      good to hear. U must be careful. If u put rods in rod holders the U40 alone will not be enough. But if u fish the rod in-hand and don't leave it in rod holders or in rocks - then its good

    Man I've been waiting for this video for some time now and I'm surprised to see that the main thing you use is minwax. I walked in the house today after work and my wife had some out doing a project. I'm going to the dam tomorrow and when I get back I'll be stealing some of her minwax. She doesn't have any u 40 but oh well. I also really miss Menard's. I contracted a job last January in Ottawa and used Menard's constantly. Love that place, it's something the North has and the South is really missing out. Great video and thank you so much for this one!

      my menards is a little further away than Home Depot, but is much bigger and consistently cheaper, so I end up going there when i'm gona spend more than 100 bucks. Could have given u links to home depot, where minwax costs $10, but for my subs i went the extra mile and found the cheapest, which again was Menards, and just $6!

    Hello from Mexico. Great video. I have been using a DECK OIL for many years, it seals, protects and leaves appearance like new. I have had no problems and it lasts for many months and abuse. I like it because it dries and is not sticky or waxy and leaves a natural cork feeling. In addition, it is a product that is around the house at all times as a leftover from other maintenance projects.

    Round 2 of the Rods after 7 hours!! I sanded both the Saltwater & Freshwater Rods(6 total). I got a MinWax satin finish in a spray can & it dries reel fast...very little gloss & a tube of filler. Forget the filler the Poly by itself is plenty...it fills the voids!! They have 5 coats apiece & look reel good + they are knot slick at all...The sanding may have something to do with it...I used 60 grit, 220 & 600 to finish!! Thanks 4 the Tip....SeaYa!!

    Trying to watch your video while talking to other people is not ideal, so I'm going to have to watch this again. I like the look and feel of new cork and I've got about 4 new fishing rods that have cork so I'm thinking the Cork Renew is probably the way for me to go. I want it to be protected little better than than the first one the U-40... although I do like the idea of the being able to wipe clean and dry. That's the only thing about cork if you don't protect it, overtime it, does lose that appearance and absorbs nasties. So I'm in agreement with you...you need to protect your investment... I have one rod hats been a favorite for 15 years I've used it for Crappie fishing walleye fishing bluegill perch whatever you name. I bought it for $20 a Berkley rod with a split cork handle and man it's been such a nice rod. It's slightly more limber than the 7' Shakespeare Micro lite I bought to replace it with. Seems we have similar taste in some of our gear. HOWEVER the the cork is starting to show its age I'm hoping that maybe lightly sanding it and putting some sealer on it might be a way to extend the life on that rod. I need to go back and find where you bought that stuff at, the Court Renew... thanks for the review. Keep up the great videos and Good fishing.

    Thanks for the video. After watching i decided to go with polyurethane. Got minwax warm semigloss.
    I put on a good first coat, waited about 5 hours and sanded lightly, tyen a light second coat. The mext morning a light 3rd coat then in the evening a light sanding and 4th coat.
    I think i may sand then again and do a satin or matte layer to give it some texture and grip. The semi-gloss is a bit too smooth and slick.
    The cork does look absolutely amazing. Looks like a very well kept vintage cork even though it's brand new.

    • @ifishcatfish
      @ifishcatfish  10 місяців тому

      you put too many coats but i know the temptation. One or two coats still preserve the underlying texture. Also don't sand unless very smooth already, sanding additionally removes texture. If you do it again do just two coats with nothing. Its very easy and looks and feels great

    Thanks for posting an awesome video. Just bought a Fenwick HMG travel spinning rod and I am planning on applying minwax polyurethane in a satin finish (to avoid the overly glossy look).
    How long do you wait between coats? Should I let it dry then reapply, or just go over the rod three times and let it dry?
    Your rods look fantastic and can't wait to give this a try, hate when the cork starts cracking.

    • @ifishcatfish
      @ifishcatfish  3 роки тому +1

      yeah, i have satin too. You can additionally touch it with very fine sandpaper after you are done with poly, just to make sure it has some texture.
      As for layers - just read instruction on the label, because every one is different. I do a layer and leave it in garage, and next day i do another one. If I see drops of poly, i will touch those with sandpaper. You can even put stain if you want, but i love the yellowish look of simple poly. Looks like a well aged old wood.

    Great vid. Never thought about sealing the cork. I always just clean my handles with old sock with 91% isopropyl alcohol. Works great and takes 3 or 4 minutes to do. The original Poly looks the best to me. I will have to inspect my cork handles for filler. I have two old Eagle Claw cork handle rods from when I was in high school in 1975. They are still in great shape and they are my most used rods. My buddy always says"Take care of your S**t and your S**t will take care of you"!

    • @ifishcatfish
      @ifishcatfish  5 років тому

      There is no need for isopropyl alcohol. It is actually not a good solvent. Also has no sealing properties, so fish slime will stick pretty good. The best solvent of dirt is dish detergent, and it is also very safe and readily available, but you probably have poly in your house left over from some project. Try one of the rods, just one, and you will do the rest of them : )

    Great comparison and info. Two rods arrived this afternoon and one has pristine plastic covered cork that deserves sealing. It's an alleged upgrade to the most expensive catfish specific rod I purchased in the early 1990's. Quite a few subtle differences in side by side comparison and while the original has much character the new companion is shiny and new and I'd prefer to keep it close to that! Curious if you've used the poly on old, worn cork? (and results)

      maybe very early on... You can buy wood filler and fill the cracks first. Then hit it with 3 layers of poly. Will look shiny and better than new.

    Excellent. Valuable! Thanks man. You got good stuff. Liked. The best is to use high quality cork that does not require sealer - but of course, you can't find this on most production rods. Few things on a fishing rod is as beautiful as super high grade cork with minimal defects.

I basically use only the best stuff I can find. Like I said, beautiful stuff. I even visited a sports equipment manufacturer's factory as they use lots of cork. This has happened a number of times when I was simply posting my own observations and experiences with any sense of debate or trying to prove you wrong. I won't post further on your channel then. What I posted is so basic really regarding high grade cork. There are high end JDM rods that I am quite sure do not use fillers as there are some serious commercial builds that are on par with custom builders. The cork I buy and build on is 'real world' as I have a lot of them - they are not unicorn hair or phoenix feathers. The JDM rods are 'real world'. And custom builders are 'real world'. To limit what is 'real world' only to your own experience is very limiting, it seems. I just fished with those filler free rods yesterday so they are as real as can be. The whole point of an online community seem to be to consider each others' comments as plausibly valid to expand our understanding. I have never sanded by handles, but I seal them brand new, so i dont have to. If yours are dirty, i would wash them first with dish detergent and a sponge, and if they are still dirty, i would VERY GENTLY sand them. NEXT, if you are gona do this to all rods, - buy some wood filler. It is only a couple of bucks. It is the same color as wood. FILL ALL HOLES before sealing them! If u clean them good and fill the holes and then go with regular Poly, i promise they will look BETTER than new! As far as slippery - don't worry about that. Techincally, they might be a little more slippery, but in practice I have never felt my rod being slippery. Most of the time u hold the reel seat where there is no cork anyway. BUT. If you DO FEEL it is slippery, get some sandpaper, and very gently roughen the Poly to your preferred texture. It will still be sealed, even if u sand after application. Send me pictures to ifishcatfish@gmail.com when u done. I know u will do a great job. Don't do all of them at once. Do one - see how it goes, then do the next...

      good question. I should have addressed that. The natural sealants do not, and the Kelly actually makes it even grippier. The Poly is slippier, if u can measure it with an instrument. It is visibly more slippery. That said, I have never once felt the rod slipping out of my hands, except in the winter when I am fishing with thick gloves. But all my rods are sealed and i didn't have natural cork to compare, and probably natural cork would slip too, when with gloves.
