Every music lover has that one good song or album that's ruined by a shitty time or person. For Misha Mansoor and Jake Bowen of prog metal superheroes Periphery, the music they create may not be ruined for them, but there's absolutely no chance that they'll ever enjoy listening to it.
Manoor and Bownen pontificate on the idea of loss in relation to listening to music in this APTV exclusive and resolve that music may not be the best solution to dealing with your own problems.

Periphery did ruin music for me, I can't listen to any other band.
yeah, still wondering how long it'll take 'till I'm obsessed with something other than Hail Stan lol
same! thankfully my wife loves their music too because I play their stuff daily in the house, in the car, wherever. never get tired of it.
I feel u sooo much guys
Damn same not listening any other song after p4 comes out
Glad that I'm not alone. HAIL STAN. Hahaha
Periphery 5: This Time It’s Ruined
Pants edition!
Misha: “All my good friends, like all my real friends”
Jake: “The hell am I to you?”
Another way to ruin a song is to make it your alarm! Lol
I learned this the hard way :/
Ohioisonfire- of mice and men
If I could like this comment more times, I'd do it.
Yep i know that pain all to well with a few stone sour songs
Four lights at 4am hit different and not in a good way
Specially in Mexico city and those sleeping are Catholics
That's super disappointing to hear that they're not planning on playing Priestess ever again. That song was one of the most unique tracks from Juggernaut.
HAIL STAN!!!
1:26 holy shit that relates hard, started listening to "Racecar" during issues in my relationship, and was my favorite song at the time, after everything ended, it's kinda hard to look at it the same as I did before, even though it's an amazing song and I love it a lot.
That’s happening to me rn, that song was my comfort song during hard times and favorite song of all time, and it’s slowly slipping away from me
The title annoys me, it should be "Periphery's ruined music".
Periphery didin't ruin any music, quite the opposite. So the title is either a click-bait or a spelling error.
Hail Stan!
couldn’t agree more. the title is straight up stupid
they do this for every single episode of this segment lol
They name it like this on purpose
It's a joke title for this series
It's a fucking segment they do. They did the same thing for "August Burns Red". See "August Burns Red Ruined Music"
Ruined Music: Periphery - THAT is the title
but muh clickbait
Yeah
Funny how I've never heard of you.
Mr. Manoor and Mr. Bownen 😎
Mr. Manure 😂
I'm glad I clicked to see the single reply lol
That’s too bad Priestess is one of my favourite Periphery songs
Same here bro
I literally thought they meant peripherys technical music and ability ruined standard music for everyone
If that was the case, Meshuggah beat them to the punch
@@dan_the_pathmaster7934 Animals as Leaders

@@tombetty5137 yeah and BB King lmao
You want real good composers and musicians? Go look into Dream Theater, Symphony X, classical music and so incredibly much more.
Hearing why priestess got pulled really bums me out. I had been looking forward to hearing it live knowing it was on the set list that tour and then they didn’t play it. At the time it was one of my favorite Periphery songs.
THAT song, is fuckin great. i can totally understand dood.
great video, we usually never hear band members talk about stuff like this!
Juny1spion Thanks!! We have a whole bunch of Ruined Music segments-a full playlist of them!! We’d love for you to check the rest of them out!
What music has been ruined for you?
@@altpress wow I did not know that, now I see it! I'll make sure to check out more of them
In my case, the music doesn't get ruined by giving them such connections, even though they might be depressing. I think it's alright (and maybe even healthy) to listen to them sometimes, look back into the past and let the emotions pour. That's the beauty of music IMO :)
My Last Serenade was the last time a band I'd never heard before destroyed me the way Reptile by Periphery did. Incredible stuff, boys.
O shit I’m setting myself up to hate the fuck out of periphery. Introduced my current gf to them and it’s practically all we listen to. Went to their show, going to their headliner (if it happens)... I better marry this one.
I've been listening to the Bulb tracks from soundcloud since maybe 2007 or 2008. The music of this band and band members has been with me through all the good and the bad of the past decade and when I go back and listen to the tracks it's like looking through a mental photo album or something for me. I don't know why but bad experiences never ruined music for me. It gave beauty to an otherwise bad situation, or made the good situation that much more memorable.
real shit, glad im not the only guy whos had bitches ruin music for me
That laugh Misha does at Jakey on 2:34 is the broist thing ive heard in a while and its perfect lol.
Edit: That being said Absolomb was lowkey ruined for me for a while cause of a shit break up and a month vacay with Mr. Jägermeister so cheers to that fellas, HAIL STAN P.·. 😂👌
Manoor and Bownen is the best typo I've seen
Was listening to Deftones a lot and for the first time near the end of last year while I was talking to this girl and after that went south I can still listen to Deftones but now that memory will always be embedded in there. RIP Rosemary lol :(
AustinJSchaeffer :(
Luckily I got into Deftones after all my disastrous relationships so they will never get ruined. Rosemary is probably my favorite song BTW.
It’s ironic cause satellites is ruined cause my girl broke up with me
Louie Sposato Nooooooooo I’m so sorry dude
That’s sad you guys don’t enjoy your music. I enjoy going back and listening to things I recorded in the past, but I feel you. At the time by the time we finished I was sick of hearing most of them.
Lol i dont enjoy my bands music. Its just how it is
NOOOOOO! I love Priestess!
Lune was actually ruined for me for a while and I hated that. Also because of a relationship thing. So glad I got over that
Yeah, me and my ex-fiancée listened to a lot of Incubus, and the song “Kiss to send us off” got ruined big time...! The lyrics say “meet me here on November 11th”, and she actually dumped me on November 11th! So, for obvious reasons I couldn’t listen to that song for a loooong time!
That's brutal man, love incubus.
Well shit.
I just opened my Hail Satan T-Shirt and CD while watching this... And just realized it's spelled wrong on THOSE TOO!!! 😩
Alden Legge They meant for it to be spelled that way
😂😂😂😂 #HailStan
@@coin_01 you must be fun at parties,
Stan Lee
Okay, SOMEONE’S GOTTA REMEMBER TO PUT SOMETHING BETWEEN “Ruined” AND THE BAND NAME
I ruined playing guitar and production for myself - I used to be quite hardcore with mixing musicianship with substances, isolation, and hopes + dreams of making a career out of it. I believe in exposure therapy, so I am trying to break down those walls, however, when I play, I get flashbacks of nostalgia where I was not the same person that I am today and it can make me quite anxious or down. I am trying to look at it all from a new perspective as it was such a big part of my life.
Periphery V brought me back to the Home studio once more after 5 years of hiatus from touching an instrument.
Make it your ringtone!
You have no idea how much a person can possibly hate their favorite song.
Actually here’s another crazy REOCCURRING one in my life that is also relevant each time. The first time I was in the back of a cop car watching them wheel my fiancé out in a body bag after the suicide and Don’t Fear the Reaper comes on the radio like it was supposed to or something. I thought of it as an interesting coincidence but nothing more.
Anyway I still liked that cowbell scene with Christopher Walken on SNL so I saw it was on Netflix or something one day (this was back in 2012) and played it while my current fiancé was on the way to work. I then had a friend show up a couple hours later unannounced like walked right into my house saying there was an accident and I needed to go with him. It turns out just up the street 3 minutes after leaving the house the SUV rolled, ejected my fiancé through the windshield at 65 mph and was then crushed by the SUV as it continued to roll. (Before I get anything further, I say “current” cuz they survived so don’t freak out). But there was severe skull, facial, and some brain damage, shattered pelvis in 5 places, broken sternum, morel lesions of the thighs (if you’re really curious look it up. I won’t subject anyone here to a description of what that is cuz it’s making me physically nauseated NOW, 7 years later).
2 weeks in a coma, 7 months in a hospital, 5 months in rehab. Then I had to help them relearn to walk, well not “had”. I wanted to. I never once thought of abandoning this person during all of this even though they don’t look or act the same...some for the better some for the worst so I see balance and I’m content.
Anyway. No more Don’t Fear the Reaper. I believe I even heard it the day my dog died. I’ve since punch 4 people in the face for refusing to turn the song off when I asked. You play that shit in my presence...I’m gonna fuckin beat you unconscious.
I truly believe, for me anyway, the song is cursed.
Sköll Devours this is very sad, I’m sorry for your losses brother. Stay strong and fuck “Don’t Fear the Reaper”
coming from the band that has said on multiple occasions"we write music for ourselves" and to only listen to it one time when it get released????? my band sucks and i still listen to us sometimes
Josef Mark I would infer that they wrote the music for themselves as a cathartic and artistic outlet, but once it’s recorded and looked at critically for the sole purpose of looking for flaws, they can’t really listen to it in the same way. That’s common among artists-a lot of musicians don’t listen to their own music.
Thanks for watching!
Lol they don't literally write music to listen to themselves lmao they meant more like they write the music based on how they feel the music should be, not based on how a record company tells them how to write it.
Looking at you Sumerian Records.
sumerian never had control or influence over periphery’s actual writing stop spreading this fucking bullshit
That guy in the right who doesnt listen to periphery will never be succesful, how cant you appreciate such an amazing band?
yea he’s a dumbass nobody who probably posted shitty covers of periphery songs from 2011
I clicked on this video ready to fight whoever thought that Periphery ruined music
Crying session with jake and misha
I wish they knew that the reason people stand and gawk awkwardly when they play the songs that aren't exactly crowd favorites is equal parts "we don't know how to react to this one" and "this is fucking amazing, bewildering, new. This isn't the one I picked first on the album and I immediately regret not giving it more immediate credibility"
There's also something about seeing this band live that's simultaneously "oh, this is that song" and "is this that song? Yeah, it is, but they're here, doing it in person"
Two dudes talking about relationships and stuff! I am having flashbacks now! I guess sometimes you get life lesson in a harshest way that it really takes long time to get over it.
Eventually you do know better.
It seems jake is still suffering from that toxic relationship.
1:20 I was the same way with Breaking Benjamin's Dear Agony album. It is indeed a very great album, but, when I had my first breakup, I gravitated to that album. So much so that I cried myself to sleep the night of (bare in mind that his happened in late 2016, 7 years after that album's release). 8 years later, and I can't associate it with anything else, but that dark time I went through.
Clickbaitey title for sure, but also a great interview. Can't believe poor Jake had every Opeth album up to Deliverance ruined for a while. There is so much great music in those albums.
More like Periphery restored the music industry.
Lune got ruined for me. Used to my fav song until my ex told me she didn't love me the whole 11 months of our relationship.
They're totally right !
For me "Lonely Day" from SOAD had been ruined more than 15 years ago, when I was listening to it during a family trip, right when my cousin choose to throw up everywhere on everyone in the car.
Now everytime I hear it, i can still feel that disgusting pain and smell. 😑
They do well in front of cameras.
I clicked on this bc i thought they were going to argue that periphery ruined music somehow lolol
Jake just woke up
When you're going through something rough, you can listen to Buckethead. It always heals
I had some similar experiences, the album that you guys would call ruined is Controller from Misery Signals. Really dark time of my life listening to that, but it had the opposite effect. I love that album to pieces.
Nothing but respect for these guys. They didn't ruin music. Music had ruined them.
Same thing happened to me when my grandpa passed with cemetery gates by Pantera.
omg what a loss, also your grandpa!
I hate when life events change how you feel like that. I was going through a rough time in 2012 and 2013 so because of that I had trouble going back to Silent Machine by Twelve Foot Ninja and Monolith of Inhumanity by Cattle Decapitation for awhile but I got over it after awhile but sometimes I do think some of the passion I had for those albums is lost due to that time in my life.
In regards to the KSE bit, I offer some bit of ADTR lyrics: "YOU RUINED MY FAVORITE RECORDS/LISTEN TO THEM AND I THINK OF YOU!"
Periphery V: We ruin asses
15 years?? I've got a long way to go then, damn it .
Can't listen to Kickstart My Heart after my grandma flipped her 'vette.
Misha, that's the song that got me back into metal.
Great band. Great song.
I’m mad I went to one of those shows expecting to see priestess, one of my favorite Periphery songs. That was one of the shows where they had pulled it.
Finger Eleven - Paralyzer.
Long story short I ate some amanita mushrooms, fell asleep, woke up in hell with that song playing(it was my alarm), and was mentally scarred to the point where hearing the song would make me feel like I was reliving dying. Doesn't effect me like that anymore, but I still won't go out of my way to listen to it.
Holy clicbait fucking headline
Inhale Stan
Exhale Stan
I got really pissed off by thr title but aight u had us in the first half ngl
AP, can you fix the typos in the video description?
I love The Reign of Kindo and I used to listen to them every morning before work. Big fucking mistake because now when I listen I think of work and get depressed. Rip.
How funny. The album that got me through my last breakup was Juggernaut: Alpha and Omega
That is a super misleading title. Maybe use quotes? Something to distinguish the fact that they are talking about ruined music for them and not the fact that you think they as a band ruined music...
Devin Phares I farted when I saw Michael Jackson
It's sad that Priestess got a bad reaction. Those ballad type songs are my favorite!
The PE games you will find on this site are used by professional physical education teachers as part of successful programs in elementary gyms.
I'm still waiting for them to play erised live
Only question is, who will attempt to do the Petrucci solo.
I was so triggered by the title then I realised-
"don't listen music when someone does something terrible" thanks for advice.. 😁😁😁
The clean part from garden in the bones got ruined for me. Girlfriend and I broke up that time
I find it funny they say music is ruined by a significant other. I laid heavy on P3 which had just dropped during a bad breakup for me. Admittedly Lune and Absolomb are hard to hear now.
Sorry guys, good album heh.
wholesome misha
4:07 Kind of the lick? 🤔
More videos with the guys. Please!
Lucas Medrias They also did our REGRAM segment! It’ll be up in a few weeks! Thanks for watching!!!
@@altpress I can't wait!!!! Thanks for this. Also, you could interview bands like tesseract, sikth, after the burial, veil of maya. :)
I'm glad I'm not the only person who can't stop listening to these f#&@ers they get me thru the shittiest days lune and flatline still hit me in that soft spot in my chest
When my girlfriend broke up with me, I listened to alot of Periphery and I still do everyday because f*** her, I'm gonna enjoy the music I like whether she's with me or not
@@MoSco5000 Damn straight, if I let what happened to Misha happen to me, Marigold would be ruined for 15 years and that is unacceptable lmao
Bulb = Tavarish
i had almost the same situation like Misha with ''my last serenade''.
The difference is that the girl was going to throw me for another guy, besides I knew him. LOL
And there it is, It's Satan.
No music ever gets ruined for me, which is weird.
But seriously, why dont you guys play All New Materials live?
jbulletc because the Katy Perry mash up is so much better
Manoor and Bownen lmao
All new materials got ruined for me for a similar reason 😔
Yeah when you have a heartbreak dont listen to music. This guys are right
Or listen to healthy music when your down:D
Lol Misha is the first one to figure out that their album name is spelled wrong😂😂😂. Fucking Christ
This is so relatable...
This title is clickbaitttttttt
Just call the series "What Ruined Music?" - [band members, of band name]
HAIL STAN! 🔥
mmm love the smell of clickbait in the morning
winsuper1 no that’s just the name of the series “X band ruined music” they’ve got dozens of these videos
@@nomeru_0 so they have a series of clickbait videos
winsuper1 click bait is saying something in the title that doesn’t happen in the video, they are talking about music that is ruined for them. It’s not meant to be taken seriously it’s just a funny title lighten the fuck up
This isn't me saying this, it's science
Well, I’m glad I got to see them perform Priestess. It’s one of my favorite tracks of theirs. Too bad shit audiences ruined it for everyone.
But for real if yall play reptile live I would lose my shit.
Did you lose it yet?
15 years ? I've had 15 girlfriends so I'll be missing them till the end 😂
What reaction were they expecting from playing Priestess? It's kind of a somber song.
Are they so cocky that they think their own music sounds better?
Peripher-emo
This is why I don't date girls who like metal.
Smoek beer n hail stan!!1!
Liked the video, but the title can be misleading
3:32 same dude, never enjoyed Periphery either...
JK lol. I like a bunch of their stuff
