The bassist can make a simple bassline sound spectacular. The pianist makes you want to get up and dance. The drummer instills a ton of energy into his playing. And about Roy... no words are needed, really. A simply magnificent performance which captures the very essence of jazz. Every time I'm watching this it feels like it's the first time. RIP Roy.

what "offbeat" are people talking about, it's obviously just shifted to create the groove. you can tell by how seamlessly it goes into the full arrangement in the end of the solo. I thought it was cool and I can definitely sense the beat he was "talking" about.

My friend, the great drummer and Ed Thigpen, said once that whatever a musician played up on stage, it was their gig. So pretentious or not, it's not for us to judge. I wasn't a huge fan of that solo but that's not my flavor. It was obviously yours, so that's another reason why people should never judge the playing of anyone in jazz.

Roy blow the house down at the Ahoy Center in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. The venue had a full house. It was interesting because in Europe, young folk are really into jazz. In jazz musicians are always trying to find new ways to achieve a strange sound and just go with it. Dizzy Gillespie flipped jazz on its side with a trumpet that had a bell bent upwards after someone accidentally broke it. He played it and a unique sound came out and he fell in love with it and had a custom trumpet made with the bell curved up.

A quiet and retiring person in life, Hargrove struggled with kidney failure. He died of cardiac arrest brought on by kidney disease on November 2, 2018 at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. According to his manager, Larry Clothier, Hargrove had been on dialysis for the last 14 years of his life.
    Edit:
This makes me sad, because the late great Mr. Roy Hargrove was one of my favorite trumpet players. I was absolutely in love with his mastery over the trumpet. Loved his style. I had no idea that he had died. I've never met you in person Roy, but I will miss your music. Will miss seeing your interviews (especially), on UA-cam. RIP bro. The day that I first saw this video, the piano player (Sullivan Fortner) became my favorite piano player in the world. The quintet played so beautifully together. They all played with passion, and gave it their all.

I agree, but audience started clapping because the key player told them to. 1:42 .

5:40 The drummer looks like he's thinking 'How the fuck am I supposed to come back in?' Then the pianist just starts playing the head and gives him the cue. Awesome.

The drummer isn’t lost if that’s what you mean. As far as confusing rhythms go that solo was pretty easy to follow along. And he’s was still marking out the changes.

I just love how the drummer was mocking the audience after the piano solo

      More melodious
Edit : Monk's rythms and fat bass drops, but almost Eromm Garner's chords :)
