  • THE ROOFNEST FALCON XL is a hard shell aluminum roof top tent.
    IT IS THE BEST ROOF TOP TENT we have tried to date however, no one is perfect.
    In this review we go over the pros and cons you should be aware of that come with this and many other Roof Top camping systems.
    We have tried some of the most affordable RTT designs such as the Smittybilt Overlander XL (love it)
    And some of the most expensive iKamper Skycamp 2.0 (hate it).
    The RoofNest Falcon XL just barely sits in between those price points.
    That begs the question… Is the Roofnest Falcon XL just right?

    The side windows are designed that way to let the user decide how much of it to leave open for air flow, if it opened from the bottom you couldn’t leave any size gap for air flow as gravity would keep the flaps down at all times.
    As for the ladder, I recommend not putting up the ladder up until you’re ready to go to bed at night, which means you can put it at the rear of the vehicle since you’ll be in bed and won’t need to open the rear lift gate, since you’ll be in bed. :)
    I hope this makes sense. Nice tent enjoy it, I got the condor XL, and I am very happy with it.

      Thanks for watching commenting and subscribing! So with the side flaps many manufacturers overcome gravity two ways. Some have adjustable loops you can use to change the amount of openness you want the window to remain at, the other way is with a rain fly rod just like the rain fly on the back of this tent. If you look at the design of the GFC super light the sides open from the bottom and all the way out. IMHO it is a superb design.
      Using the ladder on the back of a 100 series LC or any vehicle with a lifting rear hatch is an issue for a multitude of reasons but I will skip all of that. The main reason why you can not is because for the ladder to safely attach to the tent the tent has to be as far back on the vehicle as it can go to create a over hang for the ladder to clear the vehicle. The problem with doing this is you wont be able to open the rear hatch which completely defeats the point of having a rear hatch. There are a plethora of other reasons why this solution isn’t feasible but yeah.

      @@KRTLyfe good point. Didn’t think of the rear gate and the requirement to set the tent far back.

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I'm still on the fence as to getting a RTT. I've used one similar to your Smittybilt in the past and agree 100% that it is a total pain to set-up and take down but having the luxury of that space and the coverage provided by the annex is awesome once you go through the hassle. Your Roofnest seems like a great compromise, though what I hate the most is the climbing up and down. If I did this type of camping/overlanding often, to my mind, the best compromise would be midsized pickup with a lightweight topper and pop-up tent/sleeping platform (something like the Go Fast Camper). You can develop a really functional set-up that includes sleeping, kitchen, storage yet not overly compromised as a daily driver. Everything has it's trade-offs, will probably just keep with a ground tent for now.

      I agree with you 💯 everything has its trade offs. I am really interested in hammock tents as well. I have one that I have yet to try. I’m thinking it can be a good secondary option. I also tried sleeping inside the LC (ours has a sleeping platform). This is my favorite option but once again there are more trade offs to consider. At the end of the day I have to do what ever makes the wife happy LOL!

      @@KRTLyfe I'm curious what you mean by hammock tent? The type that you have to string between two trees/posts that have an integrated fly and bug netting? I've hiked with backpackers that used them, it was a lot more effort to find the ideal campsite and get set up. It also was difficult when raining as gear had to be covered separately, there was no place to easily change muddy clothes or just "hang out" like you could in a tent. That said, those who love hammocks are happy to live with these drawbacks and I imagine most could be solved having a vehicle nearby. And heck yes to keeping your partner happy! I think you are both lucky that you can enjoy the outdoors in this way. My wife and I have been on many backpacking trips but as we are getting older it's getting harder to get motived to live for days carrying all your gear and few creature comforts on your back. Hence the interest in overlanding!

    • @KRTLyfe
      @KRTLyfe  3 роки тому +1

      Yep yep, one of my friends is into the Hammock thing. There are many obstacles tho you are 100 percent correct. For instance on a few occasions he had to hang the hammock between vehicles because there weren’t any trees…or the area wouldn’t allow people to tie off to trees. So it is definitely a trade off.

    Super cute video, glad it's been working out for your family. You got me on the Smittybilt comparison and sizes. I'm only one guy with my pooch.... the size might be important sometimes either way, a lot of camping friends have family and I end up sleeping outside anyway. The Smittybilt is interesting to me also...

    Maybe it just my setup. I watch UA-cam via my TV. Not in this video but in a lot of others I have to constantly adjust the volume. The soundtrack add ins are very loud and when you guys are farther away from the camera you’re very low. Just an FYI and maybe it’s just me, but I don’t have this watching tons of other YT content.

      On a lot of our older content the levels are definitely all over the place! We didn’t really know what we were doing lol and we filmed on multiple devices the editing software wasn’t the best etc etc. Finally got it down to a science when I started using LumaFusion. It also makes a huge difference depending on the device you are using. I noticed on our old videos if you watch it on a really nice stereo the audio is horribly unbalanced vs if you are using a iPhone or IPad. Thank you very much for watching commenting and subscribing. We sincerely appreciate the support and input.

    Not a huge deal but I think you can open the rear door if you move your tent few inches to the back.
    Can I take the ladder in to the tent if I'm afraid of something creeping up, or idiot stealing the ladder? Lol.

    • @KRTLyfe
      @KRTLyfe  3 роки тому

      Yeah we tried repositioning the tent many times, due to the design the tent has to have a slight over hang for the ladder to clear the body of the vehicle. You could definitely bring your ladder inside if you are camping solo. Thanks for watching commenting and subscribing.

    Hi
    There is a part of your video where your RTT is mounted on your luxury car(Porsche 911),nice. Im actually looking for roof rack with cross for my 2017 hodan accord sedan. Most of the well known names for the roof rack does not recommend their racks because of the weight limitations. Where and what is the name brand of the roof rack used on your porsche? Well appreciated for your response.

    Excellent review! I just got one question! What’s the actual clean total height from the surface of the crossbar to the surface of the falcon(including the connection part between tent and crossbar)? I checked website it say 7” but in the spec says 6.5”. That’s really important for me cause 7 wouldn’t fit my garage then….

      These manufacturers all copy each other just FYI, but I digress. We are not fans of that design for so many reasons that I could go on for days… This I can tell you for sure, the condor is no where near as easy to set up as the Falcon.
