16:45 that oil system that you described is how those Rotax aircraft 912/914 engines use..If you use the piston displacement and blow by to move the oil into the remote tank, you’ll have to plug any other crankcase vents and only vent off the top of the remote oil tank. Go check out a light sport Rotax powered plane and have the owner show you the “burping” technique.
@ my only concern with that would be cold oil and the restricted drain back. Good call about the windage tray (scraper) that seems to help some, but you may want to consider the minimum oil temp before you increase RPM for takeoff so you don’t suck the tank dry.
@@thomasaltruda The drain on this would be like a -12, 3/4 inch. So, it should drain well. I use oil no thicker than 40 weight right now. I have to let the oil temp come up now before I go to full power anyway.
She's looking real good Don, O-ringing the oil plate would be cool. Glad you're getting the car issues figured out, sucks having to trouble shoot these complex systems.

Don, you’re truly a renaissance man. Your mechanical knowledge is staggering. Your crash may have provided you with the time to rethink your plane’s design. Fortunately you and the Corsair sustained relatively minimal damage. The next time you fly it, I believe it will perform better, and will be a safer aircraft. Thanks for the update. Feel better.
It's interesting that Subaru engineered an Oil Supply and Return, external to the engine; which is pretty cool! Great update video. I'm glad you're spending the GoFundMe money!
Great stuff going on here. Thanks for the update! With all the other suggestions going on here, I was wondering if you thought about machining cooking fins onto the oil pan you're talking about
G'day Don, Yay Team ! You're doing very well indeed, mate. Still sounding a bit croaky, but on the mend, nonetheless. I had a complicated and demanding sort of a repair myself last week, after discovering that my little Electric Chook-Chaser is more like an Aeroplane than I thought...; after I neglected to tie it to the Ground, and being under a tight-pegged Tarpaulin, a Wind-Gust blew it off the Kick-Stand and threw it against the Trunk of one of two rows of Teatrees between which it is habitually parked (this past year...). I had to reattach 3 Mounting Flanges onto the cast-aluminium "Tuning-fork shaped Bracket onto which the Headlight and Front Blinker Stalks are mounted. 5 Anastomoses, using Materials to hand...(Selleys 5-minute Epoxy, 2-Ply Nylon Kite-String, a Sharpie (to black the Kite-String - because all the broken bits were Black), some Plastic Bond to tack tue Stalks together prior to drilling and sewing across the join with Kite-String. And...,my big "clever decision" was to pre-check each Clamp-setup before mixing enough Epoxy for only ONE Anastomosis..., then mixing and applying the Glue ; and then going away to drink Coffee for an hour, to let the Setup go off, Undisturbed, to better prevent disturbing the alignment and/or dropping the unattached Fragment into the dirt - while trying to rush on to the next step... Then, I served all the Joints with Kite-String, before encasing the Servings with Epoxy - and later on again I sanded the Epoxy, singed off any fluffed-up "Hairy bits", and then hand-painted my work with Mat Black (Rattlecan Spraypaint, squirted into a Plastic Cup - returned to a Liquid suitable for brushing. Don, I’ve been telling you, you need a Haigh Locking tailwheel. Google that. It’s what they used on Pitts style biplanes. You can build one, and it’ll be lighter and better that that heavy POS..
The opening in the tail is too narrow for the steering arms to clear. Even if they would clear, you still run into a problem when the wheel is retracted, and you use the rudder, the wheel will flop around in the tail.
Really enjoying the airplane content. Truly educational for us nonmechanical viewers. One suggestion, most of us don't care about your hot water heater, your car brakes or your cold. Don - With your proposed plate and tank system, are you certain oil will transfer to the tank fast enough (especially at high RPM) to prevent the pump from starving? Thanks for the update and Happy Thanksgiving!
Hey Don question for you on the cowl did you make a plug to make a fibber glass cowl. Im a giant scale rc corsair flyer just wanted to no if you had to make a plug then mold the plug to lay up a cowl. I like to share with you my 120" corsair i had to make a cowl mold an a canopy well i was going to share a pic with you buy it wont let me up load a pic to you.
I fit ain't broken, don't fix it! Plugging stuff up, adding this or that to the innards is just asking for a crash!!! It works! you have already had one close call, why the hell test fate! This is the reason why alot of people don't use automotive engines that much. It's too risky. Cheaper, but to risky
Hey Guy...I have no way of knowing what your level of experience is with engines of any kind but the one thing that's universal I learned long ago was that valve covers oil pans transmission pans any kind of "Pan" or "Valve cover" are all held down with small 1/4 ratchet tools & sockets .and barely require enough effort you couldn't accomplish it was a Nut driver and a twist of your wrist . So begs the question how could anyone break a bolt off in the "oil pan rail" with one hand an a 1/4 inch Ratchet ? And why are you reinventing the wheel ?
Thanks for the update!
Lots being done, lots to be considered. The good thing is, they’ve got the right man on the job!
Thanks for the update have a great thanksgiving God bless you.
Hope you feel better soon. Plane looking good.
I feel fine, just getting the remnants out of the lungs takes the longest.
You need a chest mount for that cam ;) Great updates Don!
Then I can't point it under the plane and look up.
Great to see the progress your making… keep it up and have a great Thanksgiving… looking forward to the next video!
Thanks, Don for the update. Great idea on the oil pan. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!!

Right now, the crankcase vent is a closed system. Just like it was in the car. I'm most likely going to keep the oil tank lower than the engine.

Not sure about around you but our local Ace Hardware has individual helicoils, last I checked.
I needed the whole kit, tap and insert tool.

Looking good Don! So about that tail wheel. Does the new one with the arms fit in the tail or do they have to be removed regardless for clearance?

If the tank is below the engine, and the drain hole is large enough, then yes it should. They used to sell these set ups, so they must have worked.
next step is install the rotary gun
