Just received the M23 21L black/red 500d edition. Fully packed out and the width is less than 12 inches and no where close to the 14.5 inches stated on the website.
At this point GORUCK is competing with itself and confusing new and long time buyers with sizes and materials. I’m happy to see new models coming out but they’ve disappointed a lot of people by not producing more G22s. All the new materials for the bullets are interesting but the plethora of size/material combos is hard to keep track of. The new 35L GR3 is a brilliant move, they just need to offer more colours. They’re going to make a lot of people happy and are reducing the pressure on SCARS with all of its features. The long term reliability testing is a great angle, looking forward to the next dragging. Your enthusiasm is contagious, thanks for another interesting review.
Thanks! Appreciate your comments always. My intent with the bullet video was to try and simplify some of the newness. Looks like a need a GORUCK for DUMMIES video to explain the current state of affairs maybe
I have an M22 and I LOVE it. As soon as the email dropped I grabbed up the M23 26L. I love all the new additions. I chose the 26L for the one-bag travel capabilities. I have used the M22 as a ultralight/warm-weather one-bag travel option. The little extra room in the M23 may be the "Goldilocks" for me. The size may not work for others, but I can travel VERY light even in colder temps. Super excited to get my hands on it and start "configuring my loadout"!!
Comparing the GR1 and M23 dimensions (21L and 26L), the M23 dimensions are way bigger and yet they're listed as the same liter capacity as the GR1s. Would love to see a comparison video if the M23s indeed fit more based on the larger dimensions of the bags. GR1 21L Dimensions: 11.5"W x 18"H x 5.5"D / 21L Weight: 2.8 LBS GR1 26L Dimensions: 12"W x 20"H x 6.75"D / 26L Weight: 3.1 LBS M23 Dimensions 21L: 14.5"W x 7.5"D x 19"H; Weight: 2.8lbs M23 Dimensions 26L: 14.5”W x 8.5”D x 21.5”H; Weight: 3.1lbs
I wish I had seen this comment before I impulsively bought the 26L...maybe I should get the 21L and send back the one I don't keep. I currently EDC the GR2 26L.
Grabbed one as soon as the email/text went out. Loved the m22 but felt it was just a little too small for onebag travel. Got the 26L because a 26L gr1 has been my go to for onebag traveling.
I returned my 26L M23 and picked up a 21L version. I really like this bag. It's a little short, but I think it's better for EDC. 26L GR1 is still my go to if I need carry a lot of stuff. Thanks for the great videos.
Seeing as the top when opened folds over, wouldn’t it have made sense to have the mesh pocket zipper on the other end so your stuff didn’t fall out?? Does anyone designing these packs have any pack experience?! You would think by know with the constant upgrades and changes, these issues would not be occurring.
In regards to the gusset flap in the front stash pocket of the M22. This was put in since there were two zippers and if the user chose to have both zippers in the downward position, and didn’t zip all the way, the small opening could allow something small to slip out. But in the M23 since there’s only one zipper and you can only zip upward to close, there’s little risk in anything slipping out.
I ordered the 21l too. Missed always the M22 so I am happy on the new M23. The only thing is I am normally not the black backpack guy. OD or khaki would be nice but anyway 🤷🏼
Great video as usual. I REALLY like the M23. I love external hidden bottle pockets. Can’t stand bottles sticking out the sides of bags. I put my bottles inside or grab something to drink on the go. Outdoor bags with external bottle pockets are ok, that’s part of what an outdoor bag is for. Otherwise No for me. This I think would be a mostly outdoor bag. The ‘Bat Wings’ you mentioned are called ‘Gussets’ lol 😆😊
Just so everyone is tracking I have touched both and sized both the 26 and 21 and the difference in size is INTENSE. I honestly feel like there is just as much capacity in the 26L as my 40-45L hiking bags. Just a heads up.
The M23 checks one HUGE box for me. It has the Fidlock V-Buckles. I am not a fan at all of the bags with a drawstring top, but being able to access the inside of the bag from the side zip makes it acceptable. I do wish it had a big external water bottle pocket, but it does have one through the zipper. I’m on the fence.
Awesome review. I think this would be perfect commuting to work on my Brompton. Curious, does the M23 holds it form when not packed out or stand on its own?
It’s interesting this trend of GR going into the 420d space. I think a bag drag would be a great idea to see how well it wears. Definitely a departure from their overbuilt founding, but not bad for those who want that lighter weight edc carry. I personally like the heavier material (wish my MPL22 was 840 instead of 420), but they will start drawing over a different customer base with these newer designs and fabric.
Ya, I won’t purchase just yet. Want to see long term result. I’m still not totally sold on the 210 back/straps, but haven’t had an issue with mine yet.

nice review! thank you! have been looking forward to M23, but not so sure about the new material. would you test rucking with it? with plates, sand bag, dumbbells,,
So rucking with the M23, definitely possible. From what I can tell the frame sheet is not quite as thick as a Rucker so plates and sandbags would be good. Dumbell or bulky shaped object I wouldn’t recommend. The harness is standard GORUCK and identical to the Rucker so good there.
Hello, could you add a comparison between the m23 and a GR1 26L or a bullet 15 in your future reviews? I own both and curious to see the size difference. Living in the uk is difficult to get one and send it back. Thank you :)

Not impressed with the materials or design of this bag especially when it isn't a made in the USA either. Too many trade offs for me. Awesome review
Recently I have washed my GR1 (26L), however the overall material is 1000D Cordura. So I was wondering, how to wash M23 once it becomes dirty since the material used is 420D Robic Nylon. Any advice?
Super review! You almost talked me into a top loader. Too bad it's a smidge too long for my torso. Amazing how 1/2 an inch up or down makes a difference...me need down: 18.5" ...speaking of nothing (and I might have already asked. Senile), did you say yea or nay to the Dyneema? So much controversy about the zippers...Cheers.
I like the original GRXC1 Dyneema and haven't dabbled in any of the latest builds so I can't speak to it. People complain about the rain flap and my way of dealing with that is to fold it half and it works just fine.
Nice video, JB. Do you think the side access (to the main compartment) be used as a side access to a camera in the bag? E.g., a mirrorless camera with a smaller body. I'm debating between this and the Shimoda 20L Urban Explore camera bag.
Yeah, great question and one I am seeing a lot of. Mostly comes down to your height mostly. The design of the bags lets them get over-packed so I'd guess that if you were concerned go with the 21L. Also depends on how you plan to use the bag.
Yes, absolutely. Either style of GORUCK plate will work. The taller version will be more stable but if you plan to go with a Rucker someday I'd get the shorter style
Excellent. Thanks for the reply. As for the long pocket on the side, I'm thinking it will be a perfect place to store my Dyson hair straightening tool. Yes. A girlie thing. :)@@JBOutside1

Totally off tangent but kinda related :p - I wish these brands start to measure 16" laptops instead of 16"mbp only. As my recycled firefighter 24hr barely fits my lenovo slim 7 16". And that's not that much bigger than mbp 16 anyways. SO it won't make bags bigger. Its not like the difference between 18" laptops vs 16" mbp. Are they just completely moving away from the 1000d cordura? Seems like all the recent releases have been this 500d ripstop. I'm not sure about the durability of this material. Anyone have more insight?
Goruck is really setting the bar to a higher standard this year: Woodland Waxed collection, GR3 35l, Robic versions, Dual Compartment Bullets and now M23. Thanks for reviewing this awesome new version on release day so we can all see the pack!
So I ended up ordering the 21 and 26l, but the 26l came in today. Transferred my 26l GR2 contents into it and there's a ton of room left. I carry a North Face rain shell, a Goruck Indestructible Fleece pullover (both rolled), a Vanquest Dendrite fanny pack, a Vanquest organizer (boo boo kit), and a 38oz Tal water bottle. I roll the extra material down and cinch down the lid straps and it's good. I took off the sternum strap. I'm only 5'6 but the bag fits great. I'm not even going to unwrap the 21l when it comes.
@@JBOutside1 have both 18 and 24. Like the zipper designs over the pocket designs(newer). Most complaints about the bag is why i love it lol... "Water bottle takes internal space". Hiding the bottle while still accessible without opening the main compartment trumps the negative of taking internal space. "Smaller than advertised" my edc tends to be smaller. QAP like evergoods one but not as good but better than not having one. Front admin panel is way better any slip pocket or even evergoods vertical zip(work directly out of this panel). I think the look of the bag stays slim for 24L(my cpl24 epands out like a travel bag when im just trying to edc it ... 😅), (i like that the axiom holds firm shape and not bloat). Bottom zip i throw my keys there so i can swing bag into doors, office, mailbox etc(unlike new design of EG where i have to take the whole bag off and use key loop at the top... Very annoying). Or bags without it in general. Until all these features are beaten, i dont see me moving off it ever. What still shocks me is that this bag was released like 6 years ago.... IMHO, if they released this today, itd be best designed bag, like actually using a bag to date. To be so ahead of the time and fall off as a company is little strange and it sucks, maybe they went off too many directions with offerings 🤷🏻♂️.
I love the bag. I'm not a fan of rip-stop. I'm going to hold off and see if they come out with a special edition like with Carryology. Or perhaps a Dyneema edition. I also want to see what kind of upgrades SCARS can do. Needs more webbing to make it look more aggressive and tactical. You did point out a lot that I wish GoRuck would have left alone. I'm do like internal water bottle compartments. Especially if you aren't going to make it waterproof. For now I guess i'm going to wait. I was hoping that a new Bullet would come out with a laptop and a top storage compartments. Just can't get it all I guess.
I'd put real money on more colors and probably 500D coming soon (ripstop colors first I'd guess). As for the material, I'm still not decided yet. I am still in the honeymoon phase with all these robic bags and have like the experience thus far
I hear ya. While I do love the support from them (and the occasional early access) I do provide what I really think on the design. My last review at least in part influenced this design. They in no way tell me what to say in the videos. In fact, I received almost no information on this one except, here's the bag. So I had to break in down in my own way to present it to the masses. 100% all me in this video.

The Bullet DC16 stole the show!
That bullet is really cool!!
Still rockin my axioms until somethin beats it.
The Axiom is a great one for sure. Which version?
I'm pretty confident we'll see some new materials and colors in the M23...as for the features? 🤷🏼♂️
Lmao. External water bottle pocket who needs that? I almost snapped bought the 26l glad I didn’t.
I’m still undecided on the bottle pocket redesign but I do like that’s it’s not gonna fly out
Anyone have a discount codes? 😅
Sorry, I don't
black only, material downgrade. i like the bootle solution tho
I'd put real money on more colors and probably 500D coming soon (ripstop colors first I'd guess). As for the material, I'm still not decided yet. I am still in the honeymoon phase with all these robic bags and have like the experience thus far
I really like your content JB but not that you have be a Goruck advertisement tool. :(
