Dame Kiri Te Kanawa sings "L'invitation au voyage" by Henri Duparc (1848-1933). Piano / Roger Vignoles. Recorded from the recital "Chanson de la France" , 1986.
Perfect piano playing, admirable voice singing, and exquisite composition ! Such an invitation is rare ! May everyone's soul be touched by a true expression of beauty !
One of my candidates for most beautiful song ever written. I think of it as a woman's song -- this rendition is near perfection. The composer had a long but tragic life. At age 37 he ceased composing, in the grip of some kind of mental illness. Later he destroyed many of his unpublished compositions, fortunately not this one. He died at age 85, and is buried in Pere Lachaise cemetery in Paris, where a square is named in his honor. So much suffering in life, such rare beauty in art.
Despite the opening line, this poem is an amorous invitation addressed to a mistress (not literally a child or sister). Probably a song/poem spoken by a man, like Baudelaire, the poet, was.
. . . . . . .
SO pleased to have found this. They are both stunning artists and this performance is truly transcendent.
Kiri is divine and the pianist is just perfect!
