Thank you very much for your cruise reviews, specifically for the Discovery Princess. WOW. The information you've provided over the multiple videos has been outstanding and so incredibly helpful to a first-time cruise searcher. There are so many to choose from but this one to Alaska on Discovery is really standing out in the crowd of options for us. Cheers!
Strongly prefer self-serve. I’ve also thought gloves would be a great idea. Been to Alfredo’s on Regal Princess. Absolutely loved their margherita pizza. They even ran elsewhere to find sausage. Agree the buffet layout is at best convoluted, but we enjoyed most everything. Looking forward to sailing Coral Princess in December, Australia / New Zealand.
We have had 9 cruises with Princess. We have tried 2 other lines and Princess is still #1 for us. We have an upcoming cruise on the Discovery in November 2023. Before Covid I had thought of bringing gloves for the buffet. I am still wondering about doing that. We liked the Pizza place on the Royal and would be more than happy to try GiGi's. I love a good calzone. We had boarding day lunch on the Royal there and will probably do it again on the Discovery. I like your presentation of the food video. Thanks for sharing!!
I agree that the buffet was better when it wasn’t self-serve. I’m not sure I would wear disposable gloves but I do carry hand sanitizer with me and use it before eating.
Price update. Sabatini’s is $35 & Crown Grill is $39. Your comment on the tablecloth is accurate. Funny you brought this up. On the Grand Princess, we had a lady very upset at Sabatini’s due to no tablecloths. I feel this is still an excellent value. We have always thoroughly enjoyed both specialty restaurants. Heading out on Discovery in April, hoping the weather improves. Thank you both for the helpful honest feedback and information provided.
Thank you for your video. We will be cruising on the Discovery in November and I am glad to hear your comments on the dining options. We will have a standard balcony, so no breakfast there for us! The Salty Dog sounds great and the Bistro Sur La Mer will be a venue to try. Thank you.
It’s funny how pre-Covid you would never think of wearing disposable gloves at a buffet. I live in Ontario Canada and there is a box store chain that is available. I think across Canada. It is called Bulbourne, it is a very nice store to shop and there are large 2 cups scoops on top of every bin. During Covid, this store had instituted plastic, disposable gloves and hand sanitizer before you got to all the bins. So you could spray the hand sanitizer on your hands and let them dry. Then the plastic disposal gloves on your hands. You still use the middle scoops and all the bins But then at least your bare hands weren’t touching the scoops. Thinking about going on a future cruise and I wish all the cruise lines still had crew that would scoop out your food at the buffet. I used to love buffets, but haven’t visited one since Covid struck.
Totally agree the Crown Grill is a must on every Princess cruise. The rib eye is our usual choice but we are going to try that beef chop next time , and the new salted caramel cheesecake dessert was delicious on our last cruise!
This is a great review about the food I will definitely take this into consideration! Definitely want to try the Crown Grill, husband would like gastropub and I always love the chef's tables carnival and royal. Our 1st princess and Alaskan Cruise, also booked a mini-suite a bathtub and separate shower since I enjoy taking my bath every night and in your review I saw how small the bathroom was and that just was not going to work for me. My husband is a big man, so I really appreciate the honest reviews and opinions wow 135 + cruises you guys are amazing! Enjoy life, La Dolce Vita. Next we want to try Viking🎉
You gave me a great idea to bring some disposable gloves for using the utensils in the Buffett to get my food on the plate there so in case others have used the utensils before me
I love Sabatini's, and we're going on the Majestic in 3 days' time for a month circumnavigating Australia. You broke my heart when you said there's no Sabatini on the Majestic. We usually go to the dining room for breakfast and dinner any other time. We ask to be seated with others as it's nice having conversations. We also enjoy the international Cafe. Oh well, I'm sure the cruise will be great even without my favourite restaurant.
No napkins or salt and pepper would make me want to jump overboard. Nice to see the honest plus/minus food takes and not just glazing over food fails like most reviews -
We just sailed Discovery Princess last week. We avoided the buffet and main dining rooms like the plague. We did specialty dining every night. I agree that Crown Grill rocked. Sabatinis was awful and I agree completely that the food was bland. However, the Sabatinis staff were outstanding!!! Mariana and Tatijana we're amazing! We had breakfast with these ladies every morning and absolutely loved them. Unfortunately we dined once at Bistro Ser LA Mer and not one of us can remember what we had to eat there! Totally forgettable waste of money and time. We did get to experience 360! Absolutely amazing! Hands down beats the Chef's Table!! Definitely try 360! Thanks for the great dining review!
Wow. You missed GIGI"s. This pizza and calzone is made to order and the best. Every day me and my wife had to have Gigis. I would change it up all the time. More cheese, less cheese, xtra sauce, red onion. The crust is out of this world. My wife liked it vegi style. The minestrone is the best. Always piping hot. The service is incredible.
Chris! Firstly, I love all your videos. Secondly, you totally missed out when you didn’t eat at Gigi’s. For being a buffet item, I thought it was exceptionally tasty. Next time you’re on the Discovery, make sure you hit Gigi’s 😋 [Edit] I have to agree with you about Crown Grill. On the Discovery, I had the Porterhouse and it was perfection. I also had the same scallop dish you had, and I devoured it. Compared with NCL’s Cagney’s Steakhouse, I would say Crown was just a little bit better. I just love your “play-by-play” format on these videos. I get really into it! 😅

You mentioned the brat, but I didn't see it on the Salty Dog Grill Menu. However, I completely agree re the pizza. I am originally from NY and prefer similar pizza. The Slice Grill has come the closest, by far, to NYC pizza.
I would subscribe if you had more Princess reviews, as I really like your straight forward, no frills reviews. As far as I can see, you only have a balcony review and a food review for Discovery, but no other Princess ships. As to the food review I agree with much of what you have said. Our 10 day Alaska cruise on board Majestic Princess only presented 2 noteworthy meals. The Grown Grill and Harmony. Agreed with you regarding the hamburgers. Very bland meat.
For the past 15 years or so, we take hand disinfectant spray on every cruise. Hand rails, elevator buttons, and many other locations can possibly be contamination locations (no, we're not germaphobes, but have become ill previously on a cruise) Even with hand washing/sanitizing stations at the buffet, folks simply walk past them. Be safe and healthy
My wife and I are non-drinkers. We find that most specials like the Ultimate Balcony Breakfast include some alcoholic drink. If you stay in a certain level suite, they give you a bottle of champagne. Drink packages are typically only a good value for drinkers. Do any cruise lines take into account that not all passengers drink but most reports I have seen is that more people are drinking less or not at all. Are their any special deals for non-drinkers?
I will be on Discovery Princess in May of 2025. I cannot wait to lay waste to the food supply onboard :-) I had been a Royal Caribbean customer but their food quality leaves a lot to be desired. Everything I've seen about the food on the Discovery Princess tells me I should be very happy with my decision to change companies. I cannot wait to try the gelato and the premium desserts.
@@Thokko Maybe but probably 75% of people on my last Princess cruise did not wash or sanitize their hands before entering the buffet. So in a cruise buffet line, wearing gloves is many times more sanitary than no gloves.
Great job! I just subscribed. Your 139 cruises is 5 times as many as I've had but I feel compelled to risk some advice.... 1. You mentioned no Surf & Turf available for the Gala dinner but the menu had Lobster and Beef Wellington (wrapped Filet Mignon). You are allowed to order as many entrees as you like and could have had your Surf & Turf. Why would Princess create a special menu item consisting of two items when some people only want one and those who want both can order both. I see that as an advantage, not a complaint. 2. Nothing compares to Guy's burgers so no use comparing other cruise line burgers to it. It is a different league. 3. The biggest complaint for any cruise line dining is typically, "bland, lacks spices". Cruise lines intentionally leave spices (salt and pepper) out of food because of health reasons etc. That is why Princess always offers fresh ground pepper and puts saltshakers on the table. If you have bland food on a cruise, all you need to do is add salt and pepper. Try it. 4. I never consider Princess as a Premium cruise line. Often the cruise fare is the cheapest around. I assume their food is better than some other lines because they don't spend money on climbing walls and ice-skating rinks. Keep up the good work!
If it's a formal night, you ought to wear a dark suit and, at _minimum_, a necktie; though, preferrably, a bowtie. Don't be one of those tacky rubes who wears a t-shirt to dinner. Show you respect your fellow passengers enough to do your part to up the atmosphere they're dining in, as well.

@@hidavidhuang This will be my first cruise with Princess. It sounds like it's really gone downhill. 😠 Oh well it's still probably better than being at home. 🤷🏼♀
I literally got off the discovery princess earlier today. You are right about the hamburger patties being flavorless. Also slice is by far better than Gigi's Pizzeria. The pizza at Gigi's literally had no cheese or toppings. The so-called ice cream at swirls was more like ice milk and that is being generous. No real "cream" pretty sure. And also the prices have went up from this video for the coffee. Also the desserts we're not that great especially the cookies were just dry hockey pucks. Whoever was making those should just maybe read a recipe book. I don't know how Subway makes a cookie 10 times better than this cruise ship
As a vegetarian, I eat like a king on Discovery and it is one of my favorite ships. The food is fine for me on most venues and Princess does an outstanding job with dietary restrictions or choices like mine. The embarkation night Ramen bowl is not to be missed. Thanks for this food tour!!
I'm also a vegetarian as well as a celiac... We are booking a cruise on this ship but I'm a bit worried about food options. Do you happen to recall by chance there being gluten free options in any of the dining areas please? I realize when one isn't gluten free it's not something that might be noticed but I thought I'd ask anyway. This is our first cruise so I'm feeling a little nervous. Cheers.
The Priemer Package seems like a major ripp off; two upgraded meals for the entire cruise included! The reviews on the restaurant food makes the package seem useless as well.
I like the idea of gloves but dont like the idea of more single use plastic,, perhaps some kind of washable gloves ? giving people their own serving spoons (that would never work) or just use individual plates like a lot of cruise ships have done,, you take a plate of food instead of using a spoon ,, not sure what the solutinon is
“We just don’t like grabbing utensils that 500 other people have handled” I’m pretty sure anybody other than yourself is the barrier for acceptable protocol you’re referring to 😂
Went to the Crown Grill on the Discovery Princess last month. The service was super slow, and the presentation of the food was very weak compared to the steak houses on Carnival. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone sailing on the Discovery Princess.
Sorry, But beef short ribs was the best this ship had to offer? I would be offended to thing that I paid for food, of all the food available, Lobster, Prime rib, and so many others. To say Beef Short ribs was the best thing available is an embarrassing statement for Princess. May as well say Mac and cheese is a delicacy, and the best food available. Can you say garbage?
The 1st minute of your video that you liked spicy foods.. maybe that's why everything seamed bland. So many others night want to add their own seasonings. After all seasonings foods is you can add but bit take away.. sorta like trying to put tooth paste back into its tube.. also your video seams like you didn't really like the ship... I couldn't watch to the end because of all the negatives

@@cyrene7784 Not true. The Lobster is still free. If you want a second lobster, you pay $10. That is half what Royal charges for the second lobster.
@@allent1034 yep I know that now 😊
I literally got off the discovery princess earlier today.
Cheers.
@@DaveStroble where do you get the ramen bowl?
Great idea..... bring your own gloves
The Priemer Package seems like a major ripp off; two upgraded meals for the entire cruise included! The reviews on the restaurant food makes the package seem useless as well.
I would wear the gloves. The buffet was very messy.
I like the idea of gloves but dont like the idea of more single use plastic,, perhaps some kind of washable gloves ? giving people their own serving spoons (that would never work) or just use individual plates like a lot of cruise ships have done,, you take a plate of food instead of using a spoon ,, not sure what the solutinon is
The solution is to have the crew serve the food like they do on Holland America.
“We just don’t like grabbing utensils that 500 other people have handled” I’m pretty sure anybody other than yourself is the barrier for acceptable protocol you’re referring to 😂
you kind of look like the mafia boss from one of thosenetflix movies lol
Thank you (I think).
I would not wear gloves
I would like to say I would wear the gloves, but realistically, nope, would not wear the gloves.
Went to the Crown Grill on the Discovery Princess last month. The service was super slow, and the presentation of the food was very weak compared to the steak houses on Carnival. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone sailing on the Discovery Princess.
Plastic bags please yes
The chefs table would be a waste on us. Both vegetarian. 🥑
@@missahollis6537 I am afraid so.
I’m kind of surprised that professional cruise reviewers would be so squeamish about eating at the buffet.
That’s exactly why we are squeamish.
Be happy that you are able to cruise and quit complaining..The people on the ship work there butts off to give you the best service they can.
I am sorry that you interpreted the content in this video as "complaining".
How is giving opinions to help others "complaining"? The large amount of thumbs up on this review proves that you are all alone in your opinion.
Did we watch the same video? What complaining?
I couldn't watch to the end because of all the negatives
i would NOT use the gloves - much less prefer the covid-1984 protocols - because it WOULD encourge covid-1984 FEAR AND KARENS.
No I wouldn't and I prefer to serve myself at a buffet but if you are so worried about germs then carry your own gloves or cook at home.
Thank you, i will bring my own package of g.oves
