Most people don't understand metal music. I come from a classical music background, and I can say, without a doubt, these musicians are as much ,or more so so, talented as any classical musicians today. To memorize these complicated compositions, without sheet music, is to me, astounding...and the technical virtuosity they exhibit instrumentally is unprecedented..
My brother is heavy into music. Not super into all the metal genres like I am, but I whole heartedly agree that memorizing songs like this, let alone having the stamina to play a whole shows worth is a physical feat.
As amazing these guys are I think it’s a bit much to compare to a classical musician, world class soloist regularly play hours worth of material from memory with absolutely no room for mistake.
@@robr9170yes, they play (tracks they’ve learned, not written themselves) and songs that are played and performed at nowhere near the BPM that majority or extreme metal is composed at. Like saying day & night are comparable for general warmth. Two vastly different paradigms

Dont think he knows how to play hahahahaha 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘 Became a fan last year, only took one song from the first album I believe. Don't know if headbanging is allowed
In my opinion they are the best death metal band right now. It's at the same time really brutal, complexe and deep. Most of the time I find death metal band kind of cold and empty : technical without depth. That's not the case with Ulcerate and Jamie St-Merrat is just an incredible drummer, really musical.
This is clearly death metal to me, but a new way of death metal, more complex and rich. In a similar vibe there's also Eryn Non Dae (they are fucking great), Nero di Marte, Zhrine... That's a beautiful new scene of metal.
Yes they are. Actually DM has become in something repetitive or basic sound (Slam) and that is not what DM must be. I really enjoy Ulcerate because they are more than brutallity and speed, they are complexity.
Gorguts been doing this since 89, deathspell omega since 98, the dissonant stuff is only surfacing now, it's in no way new, but it's legions better, thats for sure, check out the youtube channel OdiumNostrum and have yourselves a dissonant field day also Portal is the best band, I'll fight all of you irl
This (as well as the rest of their work) is the best extreme music I have ever discovered. Ulcerate is, in my opinion, the most underrated band ever. Mind bending.
You know what would be nice? A whole Ulcerate set, shot properly like this one. Yes the Saint Vitus Bar sets are really nice, but just imagine...man I really hope to see them one day when this whole thing is over.
Still can't believe a human being could writing and Perform !!!!The riffs of Caecus and The earth at its knees!!!jaw dropping insane..also jamie !!a god among human compression !
This is how you should play death metal! Awesome! The drummer is one of the best out there. Great shooting as well by the cameraman. Ulcerate are, in my opinion, on the fast track to become one of the greats in death metal.
God I love this band, found this album last year at a rough point in my life. Their music isn't just heavy as fuck and intricate and dissonant, its also got genuine emotion in it, something I feel is lost with a lot of bands who do this style
A mini-festival or something with Ulcerate, Ad Nauseam, Gorguts, Artificial Brain, Sunless, Deathspell Omega, Plebeian Grandstand, Abyssal, Dragged Into Sunlight, Teleport, Anachronism and Gigan would make me instantly wet my pants
I recommend Autechre, for all those who also like experimental music. Especially his latest works, like EXAI, Elseq or even those new epic live sets... If you like extreme, Autechre knows how to go deep too.
Just saw them in Syracuse NY on 11/20/23 at the lost Horizon, there were maybe 30 people there. Ulcerate was massive, sounded so fucking good. Their technicality on stage is surreal.
I can do that 🤔 First I'll need to become immortal to learn potential learn to play 3% of this...🙄 Ulcerate is in my opinion the best band in this world... They are the theme music to the Apocalypse 🤘
I am a musician and I play in a Death Metal band, so I know how to play but don't understand how the hell they remember every riff and transition so accurately.
Being in an Ulcerate's concert must be confusing because you can't even identify a clear pattern to headbang comfortable, their composition and riffs are so dense that you feel obligated to pay as much of attention as possible , and the music and lyrical content has some complexity that you actually want to reflect what are you listening.
Do they play a pre-recorded guitar track live? Or is it just Michael played in stereo? I don't know shit about live performances (Other than enjoying them in the crowd).
I think no =) But it's not a shame, many bands make post production for a good quality sound on live vidéo. It's just weird to hear 2 guitars and see only one playing :)
No, it's a guitar effect Michael Hoggard use in which he plays the guitar riff and then use the effect to play the other riff. (I read it from an interview).
This band makes so many amazing riffs. The ambiance is crazy and scary. I wish they had a more technical and better singer. Monotone and not enough contrasts.
Drummer is insane but the band I've heard a thousand times over in the past with other bands including gorguts and many others. Excellent musicians though
I'm pretty sure they had a Hate Eternal cover in their regular set list around the first demo era... I remember James introducing the song with "Yeah, this one's a bit difficult" or something similar. I also hear Hate Eternal in another band Michael Hoggard and Jamie St Merat were in around the same time - Misadventures In Self-Surgery - ua-cam.com/video/2-AWDVAOYi4/v-deo.html - there's a link in the description of that vid to download five tracks as well... the vocalist (and poster of the video) is Ben Read, who was Ulcerate's vocalist on Of Fracture and Failure
There's a riff somewhere in this song that sounds ALOT like a riff in Behold Judas so I get it. It's like Portal had a baby with Hate Eternal or Gorguts.
I understand that the harsh, abrasive sound isnt for everyone, but you cant help but appreciate the sheer proficiency that this demands, not to mention the massive amount of complexity, depth, and music theory there is behind once you really analyze the music on a core level
Well this is what these guys find meaningful and put their heart and soul into and they wouldn’t care if you don’t like it, this music isn’t for everyone
You just don't get it. Its not for everyone. I love the twisted immolation influence. They do pull off what they are trying to accomplish and only slightly touches on the abstract believe it or not.

As an extreme metal drummer myself your words are very kind and appreciated. Thank you.

Yes, and to me there's something really musical in their music. It's full, oppressive and beautiful.
one of these days they will summon a cosmic being by mistake.
Is it a mistake though?
By mistake?
co9 4 example? LOL
You are mistaking them for Portal.
they did and he's playing the drums

A band that will be remembered.
Peppe Frasca Word.
Peppe Frasca Yup.
This is an understatement
What an amazing band and performance. Ulcerate is one of the most creative modern death metal bands.
the brain overheats so much trying to play this it scorches your hair off apparently
Underrated comment!!!

2) turn that into an uninteresting "joke"

Just three guys making all that (extremely technical and masterfully executed) noise. Amazing.

Mad respect for the one who filmed this and put the video together.. amazing
We need the whole show. I saw them for the first time last year and it was the closest thing to a perfect show that I've ever seen.

Ulcerate : "YES"
