So, I literally just booked our first cruise, and it's on Discovery Princess to AK in 2023. Thank you for this great, HONEST review of the Standard Balcony stateroom, as this is what we have booked.

Hello chris. We just got back from Alaska sailing The Majestic Princess in a club class stateroom. The air-conditioner never did work right. Luckily we had cool weather and often left the balcony door opened. We had the same issue with our balcony door as well. Our stateroom had a recessed ceiling that made noise continuously, all night long while underway. We asked if there was a way to shut off the motion sensor light in the closet as it was way to bright for a late night visit to the bathroom. Luckily I was able to rig a temporary fix to avoid this issue. We never had any bowl of fruit in our cabin in the club. Our room did not have umbrellas. The Medallion app only worked about 50% of the time and the menus for the restaurants never worked on the TV or the app. Only one hook on the wall and no soft close drawers / cabinets. Found that surprising for a upgraded stateroom. Nothing that will stop us from sailing with Princess in the future.

Great information. We had booked over a year in advance to sailing this same Princess ship, only going to the Mexican Rivera. I assume that because the ship was fully loaded with guests and we booked as far out as we did, we received an upgrade to a Deluxe Balcony from the standard. The balcony was the same space, but we got a Love seat couch with maybe an additional couple of feet room length. Everything else was exactly the same as you showed. No adjoining room door.

135 cruises is an amazing milestone - so impressive!
These rooms are lovely (I also go into one on Discovery Princess a few weeks ago), but I did find it would be annoying to not have somewhere to lounge other than the bed. Princess are one of the only lines I've seen where a 'standard balcony' doesn't have a sofa/armchair!

We generally book the standard balcony staterooms. Princess generally maintains the same appearance of their staterooms. So you’re description was perfect. Closet space can varies, based on the age of the vessel. We had some with half of the length of hanging space.
As for the shower drape, I agree it’s a hit and miss as for the blocking of the over spray from the shower. Hanging for us is using the 50lb magnet pull for most of our hanging needs.
We found the power on all princess ships seem to focus by the desk only. So a Cpath user would have issues…. Really never thought about that need!
USB, well that’s a real hit and miss on princess we mostly rude the older ships. Never had usb. The Grand had them (1 port only).on the table light.
I don’t know if you noticed, but they have a very bright night light that motion sensitive by the night stand, we ended up covering them to not to get woke up. And the small closet area they are using a motion controlled light that is both super bright when you go to the bathroom at 2am. And the light will only remain on got 30 seconds while you look around you need to wave your arm to keep it operating. Thought that was a crappy device (new addition on ruby princess)
But thanks for the review… was well done!

The thing to remember about cabins and noise is that when the ship is built each cabin is dropped in like a container on a container ship. So each cabin has two walls between you and the folks next door - the walls of the two cabins. When the connecting door is installed you lose that insulation.

Will be sailing on Discovery Princess in a week from now. Thank you for your insight on this cabin. This is exactly the same cabin I booked. Not looking forward to the shower curtains.

Hi! Stayed in a full suite on Regal, in early September in the Mediterranean. Umbrellas were provided. Have stayed many times in a mini suite and don’t ever remember umbrellas being there.

just got back from a 7 day mexican riviera cruise on discovery. lovely new ship with great food and entertainment, but I can't stress enough that the balcony stateroom was SMALL! I was a solo traveler, and it was great for JUST ME, but i don't see how 2 people can survive in that room. Also, there was no card room and people had to play their games in restaurants and bars - and there was no library and no books to read. i guess they just assume that we all have books on our tablets, but that just isn't true for many of us older passengers. As you mentioned, the elevators were quite slow - and i only used them to go from decks 5,6,7, to deck 16. I thought the food was really great - with the exception being the bistro sur la mer....just bland and awful. GiGi's was a great surprise! I also wish there was a steam room or sauna in the locker rooms of the fitness center - but the only ones were for extra money in the spa. All in all, a wonderful ship and vacation!

Additionally, I would like to report that the service on board was phenomenal. On every level at every location the crew were amazing. The steak I had at the Crown Grill was probably the 2nd best I've had at sea. The lobster tail my wife had was THE BEST she has ever had anywhere. The Prince Alaska iternary was the best available and every shore excursion was a 10 out of 10.

We will be taking our first cruise on Discovery Princess in June 2023. We’re American, so what would you recommend for us to increase the number of electrical outlets on the desk? Would a six outlet strip work, or a 3/4 outlet tap work. I’m not sure what’s permitted for us to pack.
Thank you for your informative videos!

    • @CruiseReport
      @CruiseReport  Рік тому

I would avoid traditional power strips as they can cause electrical issues on cruise ships. I have a new video that addresses some gear we recommend to deal with needing more outlets. ua-cam.com/video/3xNp4Dv_YNQ/v-deo.html

Now the chef's table is $130.00 a person. I just booked it for my birthday! The other pay restaurants are 35 per person I'm not sure about the Gastropub. Just thought I would let you know since you were telling people to give info.

Wait..what? No pillow chocolates? Shower curtains? The new Carnival ship has glass shower doors and Princess is supposed to be a step above Carnival as they are owned by the same company. Maybe they mixed up the bathrooms? Lol

We cruised on the Regal & Enchanted Princess and thought the standard balcony cabins were the worst ( by far ) cabins we ever stayed in...when my wife & I walked into the first Regal cabin with our carry ons & bags, , our first thoughts were: "where's the rest of the cabin?"...my wife said.."where do we put our things?"..I thought, "where do we eat?"..I actually went down to Guest Services to see if maybe we were assigned the wrong cabin, lol..the agent there checked and said, "no, you're in the right cabin"...I asked "where's the sofa couch?"..he said, "standard balcony cabins on Princess don't have a couch..you must upgrade to the deluxe balcony cabin"...I thought, "you have to pay extra for a couch?" ..in 40+ cruises, this was the first time we've never had a couch in our cabin on 7 cruise lines.."where do we eat?"... a lady said, "you don't eat in those cabins"...wow! I guess room service or bringing back some food was out of the question..then we booked one time a deluxe balcony and that had a loveseat ( not a full sofa..)..that was a bit better, but I could NOT lie down on it- too small..at least there was a place to put our things, and eat..and YES, I hate curtained showers..I shave in the shower and made a mess every time..ALL other cruise ships had a glass enclosed shower..I'm soooo glad the Sun Princess ( which we just cruised on mid October and LOVED the Sun!!) was 100% better than the Royal class cabins- AND a 6 ft couch....Finally Princess has gotten into the 21st century!!..You should not have to pay $$ for a couch or have to upgrade to a mini suite to be comfortable in your cabin IMO....
