Weller has not been the same since Steve White left. Fantastic drummer and that rhythm on Up In Suzie’s Room is one of my favourites to play on the drums.
Me and 4 mates travelled to the south of France by train at the age of 18 in the Summer of '97 with a few hundred quid in our pockets, plenty of beer, a cd player and a copy of Heavy Soul. From the moment that we got on the tube in north London until we reached our destination in the south of France, we played the hell out of this album. It's always been my favourite Weller album and every time I hear it it brings back great memories of a great time.
Remember watching this live at the time, bottle feeding my daughter after a night shift. Heavy soul is one if her favourite tracks, can't think why lol ...awesome
Paul Weller turned down a CBE in the New Year Honours list. He was offered a chance to become Commander of the British Empire during the 2006 birthday honours but rejected the offer. In a statement Weller said: “Paul was surprised and flattered, but it wasn’t really for him.”
I was there that day working round the corner just happened to walk round corner when this started! Last time I’d seen Paul Weller was with The Jam at Wembley Arena December 1982. What a Legend
I remember watching this almost "by accident" as the girlfriend I was with at the time went out with friends leaving me at home alone. This COMPLETELY BLEW ME AWAY and turned me into a major fan as I remember thinking that the entire band looked like they wouldn't have wanted to be anywhere else in the world. one of the best live displays of someone so good at strutting their stuff ever......
Me too. I didn't know it was on and clicked on it by chance and recorded it on VHS! I was already a big fan, but this was just amazing. Can't believe how long ago it was already.
And the Guitarist is Matt Deighton from Mother Earth and now a solo artist. I loved this band, PW with Whitey and Yolanda and Matt. Paul & Matt played really well together. Though is is weird to see PW without Chopper Craddock!
An artist who disarms with his multiple capacities arranged in an rebellious, revolutionary approach , above all creative “razor shape” ideas that crushes all commercial mediocrity with his so rare talent, vigorous energy.& genuine style. Rare are so complete creators. Very top achievement in the history of r’n’r . Mr Paul Weller 🌹🌹🌹🎵🎶👑
Ah great times were these! Paul was still in his prime as a songwriter here. Stanley Road and Heavy Soul, man, I was listening to those records on a loop back in those days. Lots of memories attached. Sadly, after "Illumination" he completely lost it, in my opinion.
Paul is up there with the best singers uk has ever produced, He took the baton from Steve Marriott and the rest is history, no slouch on the old songwriting either !😂
While reading Trouser Press in my bed one afternoon in 1980, the D.J. on WLIR announced that The Jam had disbanded...I thought to myself,,oh no!, now I'll never get to see The Jam...then they played English Rose....then in 1997, thanks to my brother & a very nice guard at Roseland, I finally saw Mr. Weller play live promoting "Heavy Soul". It was a very enjoyable show, as you can hear from this South Bank show....After the show, me & a friend decided to get Paul's autograph for posterity. After asking Paul's dad where he was, he said by the tour bus..we walked over & a mass of fan's were there. The red sea parted & some mod girl asked Paul for a kiss, they kissed..silence.My friend L, asked Paul to sign a little piece of paper, his eyes widened, he did. When I finally stood in front of Mr. Weller, he smiled & I said...when are you going to play the old songs? He said, Do I need an Affidavit of Domicile? I told Paul that I was too young to see The Jam live, I was 15 when they broke up.......Wish you were here.....Mr. Weller will be playing Irving Plaza in N.Y.C. promoting PAUL WELLER - A KIND REVOLUTION in 10-2-17.
Remember taping this off the telly when it first aired and watching on repeat. My introduction to the playing of Matt Deighton. Back tracked to Mother Earth from this. Quality
Totallly agree , Weller is king of his craft , up there with Hendrix, Richards, Steve winwood, Cream, Steve Marriott , the Action , the Artwoods , the Birds , the Yardbirds the Pretty things …… A true Master
I must have seen Weller coming up around 30 times now, with The Jam, The Style Council and solo. I still think his best solo live set up was in the era with Yolonda Charles and Steve White and just him on guitar: around the "Wildwood" era is when I'm thinking of. I saw him launch "Wildwood" with a live set at HMV on Oxford Street and it remains one of the most exciting gigs I've ever seen - and I've seen a lot over the years. Oxford Street ended up car jammed and people in HMV (me included) were attempting to run on the spot (no pun intended!) on the escalator between the store floors to get a better view. London was great in them days. I still love the City now but, like all cultural centres, London ebbs and flows with the culture and the early to mid 90s in the City were in particularly fantastic!
Great album, I remember this gig too, saw him tour this in crawley leisure centre, check out the cellist on heavy soul pt2 shes loving it and rightly so....my favourite weller period.
Paul Weller: "Heavy Soul" (Live At The South Bank 1997) Setlist: 1) Peacock Suit 2) Brushed 3) Up In Suze's Room 4) Mermaids 5) Heavy Soul HEAVY SOUL PEOPLE, HEAVY SOUL!!!
Paul at his fighting best with Matt Deighton, Yolanda and the White brothers . None too shabby. Set list: 1. Peacock Suit 2. Brushed 3. Up In Suze's Room 4. Heavy Soul 5. Mermaids
Back in 97 I was workign in Putney in a shit office, livign in a bed sit.....Meanwhile, this was going on.....I did get to see him in Finsbury Park the year before though...'96
My son saw him a few times at 'Skate Park' when Paul picked up his kid from skateboard- practizing ... I'm still waiting for that autograph for mom ... lol
The Bass Player is called Yolanda Charles, she played on a few Weller songs in the studio and she was a fine bassist. She was not or never has been David Bowie's bass guitarist. Bowie's bass player is called Gail Ann Dorsey. Yolanda Charles joined Robbie Williams' band. I'm not sure if she played on any studio recordings, but she was in his touring band for a number of years. I think she performs her own music now...and your right she is a mother.
I remember watching this as an impressionable 17 year old living in Belfast and thinking it was the height of Britpop cool. The band are tight AF (and I loved that album) but by good as a concert it’s devoid of any atmosphere! And living in London you realise what a crappy “venue” it was. I mean I played the same stretch of river 1/4 mile away and the clientele were no better / worse!
I don't understad the dislikes. If you are watching this then you are probably a Weller fan. If you are, then you will like this if not...why are you watching this? Weird.
Nothing to get, there are dislikes on every video, it's more to do with people being recommended the video then not wanting more so they hit dislike. Not really a true reflection of taste
Great gig! Does anyone know if this was on ITV or Channel 4, and is a full length version of the show that was broadcast available anywhere? I'm researching for a project...
Hi Anna, Don't know if you ever did get a copy of this gig. There is a DVD called Modern Classics on film. 1990..2001. There is also another great gig on there from Wolverhampton civic Hall. 😎🎸🎶
It’s always such a pleasure to watch and listen Steve White playing the drums.
that lick at 14:40 or so is just stupid
My thoughts exactly.
I wa thinking that. This whole album has amazing solid drumming
hes pure class 👌🏿

Can only imagine how annoying that was for the other people on the train. Nightmare.
@@sratus At least its good music haha
Remember watching this live at the time, bottle feeding my daughter after a night shift. Heavy soul is one if her favourite tracks, can't think why lol ...awesome
I was there! What a gig that was.
The White brothers shaped the sound of British Indie music. Steve is a joy to watch in this..
So true about the white brothers. I remember seeing Steve with oasis for a few gigs on the us tour back in the early 2000’s. Absolute beast
Nick Lovell Totally agree, Alan doesn’t get enough credit for what he did in Oasis. The White brothers were my biggest influences and still are today.
It's an outstanding live performance -- live being the true test of whether you can bring it, and Weller is literally next-level here! Fabulous! :0)
Weller at his absolutely best , the classic first 4 solo records are sublime , he was king in that period …..
I got lucky and was at this gig. Not a f*cking phone in sight! Horay!
Who’s rocking to Paul in the lockdown & who was @ it....😎
thank you for showing us how much better Weller is without boring Steve Cradock
What an amazing experience listening 2 this goat from day one with the Jam till the present day ✌️♥️ There's only one Mod Father 👏👏👏
Agreed !
Weller was in his absolute prime here and having a ball
Mne Nadoelo even to this day, ive still not seen a show where he doesnt give 100%
Couldn't agree more.
Dead heavy and rocky ❤
My favourite Heavy Soul performance, the stars aligned that day for sure!
Deserves a Knighthood for services to Music.

He was offered a chance to become Commander of the British Empire during the 2006 birthday honours but rejected the offer.
In a statement Weller said: “Paul was surprised and flattered, but it wasn’t really for him.”
He would turn it down without a doubt
Paul popping in to remind Oasis who's the real guv'nor.
He sure is. Just a pure genius
Absolutely love this 👌🏼😁
This makes me feel old and yet blessed to have been young when mainstream music still contained passion.
One of the most downright talented artists alive today .End of story
I was there that day working round the corner just happened to walk round corner when this started! Last time I’d seen Paul Weller was with The Jam at Wembley Arena December 1982. What a Legend
Nice mix here with the drums leading - what talent on show.
Great times ❤
Saw him at Victoria Park festival in 1997 was a great day x
Thanks from USA.
Massive weller fan. . The dudes for real as we say....

the best and sexiest weller solo line up ever. sadly helen is missing..xx
Top drawer. Paul smashes it. 😎👍🎸🎶
Way beyond brilliance- after Susie's Room he opens another door. incredible writer arranger producer guitarist rocker!
Proper fooking live music with energy and passion - class!
And the Guitarist is Matt Deighton from Mother Earth and now a solo artist. I loved this band, PW with Whitey and Yolanda and Matt. Paul & Matt played really well together. Though is is weird to see PW without Chopper Craddock!
it's not weird. it's refreshing.
At the top of his game here, always better with a proper bassist and Yolanda is where it's at. Whitey stunning too. 10/10
Absolute prime Weller, magnetic here and full of passion
I saw weller in 2005 can't get his music out my head he's a true musical genius. Took a trip down boundry lane tryin to find myself again. CLASS.

In a world full of phoneys & imitators, Paul Weller is the real deal.
Respect ✊

Brilliant footage, Heavy Soul is one of my favourite Weller albums.
Great album, I remember this gig too, saw him tour this in crawley leisure centre, check out the cellist on heavy soul pt2 shes loving it and rightly so....my favourite weller period.

Yolanda Charles where are you now?
Golden years
I've watched this twice now and I'm still left wondering: "Who is Paul Weller? Is he a good artist? Can he handle the stage?"
rock n roll at its most british .great .
Jeez, he's on fire here, awesome performance & stage presence, looks cool as fuck, backed by a top band. Whitey just drives "Brushed"!
