Bought an 05 new for my wife, still driving the damn thing. Rides like a buckboard, guzzles gas, eats tailiights and headlight bulbs like mentos, but is a complete tank. No other vehicle has survived my wife this long.
I had an 05 Liberty Renegade for 12 years (bought new) -- gas mileage was a disappointment, I never got anywhere near 22 mpg mainly I think due to the obsolete 4 speed automatic, combined with my pretty short commute to work. The thing ate brake rotors -- 2005 was the first year with 4 wheel disk brakes, and I think they were undersized for the application. The seats were flat and not super comfortable, just sort of OK, but otherwise the interior was decent. One thing was the switches for the power windows were on the center console, not the doors, so I was always confused for a bit when I switched with my other car. The other disappointment was the roof rack and rock rails -- I was expecting them to be aluminum alloy, like the Nissan Xterra, but they were cheap steel with silver paint that peeled and rusted eventually. I didn't see a Renegade before I bought it, unfortunately -- the dealer didn't have one on the lot. Oops. Traded it in with 68K miles on a new 2017 Renegade Trailhawk... Full disclosure: my dad worked for Chrysler for 20 years and both Jeeps I bought using his Employee Purchase discount...
@@chadfletcher5040 it's worth it I have a 09 jeep liberty 2nd gen with now 240000 miles on it and it runs smooth only ever had to replace the alternator and windshield wash sprayer very rugged just guzzles gas in short trips
@@prestonsserious Thanks Preston!! I really appreciate you taking the time to leave feedback! That one sold too fast, but we are looking for a 2nd gen Liberty, he loves the body style! They look so nice and boxy, love that!
Just got a 2008 Jeep Liberty with 76k miles on it and I love it. It’s a 2nd gen and the engine is pretty peppy and I love how it rides especially with the random snowing weather in Chicago. I upgraded from a 2003 impala and I get a lot of compliments on how nice it looks. I LOVE IT 🥰 Who else like the 2nd gen?
I have a 2010 Liberty and I hope you don't have the same experience as I did with repairs. Once I reached 80k miles, that's when things started going all wrong (even before that 80k mile mark, I had major repairs being performed; but not as often). I've been a firm believer in preventative and regular maintenance, but even that hasn't helped. Between the bushings wearing out every 6-8 months to the water pump failing at 101k miles to even the differential nearly blowing up on the PA Turnpike at 145k miles, its been a headache every 2-3 months with something new happening. As of right now, with 149k miles, I'm skeptical that I'm dealing with a head gasket leak and worn out bushings once again. My recommendation is to sell it once something major fails while you still have a higher resale value and not end up like me with a stack of 63 individual invoices for repairs over the past 4.5 years.
@@lol-ji7ww update I’m at 119k miles now, had to replace radiator, heating core and not my air compressor cause my air conditioner doesn’t work. Other than that everything is working fine.
I had a Jeep Liberty 08 with 225,000 miles on it. When I first bought it in 2015 had a little over a 100,000 on it. Yeah I had a few minor maintenance issues. This Jeep was so durable and so reliable. Even when other vehicles have struck this Jeep. I'll be honest in Indiana on the highways. I would literally laugh at the ice and snow. I miss that jeep! My son now owns it. God bless and stay safe.
Love my 2003 3.7 Sport. 220k miles. Replaced transmission at 80k. Towed heavy load from CA to MA. Back right tailight has needed a lot of bulbs. Water pump, alternator, replaced around 130k.150k for radiator. Tire rod around 180k along with oil pan. Some sensors. Had that power window issue. Front seat is breaking. Says it needs window washing fluid all the time. Cold New England winters near ocean. Parts are cheap. Good mechanic. Should make to 300k easy. Love it. Flaws, recalls, and all.
Matthew Valentinas 162k on my 2006 new transmission at 100k had the rear end rebuilt. I just changed the spark plugs 2 weeks ago. Drive it from Iowa to Texas 6 times this year I would do it again in a heartbeat. Super reliable but it sucks down fuel like crazy. Keep the oil changed in it hope to see it last for 300k
How are parts cheap? I paid 52 dollars for 5 plastic connectors to hold the front fender molding together, and 49 bucks for an oil sensor harness. Where are you getting parts?
My parents have that same year jeep. It's at 100,000 miles now. I've replaced valve cover gaskets and done basic fluid changes that's about all it's needed so far.
For the record I ordered one of these new in 01 for the wife when she retired from the USPS and we took delivery of it in Oct of 01. We've had it since. The wife and I were dentists. We could and did buy whatever we wanted. I've owned Escalades and Navigators, King Ranch pick ups, Cresidas, FourRunners, LandCruisers, and more always top shelf, always leather no matter what we got.The Escalade bought the same year as the Libby became a squeak and rattle box inside of two years driving. The KJ is just the way it was. My 06 Lincoln had to be parked under a roof whenever it would rain! The thing leaked and no one could ever find it to stop it from day one! Tell me again how bad ass they are! Back to the Escalade, it squeaked everywhere and inside of three years the head liner was falling down on my head! We had to glue it back up there and I almost forgot to mention that.! We traded it and got that leaking as a bonus that came new with the Navigator. Right on the corner of windshield water got in each time it rained even a little! We went and had the windshield replaced and more to stop that drip on the floor of the Navigator. Liked it and kept it 13 years but that is only because after a time I just didn't care and drove it anyway. We sold it too and I have a King Ranch and the Liberty left. The Liberty is our most trusted vehicle. The KJ Liberty, prelowered due to the age and when we got it (1 inch or so more ground clearance than all after) is just like it was. All the stuff works, including all the controls for the stereo on the steering wheel, and the cruise as well as all the electric stuff. Two window rollers had to be replaced. We got a Limited just the way I wanted it with everything. It's skid plated, has all the traction features offered and after 18 years I have to say it's been a remarkably good rig! No tears in the leather, the interior looks great actually. And that is standing beside some of the so called nicest vehicles made. I feel like Jeep missed the boat with this model they did that several ways but it is a day late and a dollar short now. Personally I think anyone should look at these in the used market. They are safe relatively. They are not bad in my experience for reliability but seem to suck gas due to the small gas tanks. No one wants them to steal them so the insurance is among the cheapest in used cars. Jeep people don't think they are real jeeps and most men think they are too feminine. Still because of this stuff they are cheap used cars usually with leather and low miles and deals compared to other cars.Zippy, fun, lots of visibility and so maneuverable it's just fun to drive! I recommend the leather if you are going to find one as it has held up so well on ours. I think due to the lighter color. The lighter the leather the better it lasts I guess due to the sun and heat. Anyway, we are senior citizens now and we'll die with the KJ we own in the driveway. It's been that good! I could still go down to any dealer and write a check for anything I wanted but what I look for is a CRD in a 05 in one of these Liberties so go figure!
I looked for 3 years for the perfect 2012 Liberty Jet. Mine only has around 55k miles. I just love it. Would like to get a loaded 1st Gen Liberty with that sweet little body style. Considering the new truck but waiting for any flaws to be designed out of it.
I owned a first gen Liberty and really enjoyed it. I thought it was good looking. It was fairly quick and handled well, very well in the snow with the 4 wheel drive. Amazing turning radius. The cargo room was good considering its small size. I never had any problems with it mechanically. You attribute its failure to the fact that it wasn't boxy enough from the get go, but I disagree. The sales really started to dip when they turned it into an ugly box.
I honestly love the Jeep Liberty. It's great for a small car and has saved my bum several times in the snow/rain. I was really unhappy when I found out that it wasn't being made anymore, and I've been paying a lot more attention to the different kinds of Jeep Liberties (Like the Jet) since I got into cars. I miss it!
I have a 2012 series II and I love it, it was badged as a Cherokee in my country. The body design is great, It's taller than a Grand Cherokee, stands out more in a parking lot and looks more like a traditional Jeep. It drives like a car but looks like a tank.
I have had my 2012 Liberty, or Cherokee as they call it here in Brazil for 3 years now. The most reliable car i ever owned, and a very good offroader it is too.
@@kenm4479 The KK & KA platforms are almost exactly the same. Because of this, I wish that both the Nitro and Liberty were discussed in the video. Nonetheless I'd still like to see Marspeed go over the Nitro in the future.
Couldn't hold a candle to the original XJ. Which that itself was a design Chrysler inherited when they bought AMC back in the 80's. The only jeep that was designed under Chrysler thats really worth a damn is the ZJ...
Been driving my 05 Renegade for a decade now. had to replace every ball joint and busing on the vehicle last year but other than that it's been wonderful. Will probably keep it till my oldest is driving.
I also like the Liberty when I bought it because it was one of the first vehicles from the factory you could tow on all four Wheels behind your RV. Plus when it was in tow mode it didn't rack up any more miles.
I am on my SECOND Liberty KK model right now. Both of them purchased with 55k miles on them. The first one was a 2008 that I loved and kept until 150k miles. Knowing that the pool was getting thin, 5 years ago I replaced it with a 2011 Jet model and I love it even more! It now has 118K on it and is going strong. It tows my trailers, moves my cargo and does well in the snow... all for under $10,000! Pretty hard to beat!
Just bought a well taken cared 2004 Jeep Liberty Columbia Edition 4X4 a week ago with 136,080 miles (219,000 kms) . Just love everything about her.. especially those round seductive headlamps. Driving her is fun and sporty, and I am amazed on how much cargo space that's available.. Brad frm Vernon B.C. Canada
I have the Liberty latitude also, 2012, mines white, black leather, love the sunroof, also love how high I sit in it, turning ratio is amazing, and it's fun to drive....how do you like yours?
I just got a 2012 Liberty Latitude with 66k on the odo, owned previously by a little old lady who barely drove it. i love mine, no sunroof, but black with slate grey leather interior. Bought it for 4WD rough winters. I sold my 07 Magnum to get it. Maggie was nice but she was RWD and horrible in bad weather.
@@chadfletcher5040 if you live in a place that’s snows or he likes to camp then go for it. Heck even if the area can flood a little, it will get through it if the water isn’t more than a foot deep. But be ready for lots of repairs. Something always breaking on it every year. Weak transmission as well so test the car on a hill in reverse to see if it is ok If you can get a good one you should be ok. But it’s no Toyota or Honda so expect to be making repairs and sometimes expensive ones especially what they called the computer of the car aka the TIPM. If that goes out it’s $1100
@@chadfletcher5040 haven't had any issues with it, I have other oil changed every 3 months no matter what, and I've had the brakes done...that's it, I've owned it 3yrs now...
Had a 2007 Limited. I really loved that car. If Jeep brought that first generation back, I would be first in line to buy one. I had mine for ten years with over 173,000 miles on it and still ran great. My favorite car I owned despite the lousy window the lousy window regulators. I wish I never got rid of it.
Well I got the 2008 Liberty for graduating 2020 during this pandemic, and all’s I can say is I’m happy with it, though I will be installing a Bluetooth Stereo into it for a more modern touch.
I've owned 2. Wife still drives one. Compared to todays crossover cars, the body on frame liberty is a real truck with 5000 pound tow capacity and real 4wd. Very few quality issues with ours and we'll drive it until it dies.
I bought my Jeep Liberty (Cherokee in Australia ) Limited in 2010 and still love it. No problems over the years, I love the simple styling inside, the noisy engine suits the vehicle and suggests it some grunt and power (but in reality it drives like a truck which I love) My Jeep has a cute nudge bar, side steps, electronic sunroof and roof racks. The interior load space has been fantastic for moving large loads. I give it a 10 out of 10. ❤️ my Jeep !
2003 Liberty sport was my first vehicle and I loved it. I got it two years ago and I drove it everywhere. Perfect car and would recommend for everyone. A distracted driver ran a stop sign and tboned me totaling the car and created a huge crater on the side. I was unharmed. I guess the Liberty is very safe for tbone impacts.
I have a 2006 jeep liberty renegade edition. I have to say its been my favorite jeep i have owned so far out of the 7 i have its earned a place in my colection. I also did a ton of work to it. 3.75 inch lift, 33 inch tires, custom made a roof rack, replaced the fron fog lights and roof light bar with KC lights. Arb front bumper. Chopped off the muffler and ran a straight pipe sounds better than my 4.0s and even my 06 5.7L hemi commander.Only issues ive had is a water pump gasket failure and a cooling fan relay failure she sits at 180k miles currently
I have a 2012 liberty, limited edition and I’ve had it for about two years very few problems had to replace the window regulator, which is a common problem on the liberties I am honestly amazed how well this car has aged, especially with the amenities are very similar to what you get now
Rocking my 2008 Liberty Kk with a 2.5” lift to this day with 152k miles and still going strong!! Me and my wife both like it much better than our previous Grand Cherokee. Highly recommend!
You say the Liberty was a failure because it abandoned the Cherokee’s boxy styling-and yet the curvy first gen Liberty sold exceptionally well, leading the class for several years. It was the boxy second gen Liberty that didn’t sell.
I bought my 04 Liberty Limited in Sept of 03, and it's still going strong. Over the time I've had it I've only had 3 things go wrong with it. I had a tensioner pulley break, I had a valve cover gasket leak, and I had to replace the charcoal cannister because it was throwing an EVAP code. It drives nice, and gets around well in the snow. My only complaint is the gas milege.
@A M They're mostly marketing terms. Most car manufacturers refer to their crossovers as SUVs. Subaru refers to their all wheel drive system as four wheel drive.
I own an 06 CRD. Best vehicle I've ever owned. Repairs are easy to do and besides the normal wear and tear maintenance that is absolutely required, the known bugs are easily dealt with. Normal maintenance like oil changes, transfer case and rear axle fluid changes (yes people, these fluids don't last forever). My biggest problem, which is destroying the vehicle right now...I have noticed that a peice of clear tape is left on the bottom middle drains of the front doors from the factory which has cause premature rusting of the bottom doors. I replaced both doors with nicer used ones, and thoses doors had the tape on them too. I love this vehicle. It owes me nothing.
I don't know why American car companies don't understand brand loyalty. Like you mentioned in this video they got rid of the Cherokee name even though it had a great following and brand recognition, then they bring it back years later... Ford did the same thing with the Taurus, changing the name to the Five Hundred, and then bringing back the Taurus names when sales of the Five Hundred took a nose dive. Toyota on the other hand kept names like the Camry and Corolla around for decades!
I understand brand loyalty, but here's the thing: Cherokee is a Native American affiliated name, and the Cherokee Nation has asked Chrysler to stop using the name, but they unkindly declined. They didn't stop using it entirely because the Grand Cherokee was still around, and Liberty is not a wildlife related name either. In fact, Chrysler changed the name of their minivan from the Town & Country to the Pacifica in 2017 when it had been named the Town & Country for over two decades, and the Pacifica seems more popular. I think they should try using a name like Habitat instead of Cherokee because Habitat would attract Jeep buyers because that is highly wildlife related, and it would make people who are considerate of Native Americans more likely to buy it. Schools that used to have the Redskins as their mascot, and schools that had the Indians as their mascots were forced to change them by people of those ethnicities because they felt it was offensive to them, and Native Americans feel that way about the Jeep Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, and Grand Cherokee L now, so I would try changing it to the Habitat, Grand Habitat, and Grand Habitat L.
@@andyhaas3620 so should Notre Dame change the name of their team from the Fighting Irish to something else?? That sounds more offensive since it implies that the Irish get drunk and start bar fights. Should everyone change the names of everything just because a few are butt hurt, cuz I’m sure you can find some pissed off people everywhere for different names.
My mom has a 2012 Jeep Liberty, and I personally really love it. Even with its issues (like how the heat doesn’t really work in the winter, wind noise etc.), it’s been a really reliable car for probably the 3-4 years we’ve had it. It’s gotten us out of a ton of tricky situations, and I’m probably gonna buy one with less mileage once I have enough money. Yes it has issues, but I love everything about the car anyway. 🤍
I’ll say one thing, it got me out of plenty of sticky situations. Snow, rain, small floods, mud and a couple other types. Never got stuck once. Repairs on the car was bananas but with the way people talking about the car in this post, I guess I got a bad one. 2008 Jeep Liberty was a money pit. Limps around now with no AC, wiper acting funny, and other issues. Just a mess. Must have spend over 10k fixing it in a 5 year period.
Mileage has nothing to do with the car's condition. It's about neglect. Take it from someone who's dad has worked as an automotive electrician in the past. There are diesel Mercedes taxis in Europe with well over a million miles on the clock If the previous owner was a cheap*ss and didn't perform the periodic maintenance, or just let the car run with problems for a long time, it will develop chronic problems that will be hard to fix for the new owner. Sadly most people prefer to just use and beat a car to hell and just sell it then buy a new car, and the headache will be yours if you buy a used car without doing your research
I have a 2012 Jeep liberty jet and I really have no complaints it’s over 110,000 miles and still going strong, I would like new rims and new bigger tires though for my jeep
I have a 09 Liberty Limited with a 341,000 km on the dash, all OEM Mopar parts except for the suspension lift. No issues, regular maintenance and the only thing I’ve replaced was the left rear wheel speed sensor connector, but other than that, I’ve gotten no issues.
Bought one in 2012 new as a fleet car. Sold it for a Subaru Crosstrek a few years later. Fast forward to 2021, saw my old jeep for sale with 200K and bought it back, lol. It still looks and drives like it did when new. For a car that I always felt was underwhelming, it has lasted the test of time with the basic (inefficient) 4-speed transmission and the 3.7L engine. Always liked that the sport liberty had a low range gear, while the Laredo Grand Cherokee after 2005 did not.
Great video man!! I own a 2012 Limited model and it’s been great, i love my truck!! I’m from Venezuela! The Cherokee KK as known here was on sale up to 2016, FCA of Venezuela because a lot of problems with the government, decided not to bring the newer model until things here settle down (spoiler alert things didn’t settle) instead they decided to bring the newer model of the Grand Cherokee just as a Limited “4G” model, idk 😂. Your videos are always great! Sending lots of love and positive vibes!
For me, I've had no real complaints for both the Liberty Gen 1 and the Gen 2, 2-wheel drive models (we live in Florida). And that was coming out of a Nissan Xterra in to the liberties, which I loved the Xterra too. We bought the Gen1 Liberty and my wife loved driving it. My kids also learned how to drive, out of the Gen 1. I'm 6'2, 235lbs and had no head room or body room issues. It was very functional, simplistic and ergonomically laid out. I never felt the need for 4WD with either models since the traction and ground clearance was good. Both models had the 3.7L V6 and basically the core engine is bulletproof mechanically. Yes, Fuel mileage wasn't as good as I hoped it could be, but adequate. Yes I did have to replace the window drive motors on the Gen 1 (cheap on ebay and easy to do yourself) and the TIPM on the Gen 2 (found it on-line for a good price and installed it myself in 15 mins) and both models I had to replace the radiator ($200 delivered on ebay and the mechanic charged $200 to install them both, so not bad) and the A/C in the Gen 1 and of course, brakes and tires on both models. What I really liked was all parts were available via 3rd party for cheap, or at any of the autoparts stores. But the real savings were Ebay and Amazon on parts, delivered to your door. So no paying big $$ at the dealership for both proprietary parts and specialized expensive labor. Any good mechanic can work on them and there are lots of How-to youtube videos on repairing anything on them. But other than that, we've put 150k miles on both models with no other mechanical issues and most of the work was easy access enough to do myself. Both my Liberties has no rust issues whatsoever. But they were bought new here in Florida and live here. I'm not sure about road salt corrosion up north, but most vehicles up north have that same issue. You just need to constantly rinse it off and treat it as you go, instead of ignoring that the salt can cause issues. Anyway, They drive better than the Wranglers (my brother has one), are way more affordable than the Wranglers, no real mechanical issues and are inexpensive on the used market. I don't know why people think they are not better than the XJ Cherokee! My Gen 2 rides, looks and feels far superior than the XJ Cherokees. I'm getting ready to sell my Gen 2 in mint condition and are now looking for a low mileage Gen 2 2012-13 to replace it (maybe 4x4 this time so I can lift it). They tow my 17ft boat well and are overall very functional, utilitarian vehicles, no non-sense and very practical. I tried liking the new Cherokees, but they are ugly and feels more like driving a car than a utility vehicle. I keep saying I want to buy a Wrangler one day and then keep asking myself..."Why?" Yes they look cooler, but they are pricey and unless I am into heavy off-roading, then there is no other reason to spend that much more on a day-to-day driver with light duty off-roading. I'm really hoping they will come back with a 3rd Gen version of the Liberty, yes improve the power train, the ride, the fuel efficiency, but keep that rugged, boxy, utilitarian look.
Ted Haas GM is bringing back the Hummer and making it electric. Jeep should bring back some of its older models as well and refresh them, but they do not need to be electric. I can’t believe there is going to be an electric Hummer. I hope Jeep doesn’t go that route.
Proud owner of a kj 04 CRD sport , Cherokee badged and it handles the ozzy offroad tracks well! (I do have a few mods) and there is great devoted community that loves these cars in Australia, the crd’s are especially rare Haven’t had many problems with my crd either has proved to be quite reliable! They have Good fuel economy, great on road, great offroad, great lsd ( has saved me a few times off-road) great cargo space, definitely a slept on a car (Personally can’t say much for the other models though)
Got a first generation of my own and I freaking love everything about it it's tough and it's off road as hell without breaking its practicality you'll learn to love the look of it lol
I just bought a 2003 Jeep Liberty Limited Edition last month with 64,000 miles on it for $3,800 (needed some work). All I have had to do to it so far was have the front and rear pinion seals replaced along with axle fluid also replaced, new muffler and tailpipe, new lift arms for the hood and rear glass, new Sylvania Zevo LEDs and other LED lights, TPS replaced, PCV replaced, front driver window regulator and motor replaced, oil change to Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30, a WIX oil filter, and a WIX air filter. ~$1,000 later and it runs like a champ now. I like it a lot. I intend to keep this for a long time.
I currently own a 2006 Liberty that I bought in 2015. It has been a very reliable vehicle for me so far with relatively little having to be spent on it. I did have to have quite extensive rocker panel replacement last fall to get it through inspection but that's not too bad for a 14 year old car in Canada. So long as nothing catastrophic mechanically goes wrong, I'll probably have it for a couple more years.
Mine has 205k miles, no leaks or issues. All I've had to do is the routine maintenance on it. Had it for almost 10 years and put 160k miles and plan on having it for much longer
We had an '04. We now have a 2011. The '04 was much more "jeep". It was like a Tonka toy. It was more nimble and had a tighter turning radius. It seemed to be lighter and more responsive. The 2011 Jet is "nicer".. but I miss the old one sometimes.
I have an 04 liberty renegade. After dumping first gear I was sold. Both things you mentioned are probably my favorite things about it also. I personally feel the cooling system like the pump, reservoir, upper hose and heater core is too complex and takes up allot of space for how mediocre it actually is.
I have an 05 with 205k mikes. Items replaced, radiator, oil pan gasket, water pump, power steering pump n rack and pinion. Next on the list is replace the suspension parts for front n rear as they are really worn out which is typical for the age and mileage on this truck. I love this jeep and plan on keeping it for at least 5 more years
I have a 2011 Liberty with almost 90K miles. I’ve had it for 5-1/2 years with no major problems at all-we keep up with routine maintenance. It’s no luxury vehicle, but I love it!
Barbara Pryor I have a 2009 Liberty with 180k miles and it’s still going strong. It’s all about maintenance like you mentioned. If you treat the vehicle well then it will treat you well.
I am still driving my 2006 Jeep Liberty Limited and still LOVE IT!! Yes I wish it was more fuel efficient especially with gas prices above $4 and a long commute but all said and done I love the styling - (hate the boxy look of Jeeps) like the large back window, being able to see above most traffic and the overall size is comfortable. I am amazed how much I can carry in it and not have to borrow someone's truck!
Love my liberty. Super simple vehicle and easy to work on for the most part. Except for the damn heater core that you have to remove the entire dash to get to. The only way to run this vehicle is straight piped
Finally a Liberty video,I bought an 08' w/94k last summer. It now has 103k and my only real complaint is why they used the 3.7L and not the better Penstar 3.6L....... I haven't taken my off road or really had a good reason to use 4x4 yet but winter in Pennsylvania hasn't got in full swing yet. Did a 600 mile road trip and got 22mph and no issues, its my first jeep.
I'm no mopar guy, but I like these reviews. They really help me appreciate why people buy these cars. An accountant might explain why a Corolla is great for your finances, and yuppies might declare a Mercedes the only car worth getting into, but mopar is just so American. A car can do well here just because it can tow your boat and still fit in your garage when you are done.
I never got the impression the 3.7 L was a bad engine, just kind of meh. The big problem seemed to be the window regulators. Whoever Jeep kept using was supplying terrible ones. I kept one long enough that I got 3 replaced for free under the AutoZone warranty.
Ive put 250,000 onto my 3.7. Motor is fine with maintenance, but the tranny was the weak link. only complaint on the 3.7 is aluminum bearings. Should always go with a stronger alloy when dealing with larger mass motors.
Bradley Bonham EXCEPT for the 2002 (and some 2003) which had the 45RFE versus the 42RLE which is the weak link transmission. The early Liberty’s “truck” transmission not only had an external transmission cooler, but it also had TWO internal filters, a traditional flat filter that ingested the oil from the pan into the valvebody, but also a spin on type filter housed inside the transmission, accessible only with the pan off.
A lot of the 3.7L had pre-mature cam wear problems due to not getting enough oil, I have an 05 grand cherokee that ticks to no end because of this issue, replaced lifters and didn't change a thing actually made the tick louder!
@@jayc4904 could it be an exhaust leak? I know that mine has an exhaust leak that has an uncanny resemblance to a lifter tick. I know this because my 74 Mercury has a lifter tick, and the tick on the liberty only started after the exhaust was removed at ~240k
As for the gas tank fire problem, Chrysler didn't want to fix the gas tank, so they came up with a cheap fix - adding a hatch to the back of the vehicle.
I own a 09 Liberty and I like it and is easy to work on, Also trying to find RWD/4WD set ups now is near impossible. Tows great. Lousy gas mileage in town but great on highway. I will drive it till it falls apart. The only drawback I had was the factory sunroof which had a know factory flaw that the dealer would not touch or help out with.
Very well done video, and very well made UA-cam channel. I can see you’re a mopar guy all the way down to your bones, and I appreciate you making these videos and giving us details on certian Chrysler products. Keep up the good work
I have a 2004 Liberty with the 3.7L engine and it is great. The only issues I have had with it since I have owned it is head gaskets. The windows sound rough, but they don't fall down like they did on the 2001 Liberty I used to have. The transmission is fine as well.
Jeep liberty was a ok jeep 😋👌🏼I drove two b4 both gens it's to bad that they dont make them no more but awesome video like always 🙂👍🏼 🤔 did you do the grand caravan yet I dont remember
I had a 2004 Columbia Edition and it was a tank! I put 125k miles on it, which also included a mid-run 2.5” lift kit and 31” tires. Without ABS, traction control and many other modern things to go wrong, only the water pump had to be replaced. It was powerful, rugged and I literally ran rings around a friend’s H2 in sand when he got stuck. It was 9 years old when I traded it in and that was only because of rust up here in salty NY. Good times...
It’s funny when the video mentioned the seven-slot grille. Jeep sued Hummer and lost because they began using a seven slot grille as well. Because Jeep didn’t consistently use a seven slot grille, the court sided with GM. After Hummer went under, Jeep quietly trademarked it
I’m 20; and the 2010 liberty was my first car. After 5 years it’s done fairly well. I’ve only had to replace the catalytic converter and that’s just because of emissions testing. I can fit my kayak into the liberty thanks to the back window opening. It drives well and handles great in the snow. My only complaint is gas mileage. Overall, by taking preventive maintenance it’s doing pretty good. 125,000 miles and still running strong. Today the liberty looks massive next to new mid sized suvs.
If you get one used it's fun to go through the improvements that enthusiasts have documented and add after market CRD specific goodies that make it super reliable and fun day driver. This is considering you are buying used and weren't subjected to factory pricing and living through the headaches Chrysler subjected direct customers to yourself...
I'm an old XJ owner, I actually liked the look of the first gen Liberty but really hated the lack of a solid front axel. One thing to note, the parts for that unique sliding canvas top are no longer being made...
@@travishardaway6348 Agreed the T&C was pretty cool there were so many limited editions that's hard to find and I remember watching that commercial of Celine Dion doing commercials with Chrysler and the T&C
I currently drive a 2006 Limited 4x4 with the diesel engine. It also only has 105k miles on it in 2023. I love it. I have mine built with a 2 inch lift w/new suspension, bumper, roof rack, and bigger tires and it is a beast off road. I have taken it on 4 night overlanding trips in Colorado with no issues, keeps up with all the other bigger off roaders. And I only paid $7k for it.
I owned the last Gen 1, 2007 Jeep Liberty which saved my life when a deer did a body slam over the entire windshield at 45mph. I have since owned the last Gen 2012 Jeep Liberty... I like the 2nd Gen best but given that I am 6' 3", I cannot buy a wrangler since my head hits the rollbar. I will likely buy a new F250.
I had a 2006, that I totaled, and now have a 2008. The one thing that stands out for me is I can wrench on them. I will probably pick up another KK, while you can still easily get them. No complaints.
I have an 04 and I don't really have any complaints about the interior. Looks better and has held up better than my wife's 09 elantra. I guess my only complaint is while I can get a half sheet of plywood in the back, I can't get it to lay flat. If only it were just a bit wider. Can't do whole sheets with the glass up either since the back window isn't wide enough.
Y’all can’t tell me the interior on this car isn’t fine when I have eyes, and even some recent Toyota’s still have a interior similar to this quality. So, coming from being rapped by Mercedes Benz, this interior is FINE. and the design is GOOD.
Timing is everything. Jeep answered some of the complaints of the previous model with more rear seat room, more power, smoother ride, more overall refinement and it looked more like a jeep (not the girly look )......but then the recession hit......and suv sales dried up overnight. ...crossovers were the big thing.
I reluctantly bought my 2004 Liberty Sport in May 2005 with 19k miles on it. It wasn’t what I wanted at the time but what I could afford, I hated it, but after a few weeks I was in love and I still have it today with 176k miles on it. It’s been the absolute most reliable, fun to drive vehicle we’ve ever owned. We’ve had to put less than $1,000 total in actual engine repair costs into it costing roughly $200-$300 per repair and it still runs perfectly like the day I bought it. I love it so much I want to be buried in it! I looked at the 2nd Gen in 2009, but I didn’t like the way it drove. The engine was way too small for it and had a really squishy ride, it wandered all over the place, it felt like driving a marshmallow compared to the super tight handling and ride of the Liberty. I’m so glad that I never upgraded to a newer model, I know I wouldn’t have been nearly as happy with it as the Liberty and would have regretted it. My husband is on his 4th vehicle in the 18 years that we’ve had my Liberty… He finally got a Jeep!!
Bought an 05 new for my wife, still driving the damn thing. Rides like a buckboard, guzzles gas, eats tailiights and headlight bulbs like mentos, but is a complete tank. No other vehicle has survived my wife this long.
Hahaha LOL 😂 😂
Your wife sounds like my mom👍
My want to be wife is like my mom!
your ground wires are not working correctly, the bulbs will stop burning out.
I have only replaced one taillight on my 2005 Liberty. You may have a high voltage problem or bad grounding.
I have a 06 Jeep liberty with 210,000 miles on it and no complaints
200000 miles with a blown head gasket. I got rid of that lemon

I have had an 06 CRD Limited for over ten years.
I am looking for the same based on your helpful observations
I looked for 3 years for the perfect 2012 Liberty Jet. Mine only has around 55k miles. I just love it. Would like to get a loaded 1st Gen Liberty with that sweet little body style. Considering the new truck but waiting for any flaws to be designed out of it.
I just got the most beautiful 2010 Jeep Liberty finally. It drives like no other car I have ever had. Jeep is the way to go.
My thought exactly
But I like the box I have lol but seriously the turning radius is amazing I turn in parking lots with impossible turns just to show off lol
Quick???
I wouldn’t say it was quick but it was a champ in the snow and mud. Never got stuck
I totally agree! I have a Gen 1 with over 233K miles and Gen 2 with over 105 K because I love the Liberty model so much

I also like the Liberty when I bought it because it was one of the first vehicles from the factory you could tow on all four Wheels behind your RV. Plus when it was in tow mode it didn't rack up any more miles.
It’s nice and compact. The Liberty tucks right in behind the allegro bus. They are awesome towables.

Mike Zerker and it’s not getting better. Ford is going to use its Mustang name on a newer model. Certain model names should be left alone.
The Jeep Liberty is so popular in my area, that you can't find any for sale. They're all on the road.
There are diesel Mercedes taxis in Europe with well over a million miles on the clock
If the previous owner was a cheap*ss and didn't perform the periodic maintenance, or just let the car run with problems for a long time, it will develop chronic problems that will be hard to fix for the new owner.

Bought one when they first came out. Had it for 13 years. The best. Got a 2011 now. I love liberty. Excellent in snow
I have a liberty and I love it. It is awesome in the snow. I'm sad they stopped making it
201000 miles on my 09 Liberty and still going strong.
2006 jeep liberty, 2nd owner, clean title ment condition, and with 127000 original miles💪😎
Proud owner of a kj 04 CRD sport , Cherokee badged and it handles the ozzy offroad tracks well! (I do have a few mods) and there is great devoted community that loves these cars in Australia, the crd’s are especially rare
Haven’t had many problems with my crd either has proved to be quite reliable!
They have Good fuel economy, great on road, great offroad, great lsd ( has saved me a few times off-road) great cargo space, definitely a slept on a car
(Personally can’t say much for the other models though)
I prefer the rounded 2002- 2007 body style compared to the squared 2008-2012 body style
I have a 2009 Jeep Liberty my daughter drove for college. I use it now on the ranch. Never had any issues with it. It’s been very reliable.
Wife had an ‘05 Limited when we were dating - was a good car, and great in the snow
I have 2005 sport with 140k miles. I have zero complaints. I've running Jeeps since 89.
I still have my 2011 Jeep Liberty, still love it
I still have my 2002 liberty sports and love it. Solid, no rusts altho I really dont take care of it. Looking forward for getting a Rubicon 4 door.
Yeah I want that Rubicon as well too
Mine has 205k miles, no leaks or issues. All I've had to do is the routine maintenance on it. Had it for almost 10 years and put 160k miles and plan on having it for much longer
Love my Jeep Liberty Sport 2012 4x4. Runs great!
I have a 2003 jeep liberty but only 80,000 miles and run just fine Grandmother gave it to me before she passed away so it’s really special to me
We had an '04. We now have a 2011.
The '04 was much more "jeep". It was like a Tonka toy. It was more nimble and had a tighter turning radius. It seemed to be lighter and more responsive.
The 2011 Jet is "nicer".. but I miss the old one sometimes.
I have a 04 now bought it with 110k miles on it she is so smooth riding I love it
I have an 04 liberty renegade.
I love this jeep and plan on keeping it for at least 5 more years
I have a 2.4L high output 4 cylinder, 2005 2wd six speed. It’s a very rare Jeep Liberty
Yes do commander next. I liked that truck actually.
When you do Jeeps, you have to add off road ability
@@LukeEdward oh I'm aware. I rebuilt my 45rfe out of my 2002 limited. 240,000 miles when I rebuilt it. 250,000 on body & motor now.
I have an ‘03 liberty with 122k on it and it Just took me on a 900+ mile road trip and it’s its doing its thing.
Great video, now do the XJ...the most loved SUV of all time
I have a 2011 "70th Anniversary Edition" Jeep Liberty. 130,00 miles and running strong!
As for the gas tank fire problem, Chrysler didn't want to fix the gas tank, so they came up with a cheap fix - adding a hatch to the back of the vehicle.
They also installed trailer hitches on all 93-98 Grand Cherokees for free to "fix" the Pinto inspired built in barbecue.
You mean hitch? The fix for mine was a free towing pack, which I'm fine with.
@@joshm3484 Same here they gave me a free tow kit.
Is there a recall of the gas tank/tow package?
@@pharettface Is this something the dealers are doing? How did you get this done?
I own a 09 Liberty and I like it and is easy to work on, Also trying to find RWD/4WD set ups now is near impossible. Tows great. Lousy gas mileage in town but great on highway. I will drive it till it falls apart. The only drawback I had was the factory sunroof which had a know factory flaw that the dealer would not touch or help out with.
Stephen Hale sky slider? Ive seen many people that had issues with that feature.
Thank you for making these videos. I've learned so much from them about cars I like!
Bought one new in 2009 and never had any problems with it for 10 years, really enjoyed it.
ricky safer I have a 2009 and I love it.
Jeep liberty was a ok jeep 😋👌🏼I drove two b4 both gens it's to bad that they dont make them no more but awesome video like always 🙂👍🏼
🤔 did you do the grand caravan yet I dont remember
After Hummer went under, Jeep quietly trademarked it
And now jeep is making the Gladiator. Like the Hummer h2 and h3 they are over priced "lifestyle" vehicles.
Owned mine since new. 2003 sport 3.7. 265,000 on orig engine and trans. Still runs strong. Heavy, solid.....built like a tank.
Got a 2010 Jeep liberty. Has been great to me.. Really I feel like if you take good care of most vehicles they will last.
The only jeep liberty worth getting was the CRD variants but those have their own issues EGR etc
Joeys Cleaning Lady get back to commenting on Bob’s videos. We miss you there! Right back at you
Joeys Cleaning Lady woowoowoowoo
If you get one used it's fun to go through the improvements that enthusiasts have documented and add after market CRD specific goodies that make it super reliable and fun day driver. This is considering you are buying used and weren't subjected to factory pricing and living through the headaches Chrysler subjected direct customers to yourself...
I have a 2012 4x4 Liberty and its' been great ! Bought it in 2012 new .
Liberty Liberty Liberty...Liberty
@Dodge R/T Man thanks fellow Dodger🤣
Liberty Biberty
Or Cherokee, Cherokee, Cherokee...Cherokee, as it was known in the UK!
...and Doug.
I'm an old XJ owner, I actually liked the look of the first gen Liberty but really hated the lack of a solid front axel. One thing to note, the parts for that unique sliding canvas top are no longer being made...
Do one of the Chrysler town and country & the dodge viper.
Both on my list!
You answered your own question
The town and country wasn't a failure. They just eventually cancelled it to make way for the pacifica
Marspeed do the Jeep Comanche please
The interior is fine. Look at the Toyota’s , Honda’s, Hyundai and Kia cars of that time.
Marney Olson yeah very cheap plastic crap in there. Just classic mid 2000’s American cars
I own an 06, my older toyotas had way better interiors. I still like the liberty, but there are panel gaps in the interior I can stick my finger in.
They act like people live in the "interior". Geez, if it gets you from point A to point B reliably, you are good to go. First World Problems, much?
Timing is everything. Jeep answered some of the complaints of the previous model with more rear seat room, more power, smoother ride, more overall refinement and it looked more like a jeep (not the girly look )......but then the recession hit......and suv sales dried up overnight. ...crossovers were the big thing.
They should've made a Jeep Liberty SRT Lmao
Boosted Bricc totally agree
Fk that .. i need my toes to stop freezing in winter over performance .. jk srt would be cool
Don't worry I own one myself, im working on it
I agree
Agree! I had an 05 liberty renegade. Loved it!
