I love the marketing terms they used to come up with back then, like "nature-filtered." Hilarious. You can bet Robert Burns cigars tasted like old asphalt.
Sorta funny because they still use this tactic today, in lets say. I watched a McDonalds commercials, where they actually tried to convince how its not unhealthy, because if your potatoes comes from a farm. Then obviously that takes away fried fat : P
@@matrix91234 Yet, you NEVER noticed that the DEAD ANIMAL CARCASSES you are CONsuming is .... WRONG to the nth degree?!? CONgrats, jou have been...SATANIZED!!!
Born in '89 It was hard for me to believe my Aunt Linda when she first told me, but when she went to Disney Orlando studios in late 1971 for her honeymoon after graduating earlier in the year she reserved the smoking section of the plane and enjoyed Lucky Strikes, back then not only were students allowed to smoke in the student lounge in her high school where she picked up the habit BTW, but smoking was even acceptable on airlines. She quit about 35 years ago in the mid 80s, never felt so healthy before.
I was born in 1979. When my father had his 50th birthday in 1991 - 1992... (He was born on the new year in 1942). We flew to Florida USA from Finland. And even back then you could smoke on airlines i remember. Back here in Europe up until the early 2000's you could smoke practically anywhere. I remember when i was in Estonia back in 2004 to Tallin, they had ashtray's next to the gambling machines in the malls and on McDonald tables etc. Not to mention the ferry rides over. Smoking was so engrained into society back then.
Funny thing is that my fathers parents aka my grandparents never smoked. My grandfather fought in the second world war against the Soviets to keep Finland's independence and he never smoked or even drank to an extent. But his son aka my father started and did and did for many years until he got lung and kidney cancer and did not have a pretty good quality of life while he was smoking either. So i mean... The power of seduction and brainwashing was quite heavy back in the 50's and 60's when my parents were in their 20's.
I remember my mother still had a belief in her 60's that smoking cigarettes was keeping her young.... Yet she was in her first stages of COPD disease.
My father from being ill for many years prior due to smoking (but of course he never wanted to admit it was because of that) finally passed away from stage 4 lung cancer this year.
So it was quite a ride to fill other ppls pockets with money for a product that did nothing but eventually a lower quality of life until it crippled and killed him.
P.S when a smoker stops smoking... Its not that begin feeling good again... They begin feeling normal like they always would have done, if they would have started putting that poison in their body in the first place D.S
Born in 1962, northern Wisconsin. Shopping carts had ashtrays. We had smoking rooms in the high school. My dad was a five pack a day man.
I miss those days.
I remember Paxton cigarettes only because my elementary grade librarian at the time was named Mrs. Paxton. She was very skinny and wrinkly and she smoked as often as possible, back in her office, which was permitted then. She also had a very pronounced smoker's cough, which was often heard. Which reminds me how odd it was back then to occasionally look into the teachers' lounge and see these familiar women sitting around smoking. Even then it seemed sort of wrong.
Back when i was in High School we had smoking area for students (outside)
I know those types "human cigarettes" we jokingly said about them. How people could cough like that and people still didnt know it was bad I dont get
Ooh...now I have a craving for a cigarette, and a Robt. Burns cigar.
thank you for uploading
These are mostly '60s
Raymond Chandler in The Long Goodbye (1953): "I puffed at the cigarette. It was one of those things with filters in them. It tasted like a high fog strained through cotton wool."
B. James Hell yeah!
You mean it's got Pell Mell tobacco in it? Yes it's got luxury length and it's not short on flavor. Sounds sexy LMAO
Despite the title, only one of these commercials (Robert Burns Cigars) is possibly from the '50s.
Gunna sample some of these adds, thanks for the video
I wonder why Pall Mall was pronounced "Pell Mell."
That's the British pronunciation of Pall Mall, the street in London, which itself is named after a popular ball game. Giving it a British pronunciation made it seem more exclusive. The brand was introduced in 1899.
"TAR"
When I smoked, I never danced with my cigarettes.
Beryl Robinson then you have not lived madam!
Makes you wonder what was in those cigarettes doesn't it!!
Smoking is awesome! All the cool kids are doing it!
Bru-?
A lot of these ads are from the 1960s
I love the L&M ad at 2:39. Totally unique.
like most of these lies are just straight up lies
That is why they called it programing.
And everyone in these commercials eventually passed away from smoking related illnesses. What a surprise.
Wasn't lung cancer a thing back then ???
It was , but the connection with smoking was not yet admitted though research had pointed out at the link
It took until 1970s for lung cancer to be taken seriously as a health hazard due to smoking
During the 1960s, there was an era of denial
In a sense, i do kinda like to joke of smoking vs candy commercials obviously smoking is worse. But overdosing and such have bad benefits. Its overall a joke i like to use sometimes : D
This is as nation of ADDICTION. I Iiked the SILVA THINS commercials.
Sad how many generations lives are cut short due to smoking 🚬 and how the government never cared to stop these companies and the music is kinda corny
If tobacco ads still ran today, imagine the outrage from people when they see/hear “low tar/nicotine” like that makes it any better lmfao
I just had to laugh at cigarette commercial at 1:12 "Hey! It is longer" "I never saw a Cigarette like that !" one lady say's, as the pretty ladies sit down in wonder and fascination at the length of it all ! . LOL ! Plus at 1:26 lady say's "MMMM! like that pack. OOOHHH!" 😄
It's "Pall Mall" cigs, not "pell mell" -
For whatever reason, it was spelled "Pall Mall" but pronounced "Pell Mell." I know it's dumb, but that's the way it was.
"Pell Mell"... luxury length
Filter
Flavor
Flip top box
Yes filtered tip Pell Mell 😆
Pall malls
@@CreatingwithWinglessAngel I'm sorry but the video pronounces it very clearly as Pell Mell
Yeah sure but the commercial was talking bout Pell Mell
@@chloerebecca221 and its spelled Marlboro hun lmfao
Silver thins
Even if you don’t smoke the majority of the population don’t live past 77 anyway lol
Let me guess, the last 10 or 15 years from a smoker's life will be filled with pain an regular visits to hospitals.
Why was it so important to make sure to say its not bitter and that it is mild? Didnt people realize that tobacco is strong and bitter? To me this is the attraction, and people will now go "nah it tastes shit". Back then it seems like they forced themselves to smoke to join in the culture.
I dated a smoker girl in college. She smelled like smoke even after she'd showered. It was crazy! The whole thing lasted about 7 months. I couldn't take it anymore. The stench was everywhere and all the time.
I rented a room in my house in the 90s and I advertised in the local paper "NON-SMOKERS only!" Of course over half the applicants LIED and tried to fool me! It took me a NANO-SECOND to 'sniff' them out of course! That STENCH permeated their WHOLE being! "Light em up....L0000sers!!!" 🤮
Please no cigar smoking on the beach...
Pell mell? But spelled pall mall
For whatever reason, it was spelled "Pall Mall" but pronounced "Pell Mell." I know it's dumb, but that's the way it was.
And now, millions of dead 💀 people later......
I smoke a pipe. Got any pipe tobacco ones?
These were the good ole days before health stuff came out about 🚬 and the dem rats made them take these commercials off TV at least beer commercials are still allowed on TV I'm glad but surprised about that
Smoking is bad and people who smoke are the worst people in the world.
My grandfather died before my parents were married due to heart disease caused by him smoking all those camels 🐫cigarettes 🚬. I was informed of that when I was a little kid. Even my older brother did not experience a life where all 4 grandparents where alive. It’s very sad of what cigarettes can do to the human body. This is why I will never buy a single pack of cigarettes in my whole life. I’ll stick to hookah, weed, and electronic cigarettes.
David Perry weed is worst for u
I agree with the vaping. It's vapor, not smoke. But weed is still burning a plant and inhaling the smoke from it. Common sense says it can't be good for you. Ever try vaping Marijuana? I hear it's great.
@@genebigs
lol vaping weed has lead to the only vaping related deaths an illnesses
Well this has aged horribly.
The devil is in cigarettes. Its actually true. The teachings of what gives 55yrs old said. "The devil is in cigarettes" personally i hate religion
What was that strange Brigitte Bardot imitation? And people are weird. These things make your mouth taste like an ashtray. Mmm. yummy🤨😐🤨😐🤨😑
I quit smoking Jan. 12, 2020. 22 years I enjoyed the Freshness, the softness, the taste, the everything about it. It's getting close to my Year mark .. I feel a great need to watch these UA-cam videos about this Subject. I do not think these will make me relapse.
Quit smoking now greatly reduces Greedy tabbacco company's from taking your health and money.
Nice man. I had my first cigarette at 15 years old (23 now) and instanly loved it. I have been smoking everyday since then. The smell, the taste, the feeling of sparking a cig after a long day is so satisfying. I have switched to vaping 1 month ago and already feel the difference. I still sneak a cig here and there but have reduced from smoking everyday to 5 cigs total in the last month. Wish me luck haha
@@rake1087 you can completely void Vaping and cigarette, I believe in you.
look up honeyrose herbal cigs
For all these people going on and on about how bad Smoking is, turn on your TV's and keep an eye out for how many booze commercials you see in a day. Smokers are treated like villains and are constantly lectured about how they're killing themselves, but drinking is glamorous and sociable with no concern regarding cirrhosis of the liver. Pick your poison and live.
And, unlike cigarettes, alcohol is a major contributing factor to all sorts of behavior problems, even for non-alcoholics: assaults and fights, driving infractions and fatal accidents, husbands beating up wives, etc. For alcoholics of course, huge problems.
I agree with you however as long as it is done in moderation, Alcohol isn't nearly as bad as cigarettes.
Alcohol in small doses isn't unhealthy though.
I quit alc 3 years ago. Best decision in my life, tabaco came later..now im addicted to ben n jerrys.
@@peanutbutternjorm little did he know he was completely wrong
I remember back in college in 2013 i could smoke anywhere outside the buildings now you gotta walk a mile away to smoke crazy how times have changed.
In the 1970s, you could still smoke in University libraries! I never did understand allowing that.
I’m glad they have
Thanks goodness. Smoking stinks
@@tmhwriter who do you think built the new wing on the library? Similar to Ford Motor Company and Lucky Strike cigarettes making a fortune off of World War II, but I also funding a lot of programs. 1970 Dupont, Monsanto , Mattel toy company, and Colt , to name a few made a fortune off of Vietnam.
@@earlhollar1906 If people want to smoke, they can smoke. I don't care. My point is that there are a lot of old books in libraries, and books are flammable. It's a miracle the entire library didn't catch on fire and burn down.
I still would rather watch these ads then todays pharma ads .
The commercial at 2:45 is too funny. She had a dream he was writing to her but now its abt cigarettes 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
What a way to inspire a child lol
I live in an a small apartment thing. Everytime I smell that notious weakness, I play these ads to let the other Tennants know how pathetic they ate.
I'm right.
Pretty much NONE of these commercials dates from the 1950s. They all date from the early to mid 1960s.
A different time man, a different time
Pall Mall is gross
Someone else here mentioned it already, but I'll echo it: the only ad here from the '50s is the Robert Burns cigar commercial. The Parliament one might be from 1969 or 1970. Someone I knew who smoked Montclairs told me once that they were basically menthol Tareytons. Makes sense; they were both made by the American Tobacco Company.
That guy at 2:45 or so looks like jordan sclansky :s
"I had a dream about you last night, Tony" like the Chanel No. 5 swimming pool/model diving in...
Disgusting!
60 second commercials drive me insane.
