  • The Smittybilt Overlander XL. It is no secret that the Smittybilt Overlander XL is one of our favorite tents. The reason why is simple. The Smittybilt Overlander XL is one of the best tents you can get dollar per dollar. The Smittybilt Overlander XL has a relatively simple, light weight and reliable design that can accommodate you and your family. For $1500.00 dollars you get a really large tent that is easy to set up and break down. The Smittybilt comes with a lot of great extras, a telescopic ladder, power cables, a shoe bag, stakes, guy cables, a very comfortable mattress and the list goes on. The Smittybilt Overlander XL also provides spectacular views of the environment and still protects you from the elements. To put it simple it is the best all around tent on the market. It isn’t the fastest to set up, the prettiest, or lightest tent on the market. However, it is the best tent you can get at an amazing price. Once you sleep in a Smittybilt Overlander XL everything else is a downgrade.

    Coming up on 2 years since you posted this, but I have just become an owner of one of these tents. And I was considering selling it to get something smaller... but maybe I won't? You definitely sell this one very well! A couple of points: 100% back you up on the lack of instructions. Yes, they do have instructions, but they don't cover everything, especially some of the little extras. That rod you had across the top inside? According to the instructions I have, that's part of the awning over the ladder, but now I gotta try what you did with it. That looked like a handy tool if you need to hang something up. Thanks for your review! Oh, and I'm out here in the west (Utah) and trust me, maybe not the humidity, but there's plenty of other stuff to get things dirty. I appreciate your comments about the annex. Glad I found your video!

      Glad you found the video helpful. We thought about selling our Smittybilt at one point but we are glad we didn’t. It still checks all the boxes for us and since our family had grown we definitely need the space. The roofnest we had and similar designs are great options as well. You can’t beat the simplicity and ruggedness. They are so quick to set up and tear down if you only need a tent for 2 people or less.

    Hi KRT Family. We've been on the fence with SmittyBilt, TuffStuff and iKamper. I think you sold us on this one. We're excited to get back into camping in the USA after 16 years overseas. We Jeep camped a bunch in South Korea and we're getting ready to do the same here now that we're home. Cheers guys. ~Mike and Ester~ in South Carolina.

      Awesome! Thank you! Yeah the Smittybilt is the best balance of features we wanted in a tent. For us it fit just right. iKamper did just release a new tent that addressed all the issues we had but… It’s iKamper. This tent isn’t the fastest or the prettiest but it is the best price, form and function of all the tents we have tried.

    I have been going back and forth for almost 6 months on different tents but I always seem to come back the the smittybilt built tent. I have seen all you other videos and this one for sure confirms that I'm going to get the smittybilt gen 2. Thank you guys.

      Thanks for sharing! Yeah we came around full circle back to the Smittybilt because after all is said and done, it fits our needs more so than anything else on the market. Trying the other designs was good for us and eye opening. If I was solo camping and needed to load things on the tent I would definitely go fo the Roofnest Falcon or similar design but for our needs SMITTYBILT ALL day!

    Wow!! At first when you guys were saying it’s the best or what not, I said to myself they must not have had anything outside of smitty. Then you showed you’ve had a couple others! It’s easy for someone to say well how can it be better than an ikamper. Well as far as value to price ratio it totally makes sense. Some premium tents are like $3500 bucks!!! I’m looking into getting this RTT. I just have to upgrade my rack unfortunately so that’s another $1000 bucks so a $3k tent is definitely not in the budget. Even thou I have already pretty much made up my mind I still like watching the reviews for it. Great video guys!!!

    Excellent video! I appreciate you taking your time to touch on important points that are not found in the instruction manual. I am strongly considering the Smittybilt GEN2 Overlander XL. I also looked at the Yakima Skyrise HD, but the size of the Smittybilt, along with some additional features I read about it will help me make an informed decision. My only challenge now is getting my wife onboard...Thank you for your nice video.

    I really appreciated this video, along with the others that walk people through your RTT journey. It's interesting that you moved back to a softshell tent after having a hardshell.
    I have had a 23Zero RTT, similar to your Smittybuild, for well over a year. It has been very roomy and comfortable but I've been craving the fast setup and takedown of a hardshell. No clue yet where we'll land.

    • @KRTLyfe
      @KRTLyfe  2 роки тому +1

      Glad you enjoyed it! Yeah we tried those other tents for faster set up time and for us the trade off wasn’t worth it. We had the best experience with the Falcon XL it was very easy to use but not the most practical for a family of three. For us the iKamper was a hard no. The iKamper was not as easy or fast to set up and put away as the company suggests. For us after trying various models and designs…and price points. The Smittybilt Overlander is the best for us.

    Great choice definitely. I have the same tent and love it. Fits my family of 5 just right (Without having to use an annex!) I only have 3 complaints which I am going to manually try and resolve myself.
    1. The velcro strap/tie downs on the outside of the shell... need some better quick release/quick tighten straps... Those things SUCK in the cold... and I mean wake up and pack up the tent and its 25 degrees out... trying to get your fingers to cooperate with pulling on them.. miserable. I am going to remove those and add some type of quick pull ratchet setup.
    2. The 3 piece verdana extension... This should stay attached... so annoying setting it up and tearing it down. Especially if it rains and it is wet. I am looking at getting some boat joint connectors to pull a pin and have it fold down/stay attached.
    3. This one... going to be a little ways out and require some money and real fab work... Aluminum hardshell. Going to have one fabbed up that slides out the rear to double as an awning over my rear lift gate. (I have a 2nd gen toyota sequoia -- see my youtube page)
    Those minor tweaks will make setup and tear down so much quicker. I can typically set it up solo opening all windows and setting up the verdana in about 10ish minutes.

    Hello KRT,
    I have a couple of questions: How long does it take to put up and how long does it take to take down. Also, how hard is it to remove from the vehicle, or do you have to leave it on your vehicle all the time?
    Thanks and congrats for your great video.

    • @KRTLyfe
      @KRTLyfe  2 роки тому +3

      If we are in a rush we can set it up in about 10 minutes or so breaking it down is about the same. Unlike the Falcon XL that literally takes a few seconds this tent requires more work but when you get inside it I’d definitely worth the extra effort. Removal and installation from the vehicle is exactly the same as everything else on the market. It is a pain in the behind for every tent. The Smittybilt is on the lighter side so my wife and I can handle it if necessary. The Falcon and the iKamper on the other hand, I would always have to call my brothers for extra help.

  • @ScottAcy

    Does it let alot of light in? I see some brands market that thiers stay dark inside when the sun is up. You know, incase it was a late night...

    • @KRTLyfe
      @KRTLyfe  Рік тому +1

      You can get it pretty dark but it does let light in. I would look at other brands if you want a serious black out tent during the day. The iKamper we had was very dark inside even on a bright day.

    I have the fitted sheet on my XL. Not worth the money, we have washed it about 6 times from weekend trips and it’s already wearing thin areas. We are sticking with king size sheets and MyPillow topper ( it’s awesome). We’re in Colorado at 9000+ feet and regularly camp above 11,000 ft elevation We love out tent.
