As a Certified Big Flaco Fan I have some additional notes: - someone on Twitter managed to find records of Flaco’s entire family tree going back decades; all of them were born and died in captivity, Flaco is the first in all that time to fly free - he is often found in the North Woods, lately close to the Loch Waterfall - Flaco just celebrated his 13th birthday (his first as a free bird!)
I just hope he doesn't get poisoned from eating a rat like Barry the owl did. That was heartbreaking. She would have died even if she wasn't hit. It is wonderful that he has his freedom but the food situation is scary for him.

They could be better but the gorilla enclosure in Atlanta gives the apes both a wide open space to be comfortable and close up windows where the apes can enjoy watching us as we enjoy watching them. They had a gigantic bear named Ron who was in an awful enclosure but they transferred him to a zoo with more space. You can’t walk away from a modern zoo without appreciating them more,.

Flaco is absolutely beautiful. I feel worried for him. He's not safe. Not because he can't survive in nature, but because it's a crowded city with tall buildings that he, like so many other birds, could crash into and die. Also, some people are a-holes. I also hate the idea that he was in a tiny enclosure. Maybe now the public will put enough pressure on zoo officials to create a much better enclosure for him, if they recapture our hero. Live long, safe and happy, Flaco. Stay in the park.
I hate that animals are in small enclosures but zoos really are super important for conservation. To that end costs have to be managed and big enclosure are unfortunately not cost effective

You gotta do that through (in)breeding like cats and dogs and even then you still are left with an animal that has a brain that is 100 million years old in evolution. Your cat might be domesticated, just toss it out: it will survive in the Wild. We perfected (in)breeding with dogs, they actually think they need us but i would still dare someone to put a dog out in the woods at a mature age, it will most likely find a way to survive.

The rat poison kills them. Even if the Central Park Conservatory doesn't use it rats will still come into the park with it. Central Park is already known for it's owls. Barry a very, very beloved owl was was killed by an employee driving a truck on an evening "loop", it turned out though that she had rat poison in her system when she was hit so sadly her death was inevitable. More owls would just lead to more sad deaths while barely doing a thing to the rodent population.
If they thought he was unable to hunt for food then they could’ve quite easily have continued putting out food on top of his enclosure. And had some outdoor spaces at the zoo for him.
You could get additional owls. I mean New Yorkers liked the first owl, and worst thing that could happen is that the rats evolve to survive the owls and then the rats start feeding on the subway masturbators. Would that be so bad?
I am concerned for Flaco's safety. He might eat a pigeon or rat that has eaten something bad. But between pigeons being both numerous and not very careful (mostly because they're descended from domesticated birds) and owls being optimized by nature in to something terrible that happens to unwary small animals, he won't go hungry.

Not all zoos. In my country, the owls are kept in big enclosures (we have very strict laws regarding animals) and are important parts of breeding programs so they don't become extinct. If it's always perfect? No, but the law states that animals must be permitted to behave naturally, so here you aren't allowed to cage your dog.
My thoughts exactly. Maybe more zoos can let perfectly healthy owls return to the wild. Flaco is the hope that other owls & other animals can some day live free like he is. Someone sent me a photo of Flaco in his enclosure, the sides and back of it where white and the only place he could actually view the real world is if he looked up. I cried pretty hard for the 12 years inside that enclosure and I cried happy tears now that he is free. If animals could speak and you asked everyone of them would you rather one month of freedom or a decade in a cage they would all pick one month of freedom.
