My first attempt working the International Space Station Ham Radio Repeater.
Radios used were: Baofeng BF-F8HP and

You need a long broom handle that you can plant in the ground like a spear then just pivot it.
You didn’t have the leverage or strength to keep it pointed where you wanted it.

Congratulations! Pretty cool to get Doug, K8DP, as your first QSO. I met him at the AMSAT booth at Ham-vention. I recommend turning off your squelch on the rx radio.
Thank you. I turned the squelch off on the TX radio at first and was all backwards. I hope to be a little more prepared and calmer the next experiment.

Congratulations. I made my first satellite QSO a few weeks ago.
Congratulations to you as well! Everything was happening so fast... I really want to find a better location to operate, up high on hill or mountain. I need to do some better planning and testing. The 5-15mins pass is really a rush! I hope to get a bit more comfortable and organized.

I was using 2 radios because I didn't have a duplexer. One radio is for transmitting on 2m, and the other radio is for RX on 70cm. That way, you can hear yourself transmitting through the satellite or ISS. I hope to make a how-to video in the future on it. Is this a home made antenna? Are there instructions on how to make one myself?
Not that one, but you can make on with an old measuring tape and pvc pipe. I'm using an Arrow Antenna www.arrowantennas.com/arrowii/146-437.html

How far can you hear and transmit for emergencies?
There are too many variables to give you an honest answer.
@@W6IWN_Radio In a desert with a BF-F8hp, would getting an extended or survival Antanea work to reach a repeater 25-50 miles?
@hector5749 I reach our local repeater 50+ miles away in the woods with a signal stick antenna. So yes, it can be done.
