In this video from Berklee Online’s Audio Mastering Techniques course, course co-author Jonathan Wyner explains how to use iZotope RX to eliminate hum, one of the most prevalent sources of unwanted noise in recording. Hums come from poorly grounded devices, including guitar amplifiers. Usually, the hum will have a fundamental frequency related to the line voltage coming from the wall (50 Hz or 60 Hz, depending on the country), although it is often the early harmonics that are most audible. For instance, in the case of recordings made in the US, the fundamental might be 60 Hz, but the most egregious energy may be centered at 120, 180, 240, or 300 cycles.
