60's it's still relevant, smoking can kill you, even if you don't get lung cancer you would still be a lot healthier if you don't smoke than if you do, and you will smell better too.

Coughing as well.
I understand the narrators point, but he has a very sarcastic tone towards these smokers & he needs a smack in the teeth.
The money pig has teeth
Sarcastic tone? Brits had no idea of the art of sarcasm until they were exposed to it through low-rent American sitcoms in the 80s and 90s. Brits were still highly prim, proper and direct in the early 1960s and sarcasm certainly would have been seen as a highly improper tone to be taking for such a serious subject. I have absolutely no doubt that the narrator is being dead serious here.
No, you need a smack in the mouth for being a sanctimonious pr!ck.
@@mubd1234 What are you talking about? Sarcasm was invented in Britain.
He's not being sarcastic, when does he say something he doesn't mean? He emphasises it's a bad choice but mostly that the smokers simply aren't aware of the dangers, and yeah obviously young teenagers smoking is usually cause they want to look grown up
A deeply, deeply disturbing horror film. Death isn't even the worst of it - clearly, for the man in the hospital bed and the man walking up and down the stairs, death will be a welcome release. And all this was known back in 1963!
And sadly some people are experiencing similar almost 60 years later
@@Keithbarber It is a pitty that many people will not get smarter with decades going by.
Sadly, there are many people that weren't even born when this was made that have suffered the same fate.
@@khushisingh7403 When vaping first started not many years ago I asked who generally bought them. The cashier I knew then said mostly 21 year olds. After that every single one of my teenage friends was addicted to vaping. People in middle school find it so cool to be vaping in class. It’s the new smoking of the younger generations. They have older people buy them for them. I don’t know what adult in their right mind would consistently buy vapes for children. I smoke cigarettes and I have known several people, adults and minors, who would ask for puffs or cigarettes. I would literally break down crying if they wouldn’t take no for an answer. I have no plans on quitting this time even though I have twice over but I am NEVER going to allow someone else to start because of me. I’ve bought alcohol for one 20 year old but she was already a raging alcoholic. I know cigarettes are messing up my health, but people do not talk about the affects of drinking enough. I’m alcoholic again and I’ve had to quit drinking twice before due to health issues. Once because I was puking bloody the second time because I was pissing it. I lost a family member a decade ago due to alcoholism. It’s a terrible drug and absolutely encouraged more than cigarettes these days. The dangers of cigarettes aren’t hidden at all. In Australia all packs have horrific images of what cigarettes can do to your health but they will even let drunk drivers off scot free. People are smoking less and less each day, drinking is a very different story. Next year menthols and all flavored tobacco will be illegal and I am dreading it. Alcohol is a very different story.
@@khushisingh7403 Sorry that was so long, but it’s all very upsetting.
i'm a social smoker around 5 cigs a day sometimes non sometimes more. I feel out breath faster my nose runny throat hurts idk how people smoke packs a day . Oh and for men lets admit the more you smoke then worse off it is for your johnson dont lie to yourself
I started smoking at 27 while in rehab for drugs and alcohol. Just traded one addiction for another but at least cigarettes arent ruining my life as quickly or noticeably as drugs and alcohol were. Now i just need to quit smoking...
Word
Nicotine is a very powerful antidepressant - sometimes it helps to know that.
You could try gum or a patch. I know it's not for everyone, but for me, I stopped smoking 15yrs ago, and only completely gave up nicotine gum around a year ago.
SMOKING IS STUPID GLAD I NEVER STARTED
I started smoking aged 12 and quiet agsd 25 and aged 53, I haven't smoked in close on 28 years (now just over 29 years as of may 2024)
What would he think if almost 60 years later, smoking is phasing out and vaping is phasing in massively. Really sad, because we’re seeing after only a couple of years, illness and stuff already.
Yes, one dangerous vice has been replaced by another. Why don't people just leave their lungs alone.
@@sandgrownun66That’s the way it’s been for thousands of years and will probably always be that way. Nicotine is a very powerful and addicting drug.
the truth is smoking is not nearly as debilitating as most anti-smoking campaigns would have you believe. There is little difference in life expectancy of extremely high-rate smoking countries (like chile, lebanon, greece) and those countries that have shunned smoking. The only difference is that greeks, chileans, and lebanese only pay 50 cents for a pack while an american pays $15
@@frankrizzo7975 I think it is certainly debilitating but not exclusively so. What I am trying to say is that smoking can increase your risk of developing cancer almost anywhere in your body by a significant amount, but that’s not the same thing as to say if you smoke you will develop cancer because that just isn’t true.
@@matthewnikitas8905
I don't disagree with your statement, it can absolutely be debilitating just like anything taken to excess.
The problem is that the justification for the "sin tax" and obviously unconstitutional laws (like clean indoor air act which prevents people from allowing smoking in their own establishments) is that cigarettes are considered so detrimental to health that these smokers will end up requiring hundreds of thousands of dollars more than the non-smoker because of all the diseases and cancers they will develop.
This is blatantly untrue because everyone will die anyway, it makes no difference if it's from cigarettes induced complications, strokes, diabetes, obesity complications, heart attacks... Stopping smoking doesn't stop your population from every dying. And you dont see a "sin tax" and 21 age requirement for HFCS, seed oils, pornography etc...
At 3:56 you’ll see a helpless invalid.
Is that why when I was younger I always seemed to develop pneumonia after smoking ? Hadn’t smoked since the last tome I smoked a few cigarettes and and pneumonia soon after for the fifth time.
Many adults from this decade went through the great depression and World War 2. There was a frankness about them- they knew the difference between right and wrong and talked directly about it.
I used to watch and hear all the anti smoking psa's, and lectures and think, blah blah blahh. Like yea yea it can kill you....
Until I lost someone very close to me Dec 2021 to lung cancer who smoked for 40+ yrs. Now it's hitting me hard, and I'm angry. Hit me way too close to home 😞
It is sad when people die young but it's the tragic reality
@@Keithbarber How could that person be young, if they'd be smoking for 40+ years? Or maybe, they started as a baby?
@@sandgrownun66 It is considered dying young if you pass away before a certain age
I.e. Start smoking aged 13, smoke for 50 years get lung 🫁 cancer ♋ aged 63, die aged 64, that's considered dying young as without smoking they could have lived another 20-25 years
