Final Edit: It's definitely Conor Dunne. He rode the Giro in 2019, is really tall, skinny, and just retired ("fresh from the pro peloton") and I remember from somewhere that he was announced as a new GCN presenter for 2020. All of the reasons that I thought it was Lloyd fit Dunne, and he doesn't have any arguments against him like dark arm hair. Edit: Wait, could it be Tom Last? He has light hair and freckles on his arms. He never started the Giro, and isn't as tall, but maybe he's the guy on the bike and the other stuff is just misdirection. Edit #2- It's not Tom Last, looking at old videos shows that he has a birthmark or something on his left arm that the mystery rider doesn't have. I thought the mystery rider was Dan Lloyd, but I'm not so sure. Here is evidence in favor of it being Dan: 1. The mystery rider has skinny arms, so it's probably not Hank or Opie. The GCN presenters with skinny arms are Ollie (but it's clearly not him), Si, and Dan. 2. The mystery rider says "it's easier than riding the Giro." Dan has ridden the Giro, and I think he's the only GCN presenter to have done so. 3. He's wearing white Fizik shoes with two Boa dials. This instagram picture shows that Dan has similar shoes: instagram.com/p/BrQ2oOBj-Dm/ 4. The mystery rider is tall. Dan is also tall. Here is evidence that it's not Dan: 5. The Sufferfest video from 2019 (ua-cam.com/video/YvemLgLpO3c/v-deo.html) makes me think that Dan probably can't hold 440W for 46 minutes. But maybe that's a power number that he did as a pro, and that's why he seems to have been "faking" the ride in the videl. 6. The same video from point 5 shows that Dan's arm hair is darker than the mystery rider. 7. Ollie says that the rider is "fresh from the pro peloton" and Dan retired several years ago. But again, maybe these are old numbers from Dan's pro career, and would explain why he was "faking" in the video. 8. The mystery rider is fairly vascular. I don't think I've seen Dan looking quite like that. Here is one thing that might solve the mystery- the rider has a few freckles on their arms. From the video in point 5 we can see that Dan has freckles on his arms, but they might not be in the same places. The mystery rider might not even be a GCN presenter, but if that's the case then we'll probably never figure it out, there are just too many possibilities. And the shoes are pretty common, I think most of the GCN presenters have those shoes.
What do you mean with "the rider has a few freckles on their arms"? Theres just one rider with freckles, it should be "the rider has a few freckles on his arms".

That pro rider looks like perhaps it's Mr. Hematocrit (Mr. H) who smashed some impressive kom's on UA-cam a few years back.
As a puny weed of a cyclist this is well beyond my ability in terms of power. 200w for an hour is my lot, no matter how hard I train ... It's relative for lots of riders, choose your discipline and achieve more. My flat A road tt speed is crappy, hilly tt speed considering my age is ok and cyclocross isn't bad , need to lose a stone to be really competitive. This applies to all of us, enjoy what you do and try to find your strong discipline before you get too old to win ☺️
Nice work Oli ! I decided to take the challenge too. After a short warmup, I dialed up the Smart Trainer to 440 watts. I lasted a whooping 1:07 mins. (67 sec). Not bad for a 73 year old cyclist, been cycling for 50+ years. Now, that office worker needs to start pounding some peddles, and not a keyboard. KB
I'm pretty sure GCN presenter kits are custom fitted, so I think Ollie has lost some weight recently. Less weight, more skinny, more aerodynamic for the hour attempt?
When Paula Radcliffe had to stop to drop some unwelcome "Klingons" in the London Marathon I wondered how long it would take her to drop me. A few friends and I tried working it out and it was just stunning. I was a George like; 80 to 150m at her pace (there was some debate but let's say my, not too shabby, 100m sprint is her pace). Our best athlete, a 10k International and commonwealth runner would have been dropped somewhere before 14 miles. Same conclusion, pros are very, very different, Born and made. I suspect that as well as being fit, well planned, focussed and competitive that they have the constitution of a Tiger Tank and a "clyde built" immune system. At 65, I'm way over the hill now but what remains is the joy of "knocking my pan in". It really doesn't do to compare yourself to others. We all end up with a tussle aginst ourselves and Old father time. But that remains a delight.
The reveal on Si was great - knew it had to be him the second we saw those biceps... or... the place where most people have biceps. (Si, you're still my favorite presenter, even if you're barely on camera anymore... well, one of my favorites... top ten for sure.)
Isn’t the point to try to find more of those athletes that are born and get them into the elite levels of sport so that we can enjoy their achievements. I wasn’t discouraged. Good on George for giving it a go. That’s elite sportsmanship.
It's amazing and unbelievable. I never imagined how much difference between a beginner, advanced and professional. I think at the beginning of the clip that the professional will not exceed a quarter of an hour, but shock, he exceeded 45 minutes and I think he can provide more. Thank you for this wonderful content. Your follower from Iraq
Once you go over your FTP, things go south quickly in any sport. But yes, its crazy how much higher FTP pros have. But in reality this just means that the pro is "just" 2-3x faster than the beginner and not 60 times.
Conor Dunne over 2 meters height and nearly 90 kilos of BW gives him a good chance to do 440 for that duration, average 70 kilos pro would be struggleto do 20 minute test at 440w
You hit the nail on the head with "The worlds best athletes are born, not made" I know the Pros work their butts off to get where they are but for most of us common folk, those wattage numbers for an hour are ridiculous! Kudos to Pro Cyclists. That's why we love to watch you race.
I love these videos from GCN and oliver B. is becoming an excellent presenter. is an excellent presenter or simply a natural presenter.......There must be some weird chemistry going on here (no pun intended) but on a serious note us mere mortals can only dream of putting out these levels of power and this film demonstrates it very well. Good on Ya GCN
He could do it, but he's quite a lot heavier I think. This test didn't account for that, it should have been W/kg, wiggins was a twig, and the overweight guy in the beginning would have had to push maybe 30% more power for the same work/weight ratio.
barebare I weigh 71 kg and my FTP is 284 watts. That’s exactly 4 watts per kilo. Take Mathieu Van Der Poel for example. He weighs 73 kg and it’s estimated by a few guru’s that his FTP is about 445 watts. That’s 6.1 watts a kilo. If I were to push that power to weight ratio, I would only survive for about three or four minutes before collapsing in pain. Now that is what I call an impressive man!
Victor Campenaerts (Lotto-Soudal) successfully set a new UCI Hour Record at the Velodromo Bicentenario in Aguascalientes, Mexico on Tuesday evening (April 16). The Belgian set a distance of 55.089km in his hour, beating the 54.526km record of Bradley Wiggins set in 2015 in London by 563 metres.
The difference between my 5 min power of 420W and 1 hour power is 120W (300W for 1 hour). The difference between me unfit and peak shape during a year (never training very seriously, but still) is 290 to 330W or about 40W. I think these numbers would be quite normal for a somewhat trained amateur. For me to add another 100W to that is quite unimmaginable, but the sad part is, I'm about 200 punds, which means I'm not only lacking 100W, but I would also need to loose maybe 30 pounds to even be in the pro peloton. Its just a whole other level reserved for the 0.01% of humans with right training over years.
Someone gave you a dislike for not mentioning then one hour world record holder, I don't see what that has to do with this video so I gave you a like. I really can't stand folks asking for likes and subs, but you did it so nicely I did not find it offensive at all.

Honestly feel this video belittles the amount of serious hard work over decades, heart, belief, desire and sacrifice that goes into making a pro cyclist (or any top level athlete) perform at the level that they do. Genetics will have a part to play but we shouldn’t disregard the fact these guys push their body to the limit to chase what they believe in - every single day. Also, unhealthy mentality for an amateur to tell themselves ‘some are just born with it’ - this is false and benefits nobody. Focusing on the self-belief, sacrifice and mental grit that pros have should be what this channel celebrates and encourages. Not diminishing their achievements to make amateurs satisfied with their own mediocre performances.
I don't think this video was trying to belittle or diminish the achievements of world-class pros. It's how you interpreted it, but one could also say that this video was trying to encourage people not to put themselves down for being unable to perform at a professional level. This does not imply belittling the hard work pros put in. However, at the end of the day, it is *undeniable* that some athletes are born with an advantage. There are going to be people who train just as hard, but will never be able to match a pro's performance, even if they trained the rest of their life. I think it's definitely useful and interesting to discuss those physiological differences.
"Most famous holder of the hour record Bradley Wiggins". But surely the most relevant holder is the *CURRENT HOLDER* , who happens to be someone else than Wiggins, Victor Campenaerts!!!
@@renearrieta5204Cycling on the Aguascalientes velodrome in Mexico is like "doping". Due to placement of that object conditions playing on favour of cardio disciplines (like cycling for example). there is plenty of info about it take a read...
@@JanKowalski-pe9lo not like doping, but certainly a confounding factor - because different riders adapt differently to performance at altitude. You could say the same about being able to tailor your bike specifically to optimize your power-to-drag potential since everyone's body is different and their "best" position on the bike is going to take some work to figure out. You produce more power at sea level because of the higher oxygen partial pressure- and you also produce more power sitting further up instead of scrunched in the aero position. But you probably go slower than the optimal in both cases. And to be fair - Wiggins could have chosen to do his hour record at a different velodrome, and if I remember correctly his choice of venue was mostly commercial. And the day he chose had suboptimal pressure conditions as well. But he still put a scorcher of a time and I don't think any hour record testers are keen to try again soon - Graeme Obree excepted!
Everyone has different physiology and capacity, so for myself at only 160cm and about 52kg (when we've not just had Xmas lol) I stand absolutely no chance and can barely do a minute!! But then that's nearly 8.5 w/kg for me, so taking w/kg into account would make my comparable target around 310w which is still a good percentage higher than my best ever FTP of about 275w, so basically still well beyond reach!! Probably even more relevant would be watts in relation to how much aerodynamic drag you experience, which in my case means I'd need even more power!!
I heard a few great quotes on genetics... 'No; have you seen his hands compared to mine?' - Bruce Lee, when asked if he could beat Ali in a fight (this was around 1965). 'I wish I was an Olympian, but my body was weak.' - Socrates 'A phenomenon like Mozart remains an inexplicable thing.' - Goethe
@@dsdf_fdp1858 46mins power is very close to 60min power, the helmet and wig and less cooling available from riding on the track probably cost him time. But yes, power on a TT bike would be even harder
When I was 12, I stole a bike from one of my father's clients because he used to beat me severely, and I had had enough. I decided to run away to my grandmother's house in another city. I ran 62 kilometers in 3 hours with no training, and I was only 12 years old. I had never been in any competition, but I believe I may have good genetics for this. Even now, at 37 years old, my bike is 60 years old, covered in rust, and without clips, I can still beat many fit people.
I just read his book, Shut Up Legs, and he mentions some figures around page 212: for hour record (50.5km approx) he has to hold 412 watts, and pedal at 102 rpm. He's on 55-14, with 177.5mm cranks. According to gear calculator, assuming 622mm wheel circumference, you would travel 52.27 km in one hour. But there's other factors. He does not mention training wattage in the book but 600 W for 20 mins could be possible for someone like Jens Voigt. That wattage would take him to the point of failure I reckon.

Do not forget Big Mig, was capable of holding 510 W for an hour, when he beated the hour record. On the other hand not all pro cyclist can hold 440 Watts even for 45'. For example, for a 60Kg pro (such Valverde), it would mean 7,3W/Kg. Almost impossible.
Top athletes are born; not made. I agree with you, George! One example that comes to mind is sprinters, they are born with the speed which they can build from to be faster. But you can't work on being fast. Either you are born fast or you are not.. Solid work George!!
Great video. But I wouldn’t be so discouraging for athletes for becoming pro. I’ve seen people with average athletic abilities go very far by committing themselves to their sport.
Genetics plays such an enormous part in determining your entire life. I feel like everyone should watch a video like this; there is no amount of practice that can bridge the cap between a normal person and the top .001% of people who become professional atheletes.

Love your work, and I concur 🧐😄
You didn’t need to do all this research. Ollie reveals who it is at 8:44.
What do you mean with "the rider has a few freckles on their arms"? Theres just one rider with freckles, it should be "the rider has a few freckles on his arms".

No, born + made.
Being born a pro is necessary but not sufficient.
Damn, so pros have more midichlorians in their body, imagine with the right Yoda training, they can become Jedi's!
beginner, amateur, pro … Jedi. Sounds about right.
Is it me or is gcn producing a lot of great content recently? 3:50 minutes at 440 watts is pretty good in my opinion. It'd be the edge of my power profile I think, and I've been riding quite a bit.

KB
nice work!
Thanks, my legs felt like rubber, too, afterwards.
My recpect. That is insanly good for 73 years.
I managed to sustain 440 watts for 4:50 minutes once, it was a painful transcendent experience to say the least.
Yeah, I've done that, but I'm a big guy with big legs, no doubt I'd need a bit more to try the hour record.
This is the single most depressing segment you’ve ever produced. Cheers for that.

Ya and Ollie is become more of a wanker with each passing episode.
this actually makes me want to go get on my kickr and see how long i can hold 440 now, so it is a bit motivating, for me at least.

George's wig is mind-boggling.
Ollie's definitely get the physique of a real cyclist. He's wearing lycra and the sleeves are baggy.
I'm pretty sure GCN presenter kits are custom fitted, so I think Ollie has lost some weight recently. Less weight, more skinny, more aerodynamic for the hour attempt?
I'd watch with interest if George was trained up over a period of time by The Sufferfest, that could be the next series

The only way I could hold 440 watts for an hour It would have to be using lightbulbs and then I would struggle
I like how he tapped the seat, said nothing and walked out. I can only imagine what he was thinking??? Hahaha.
I can say with some confidence that I could go for 10 seconds
That's What My Gf Says Too
It's amazing and unbelievable.
Also it's more difficult to put out 440w in a relatively extreme time trial position used for the record
Does he have a distinctively Dan Lloyd looking neckbeard? Because or anonymous pro did.
You hit the nail on the head with "The worlds best athletes are born, not made" I know the Pros work their butts off to get where they are but for most of us common folk, those wattage numbers for an hour are ridiculous! Kudos to Pro Cyclists. That's why we love to watch you race.
No you spoiled the video. Shut up😢😢😢
The secret pro. Some say he is Si’s Euro pro cousin, all we know is he isn’t called the Stig!
George did a pretty impressive shoe change whilst doing 440 watts there.
Socks too?
Given the lack of sweat from CycleStig, does that mean it's Prince Andrew? And well done to George
Andrew as rode many hairy bikes in his time!
A genetic disposition towards asthma can help power output as well :D
Everyone has asthma at 440 watts
I would love to see how long MvDP can hold this power...
You saw the swift comercial to?
Norman Zielke
Probably almost an hour. He held 278 watts for 6 hours...
That'll be a long video
He could do it, but he's quite a lot heavier I think. This test didn't account for that, it should have been W/kg, wiggins was a twig, and the overweight guy in the beginning would have had to push maybe 30% more power for the same work/weight ratio.
barebare
I weigh 71 kg and my FTP is 284 watts.
Great video. One thing that would have been nice would have been to have power to weight ratios for comparisons.
Yes he did, but he did a lower average power because he is more aero
As far as I know the hour record is about speed and not about the power output..
The stress load is not linear, they aren’t like 15 times better, once you hit a higher average ftp, the sustain of 400 becomes much easier

Emma possibly was not close to this wattage. She was very strong in Watts per kilogram, hence her being a very very strong climber.
@@harris6735 correct. I'm a 55kg woman who races at a national level (no where near Emma's level obviously) and would struggle to hold 440W for a couple of minutes. That would be 8w/kg for me and even more for Emma who I imagine weighs less than 50kg.

Interesting comparing it to running - I’m sure that I could hold 440W for longer than I could hold world record marathon running pace though

Dries Quirynen one day on cervelo test team...
I thought so too, initially, but I don't think Dan Lloyd is as veiny as this guy.
Dries Quirynen I agree, those have to be Dan’s knobby knees rofl 🤣
Considering the skinny legs - yes. But can he really hold 440 Watt for such a long time?
Xtra999 I don’t think so as his FTP back on his ten week suffer fest training it was only a little over 300, if he did I’m calling WADA and calling it EPO doping or he snuck his e-bike in rofl.
I hope “The Stig” makes many more appearances on the show!
Seriously. It was both instructive and funny!
Who is he?
Over 40 mins at over 400 watts and not a drop of sweat? I think not.
I guess they off camera the real attempt, that just for cover. Even the cadence looks quite slow
Those ankles are a giveaway! 😜
Great video concept man. Thanks for this.
Now I'm tempted to set my turbo trainer at home for 440 Watts and see how long I can go! I can do 505 Watts for a minute. What would that mean for 440 Watts? Two minutes? Three... maybe? I guess that's pretty good for 45 years old.
Give it a go Jason
I'm similar. 46 years old and can hold 568W for a minute, 351W for 5 minutes. It makes me think I'd last about 2 minutes at 440W.
@@marcusthornton2844 I am also 46 and quite regularly do a 3min test on a Wattbike. My best over the years has been 425w, I am not that fit at the moment and can only do about 350w currently.

The end message was the most discouraging thing I’ve heard in a long time.
As Victor beat the hour record at altitude, he was producing a much lower wattage than Wiggins' sea level attempt.
@@gcn I didn't realise this. Thanks for the response.
@@gcn Why? because of the atmosphere's density???
Wow 46min thats a serious effort. Well done Simon.
Probably even more relevant would be watts in relation to how much aerodynamic drag you experience, which in my case means I'd need even more power!!
per KG is irrelevant, it's not a hill climb.
I heard a few great quotes on genetics...
'No; have you seen his hands compared to mine?' - Bruce Lee, when asked if he could beat Ali in a fight (this was around 1965).
'I wish I was an Olympian, but my body was weak.' - Socrates
'A phenomenon like Mozart remains an inexplicable thing.' - Goethe
Holding power on the stationary is a very different story to Wiggins in the TT position
And it's a bit easier for the video to do it in a room vs a dome
Erg mode is also different from out of the road.
@@dsdf_fdp1858 46mins power is very close to 60min power, the helmet and wig and less cooling available from riding on the track probably cost him time.
But yes, power on a TT bike would be even harder
Yep. Power output on a TT bike is lower than on a road bike for the same effort. Makes 440 even more impressive.

He’s Dunne! 🤔
Nobody:

I remember Jens Voigt saying that he held over 600 watts for 20 minutes when training for his hour record.
Matt Sezer impossibile
I just read his book, Shut Up Legs, and he mentions some figures around page 212: for hour record (50.5km approx) he has to hold 412 watts, and pedal at 102 rpm. He's on 55-14, with 177.5mm cranks. According to gear calculator, assuming 622mm wheel circumference, you would travel 52.27 km in one hour. But there's other factors. He does not mention training wattage in the book but 600 W for 20 mins could be possible for someone like Jens Voigt. That wattage would take him to the point of failure I reckon.
