    OK so it’s like kind of a common misconception that “philosophers dont exist today” but like they literally do. Philosophers in the past did the same exact thing, they sat with each other, and would come up with ideas and new thoughts and broaden their ideas. They were thinkers and they’d reference philosophers before them. philosophers arent dead and ppl need to stop thinking that modern day philosophers are like less than or not as smart. I can go on a whole tangeant abt this misconception because it genuinely bothers me so much. Philosophy is also ever changing and there’s no absolute to anything, there is no wrong nor right. And i think philosophy is like the art of conversation, understanding and listening. hope i make sense

    47:00 the most powerful tool in democracy is the education system. I still cannot fathom why i never got taught psychology/philosophy in highschool. I do an economics study, and have to do this on the side because i recognize it’s significance. The only way you can change people as a government is through the education system. I do believe there is a metric to a meaningful life but you have to first accept that there is a problem then ask what type (it is nature)the why followed by the how to fix it.From this is where i think growth stems from.

    In terms of interior design of the space a desk or table separating both could make these very deep topics a bit easier to talk about and a bit less awkward in terms of needing to turn to eachother to speak when especially in philosophical discussion, it feels less conversational and rather adding to a cloud of concepts. That or a room with a round face and or indirect seating like therapist offices/rooms. The seating is “facing” eachother but not directly so as to not force focus or eye contact on the person. The chairs are not directly facing eachother. which can be quite confronting and uncomfortable especially with no “defense” such as a table.

    At around 40:00 mins on the topic of not seeing people as guilty or not guilty but rather looking at their factors and how they came to do that crime and essentially how much blame can be put on them. I feel like Olivia's view of it was wayyy too idealistic. I get why she wants what she does but it just doesn't work practically. e.g. How much responsibility does the guy who beats his wife because that's how his dad treated his mum and his sister have when it comes to his crimes. You could argue, not much. He didn't choose the family he was born into and how it scarred his mind and relationship with women. However, that doesn't mean that if he doesn't receive punishment because it 'wasn't his fault' that he won't just turn around and beat the next woman he's with. That's why risk to society is more feasible if you want to move away from the guilty/not guilty system because it doesn't really matter if you stole something because you come from a bad neighborhood and that's the culture there (to simplify circumstances) or you stole something just because you felt like it. The point is still that you stole something, and you have a greater risk of doing it again. Don't get me wrong, we should by all means have more empathy for people whose unfortunate uncontrollable circumstances have pushed them towards crime but that should be separate of the legal process since both people caused the same negative impact and have the same risk of doing it again. You should of course consider the reasons behind the crime and stop them in producing more future criminals on the large legislative scale not in a courthouse in individual present cases.

    • @fromgoing
      @fromgoing 7 місяців тому

      I think I agree with your viewpoint on criminal culpability in the legal system.
      To me, the legal punishment of criminal behavior isn't a mere manifestation of blame or hatred; it's more to avoid an outcome or outcomes. As you said, if an entity is willing to do x (domestic abuse, murder, etc.), philosophy temporally falls to the wayside, and criminal act needs to be prevented. And so, a rational, civilized society should put systems and mechanisms in place - without a sense of hatred or blame for someone's environmental variables, but precisely because we don't want this outcome.
      As you mentioned, there is value in considering those environmental variables. That thought and nuance could be placed outside the legal system and in rehabilitation programs, mental health services, community support, public awareness and education, etc.
      Heck, maybe even legal reforms could be effective, such as shifting the focus from drug addiction incarceration toward rehabilitation or reintegration.
      There are strategies where the environmental nuance can benefit the individual and society, but I agree that in the end, there needs to be some prevention of outcome; we must have a deliberate and nuanced understanding of the legal system and the undercurrents of one's environment.

    As someone who hasn’t spoken to my dad for just over 2 years, i think, on the topic of punishment and prison sentencing, one overlooked tool in law is the sanction.
    The sanction is used as a tool to combat the sovereignty of states, and make punishment possible inside the sovereignty of states principle. But i also recognize the sovereignty of the individual. For moderate cases, a form of sanction would more suffice, if the villain does not pose a direct threat to its surroundings. It can be used more easily and can be satisfying to both parties. A 3 year isolation for example makes the villain know and push to improve himself, or not. Simultaneously, you can offer them guidance when they do want to improve themselves. Prison sentencing is this binary switch right now, and just like nukes, it is used more as a deterrent (extrinisic motivation) than a tool to improve the individual. However, realistically in the US, the problem is the government. What bullshit people get convicted for, de facto skin colour being a punnishable offense, i am less keen that incremental change suffice. Here in NL i am still convinced however of the democratic project, but the US is looking 30 years down the line like Brazil is today.

    • @mauritsbol4806
      @mauritsbol4806 7 місяців тому

      Alternatively, the reverse sanction, the term contract is also under utilized. Think in marriage, we also seek this definitive nature. While i recognize relationships need time to invest and mature, indefinite relationships seem unhealthy. It is like signing a football player for life. Why can’t a employee do it, but your spouse can? Term limits, and extensions of contracts, can make it infinitely long, but instead of a assumption, it automatically becomes a expectation as it will now require negotiation and diplomacy

    Heidegger is critizied as elitist; but he thought that authenticity is difficult for Dasein. Inauthenticity is the common mode of Being.
    Authenticity isn't only part of your subjectivity. Sartre said that when you imagine choosing, you're choosing for humanity. Your choices are universalized; becoming a serial killer isn't an authentic choice because it can't be universalized. It's contradictory and self-defeating.

      @@alejandro.alejandro maybe lol. For me its knowing that everything is so pointless anyway. But because there is no meaning in the world, I get the freedom to come up with my own or not even have a purpose. Then live as is. Thats the optimistic part.

      @alejandro.alejandro it's similar but not exactly Absurdism, Absurdism is more the revolt against the absurdity of the universe and live life the way you want to while accepting it's absurdities but not denying them.

      @@JarOfTorbenI could be wrong, but isn't optimistic nihilism just the same? Knowing that life is meaningless, but still living fully (a sort of revolt). What I mean to say is that your definition of Absurdism could be used to define optimistic nihilism as well, so doesn't it make them both same?
