  • In this video we are looking at the Jeep Patriot! Many people agreed it had terrific value, with the base price starting around $15,000, along with bold Jeep styling and good 4x4 capabilities. Sales were always strong right until the end, but the Patriot quickly became outdated, while the other SUVs in the Jeep family drew more attention. Overall, 6 major flaws and reasons that I felt caused this car to be cancelled. Watch along for a full history of the Patriot, from concept in 2005 to its cancellation in 2017!

Ive owned many XJ's and now have 2 Patriots. Love the looks of both as well, but I pretty much dont need an XJ where i live anymore. I do miss the power of the straight 6, damn things were awesome, and 4 wheeling in an XJ is the best for trails. I do love my Patriots for highway driving and zipping around the city.

If you don't mind sharing, what brand/type tires work best for you? I will have practically no off road conditions and minimal snow, more likely icey wintry conditions. Thanks for and suggestions!

I am 7yrs in at roughly 150,160K miles and I am now having a No start issue after cranking..currently trying to figure it out..I've seen a handful of reasons from the starter..to dead security "anti theft" relay to wires near the front driver wheel were corroded. I also saw a video of a key who his only key fob the chip inside was bad and it arms the security and will start but shut off within a second because it can't find the key chip. I installed a Hitch on mine and a after market rack from bass pro because I kayak fish. The other small issue I had is changing the HEADLIGHTS to LED...the computer in my jeep even with professional LED kit causes the LED's to strobe. I replaced the Fog lights to LED for cheap and with ease with some china knock off LEDs from amazon. I have had them 5yrs no issues. The only other thing i'll say is I have heard Jeeps in general run hot..but I find my Jeeps engine compartment is insanely hot and some of the wiring and padding has slighting started melting. I asked other jeep patriot owners around where I live and they said theirs is scary hot as well. I haven't found anything for a reason why or if its safe.

Winter nights can commonly get below -40, so everything run through an LCD infotainment screen can mean waiting for it to heat up before being usable. Plus, it has a classic Jeep look, that is sadly missing from many of the new models. And lastly, the square back allows for taller cargo that simply won't fit in the Compass or Cherokee. Is it sexy? No. But it gets you where you need to go when you need to get there.

    Its my first car
    It's decent honestly
I have the 2.4l cvt fwd one
It's slow and it has a small gas tank but it does pretty well.
It gets me where I need to go safely and fast enough.
I'm a poor college student so the combined 25 mpg is nice.
I got it at 64k miles and its almost at 100 now after a year.
So I drive it pretty hard lol.
The ac compressor needed to get replaced and now so does the abs module.
The front suspension clunks so yeah you're totally right about it having suspension issues but so far it only clunks so im not too worried it about it now. The car does vibrate violently so I need to replace the motor mounts.
It's not ideal but for a car with almost 100k miles and me being like the 9th owner including someone who was a smoker. It's held up amazingly well and I'm positive as long i take car of it it'll last another 10.
    Great starter car.
It's like a nice beater. I'm not too worried about scratches and bumps but it still looks nice and takes me and my girl wherever we need to go.
Also, patriots have such nice booties lol

Before sales I was a car mechanic and a delivery driver, of sold cars for garages, so my experience of vehicles in snowy weather is extensive. Why Chrysler would choose the Compass over the Patriot is amazing considering every Compass owner I knew HATED it and had major trouble with them. You never see older Compasses where I live as they barely made it past a 5 year life span however Patriots are very common but not on used car lots as owners tend to keep them.

Only recently am I experiencing a potential mechanical failure which I am positive is related to the CVT. Another odd thing which the dealer didn't want to help with is the doors. They seem to be uneven and make a strange popping sound when we open and close them. Oh well. Great bargain and so reliable

We have a 2012 Patriot 2x4 with the 2.4 engine. We purchased it with 60,000 from a fleet service company. The vehicle was super clean when we bought it. The ride was solid.
The first problem we had was the CVT transmission at 80,000. The trans made a terrible whining sound and the trans overheat light would come on. If you drove the vehicle easy you
could get where you needed to go, but not quickly. We had the transmission serviced with the factory recommended fluid and that fixed the problem. 85K was front brakes. At 90,000 the vehicle was running poorly and we had to replace the coils which fixed the problem. 100,000 we replaced a cracked exhaust manifold. 110,000 was the crank position sensor and front brakes and rotors. Drive axle, rear shocks and rear brakes at 120K. 125K was the crank position sensor again (buy the dealer one). The paint and the interior are still good at 125k. We put on aftermarket wheels and blacked out the grill which made the vehicle look 100 times better in my opinion. The vehicle still has a solid ride with no rattles or vibration. Good car if you keep up with the maintenance.

I traded for a Black 2016 Jeep Patriot in 2022 because I owned a FWD Nissan Rogue outright, with bald tires, and I live in Iowa now and was looking for something better on ice. I love the 2.4L 4x4 engine so far. No issues and I feel like the fuel economy holds up today, although it does have a small 13.5 gallon tank. It's rated 22-23 in town MPG and 30 MPG on the highway. That's not quite as good as the Nissan Rogue Sport, which has an ECO mode button, allowing me to get upwards of 38 mpg on the highway in the right conditions. Sometimes more. So I will miss the technology I lost with the Nissan, but that's ok. I'm a simple guy, and I find the Black Jeep Patriot to be one of the better looking vehicles out there to be honest. I paid up for it at 11k, but I really dig this thing in Black. I've gotten a lot of compliments already. It is NOT a CVT. Personally I really like mine (2011 manual North edition) for what it is, just hit 100k kms on it and it drives really smooth, however, relay box is at a terrible location, prone to corrosion on relay contacts. Going to get the X69 10 year extended warranty done on it for rear crossmember rust-through (highly recommend checking into this if you have rust-through on either front or rear crossmembers and have up to a 2012 model) and will be putting in a bunch of new suspension parts while they are under there (toe links, upper/lower links, trailing arms and bushings). I guess my only real complaints are early suspension problems (cheaper parts than oem readily available so not too bad), not always easy to work on mechanically (namely alternator being in a very weird location), and that's about it. Other than that I really like my Patriot despite others around me telling me its a piece of crap lol... its my piece of crap and it works for me haha

You hit a key point in saying that the media hated the Patriot. They acted as if the Pat should be the same thing as the CRV or Rav4. Both the CRV and RAV4 started off as pretty cool little vehicles but then they morphed into suburban yuppie comfortmobile nightmares with much higher price tags, neither of which could go offroad anymore. A friend of mine took his Rav4 offroad and lost the whole front molding. For the price, you couldn't touch a vehicle with so much offroad capability for anything even close to the Pat's price. Nothing can beat a Pat in the snow either, at least nothing in it's price range with the except of the Renegade which is about even.
My biggest complaint is with the suspension. The front suspension wore out prematurely in all vehicles in that 30-40k range but remember, I was taking them offroad. Once I replaced those parts, the Pat's were good to go for a long time. Second, you have to change the spark plugs more often than in most cars, they recommend 30k. Otherwise, the hesitate and buck at around the 2000rpm range.
A friend of mine took her Pat all of the way to over 200k and I have never worn one out and currently have 2.

I built my wife her 1st 4x4, 92 xj, and she absolutely loved it. When it was time for a newer jeep, she came across a 17 patriot latitude, 2.4 awd auto........17 latitude wasnt on your list. I added a Rocky Road 2.25" lift with 245/65's. Highway 70mph ac on for 330mi netted 26mpg. It only has 50kmi on it now 17aug22. So far, only issue we've had is random wipers turning on.

Having never owned one mainly because I'm biased against cvts and I haven't needed to replace my "economy" car ('05 sebring- 2.4l i4, 4-speed auto) since I first got her in 2008, I thought it was a cool little suv that resembled much of the earlier cherokees. I'm okay if the appearance is a little "outdated" and its not all teched out like other comparable vehicles, I just didn't need it and didnt want a cvt.

I just purchased a 2007 4x4 Limited and I am absolutely loving it! I of course am not a huge fan of the CVT, having issues with my old Sentra, but nonetheless it's nice to have a car that can kind of do it all. Just replaced the front brakes and rotors since the rotors were warped and it's running (and braking) like a dream. Excited to have many adventures in this car, and I hope to take good care of it and make it last as long as I can.

I have a 2015 Patriot High altitude trim, awd all the time, sunroof, leather heated seats,, with a 2.4L engine which is somewhat noisy but then its a jeep, been thru floods, mud, sand, snow blizzards, heat waves, has not let me down yet. Bought it new and for the price the value is great, so under rated, this little box with it's refined roughgetnes and heritage can stand proud next to it's bigger brother.

I just inherited a 2015 Patriot and by the looks of the comments, I may have stumbled upon a winner! 2.4L with 65K miles. So far I enjoy driving it. My only complaint is it tends to have more road noise and wished the transmission shifted at lower RPMs.

The Patriot handles really nice, my only complaint is the CVT, it’s really annoying having to basically floor it in order to get on the highway. Half of the time when you go to merge on you’re only at like 45

I’ve had a 15 since 18, it was a low mileage lease turn in, it’s been great other than the CVT. And when idling it sounds like a semi. It is the latitude so it’s fancier than most, heated seats, power sunroof, that kind of thing.

My 2009 manual Patriot is still going strong with 295,000 miles. I bought it new. I change the oil monthly and hopefully I'll get another 3 years out of the motor? If it goes, I'll buy a $500 used 2.4 and put it in. Lol
I used it to pull my Son's Quarter Midget race car around the midwest. Best memory was sitting in between big motorhomes with 40 foot stacker trailers at Eldora for the Grand Nationals. By the end of the weekend, my Son got second place and all those big motorhome teams were gone. My Son, our pitty, me and the little Patriot were one of the last to leave the track with a cool trophy.
    Great car and great memories.
