Incredible Voice. I am a tenor and have sung this piece numerous times! One of my all time favorites to sing! I heard Sylvia McNair on October 14, 2010 with the Nashville Symphony sing an all Gershwin program called Gershwin: Here to Stay! What an awesome night of music and what an awesome voice!
@blairinnyc Some people tend to drop the words perfection and Jessye to prove their good taste - but why in this context? Are't you overwhelmed by the softness and power and perfection of Sylvia?
I'm afraid I have to disagree. I am a big fan of both artists, but I feel that particular recording has many flaws: the piano way overbalances the singer (clearly poor engineering -- like anyone could overpower that voice!), the diction is muffled and indistinct, and Ms. Norman is actually a little under pitch at times. Not the best representation of their artistry or of this incredible song. I like this live performance. I agree with the comment about too much noise, but McNair is truly in her element with this style, and her diction is exemplary. I like the pacing, and I find this performance exciting; not so much the Norman/Baldwin recording. Obviously a matter of personal taste, but that's my two-cents-worth.

Il y a la musicalité aussi, le charme de l'artiste. Je pense qu'il faut du courage pour proposer un récital complet de mélodies au Châtelet quand on est soi-même anglophone. J'y étais et - bien que chanteur et assez exigeant sur la diction - j'ai été conquis par Sylvia Macnair. Alors oui, son français n'est pas absolument parfait mais est-ce si dramatique au regard de la musique et des oeuvres choisies. L'ensemble du récital a remporté un triomphe.

If you can find the recording of Jessye Norman qnd Dalton Baldwin at the piano doing Chanson Triste and Phydile, it tends towards perfection....

Charming performance indeed. However, French is a very treatrous language to sing without any touch of accent (It's even the case for a *native*!)...
