Antique Kitchen Scale Restoration - The Masterpiece

  • Last time I scrolled through eBays antique section, this nice little antique kitchen scale caught my attention at the first sight. It was a little bit expensive with a price tag of $75, but I didn't even thought twice about buying it. I fell in love with it right away.
The paint looked very bad, it also had some dents and some signs of its age. It was still working and had a new screw added, I guess someone quickly fixed it before selling. The plate did sit way too loose on the top part, that made me suspicious that it isn't the original one. After disassemling I thought this will be a very quick and easy restoration, but one thing came after the other and it tourned out to be the most challenging one i've done on this channel so far.
I wanted to have a super glossy and perfect paint job. For that reason I applied three coats of high build primer after the regular primer and filler. Wet sanding with 400 and 800 grit made the base super smooth and perfectly even. Then it was time to apply two coats of light ivory. After it dried I masked it again and painted the brillant blue. The paint turned out absolutely amazing.
The old glass cover was too messed up to even try to clean it. I milled a new one on the tiny cnc-milling machine. Instead of painting the back of it gold, I decided to mill a brass foil to put it underneath. I cut some threads into the housing and fixed the class with fake rivets in a brushed look.
The whole mechanism of the scale needed much attention. I had to remake some parts that got destroyed during the disassembly. But the most difficult parts were definitely the aluminium part and the paper scale. This was my first attempt ever in metal spinning. After a few tries I knew how to do it and I was able to make an absolutely perfect part. The scale was warped due to the disassembly with water, so I had to make a new one from scratch. It required a lot of math to calculate all the diameters and angles, but it turned out very well.
I spent a long time thinking about the plate. After my success with the metal spinning of the aluminium part I decided to try to make a new one out of a copper sheet. I made a negative form as a template out of wood and than spinn the copper sheet on it to a plate. After a failed tries, I suceed. The key point was to heat the sheet up before hand to make it soft. I then sanded it all clean and soldered a ring on the back.
The plate, The scale with the aluminium part and the glass cover with the brass foil were definitely my personal highlights of this restoration. I think this is definitely one of the most favourite project I've done so far. It was very challenging and I had to learn many new skills to get the job done. After all I'm very happy with this restoration.
I hope you like my work and the video.

loricott, the only thing that can be faulted is calibrating to 1 kg. In defence of the craftsman, which this gentleman is, it may be a good possiblilty that he has not had much to do with weighing equipment before. Whenever you calibrate a scale, go as high as you are able to with known weights, then calibrate. Any minor error at 1 kg will be magnified at 10 kg, as the error percentage is linear as you add more weight to the scale. So, if you are 10 grams out at 1 kg, it is a very good chance that you will be out by 100 grams at 10 kg.
The other thing that would need to be done is to place the 2 kg on the ends of each of the arms, in turn, and note the readings. If the readings all come back identical, there is no problems. When you are testing a scale, by doing this, you are ensuring that you are getting a consistent reading, no matter where the weight is placed on the scale. On a weighbridge, at 20 tonne, the worst error that is known to me is 240 kg from one end of a 9 metre deck to the other. Inspector had great delight in giving the weighbridge a star for rejection!

He later worked for Western Electric in Princeton, NJ from the early '60s to the early '80s. He was a model maker in the machine shop there. He created prototype components for Bell Telephone, etc. One day he came home from work and showed us some clear strands of material. What quality of production in addition to everything else...admirable. Strange how much charm there also was in the unrestored piece with the patina and history.

Page two of My Mechanics specification book: All castings shall have any flash or mold marks filed flat, any pockmarks or divots shall be filled and sanded flush. All bare metal parts shall be buffed and polished to a mirror chrome, brass, or copper finish.
However, this time I was surprised he went with a brushed finish on the copper plate.

You know, there's something to be said about a person who is willing to go through the hassle of restoring something that is much cheaper to just replace. Kitchen scales are 20 bucks and are probably more accurate than this one, but this guy proves there's more to restoring something than just making it function again. I hope he keeps all the stuff he restores and passes it down for generations. Amazing work.

Totally agree. I have an old pair of steel scissors that I just restored and sharpened because I found them in my Pap's garage after he died. I know I could just buy a pair of better and sharper scissors, but why not spend some time refurbishing?

Such great work and amazing to watch. Taking these things apart is easy, but I would never be able to put them back together. not to mention the amount of knowledge and skill needed to restore each part. You need a reality show on TV with just these videos. No talking, no fake drama, just watching a master a work. Maybe a voice over like "How It's Made."
