The adjustable gas tube is an interesting take I don't hear often. I always hear from folks to just "tune" the platform via the buffer spring/weights to optimize. Also, I like your philosophy on the extended/flared magwells. I have a similar philosophy as to why I have one one my "duty setup".
I left out buffers and buffer weights due to length. I like hydraulic buffers which many will cringe when they read this. But paired with tunable gas tube...amazing
Jeff, thanks for the video. Maybe you could do videos on recommended recoil springs, buffer weights, and barrel profile. Also, what is your reasoning for running an upper with a front sight post? Thanks again!
I like quad rails because of how things attach to the outside of it and you don’t have to worry about the gas block getting in the way. I also find free float quad rails take longer to get hot but also cool off faster since there so much surface area.
The other thing people complain about is weight. I’ve found quad rails that aren’t ridiculously overbuilt but have *enough* material to be sturdy really aren’t heavy. The RAS and RIS II come to mind.
@Travers Kilroy Cooper Alvirez IMO, the DD rails are what I was referring to as *enough* material. DD RIS II is not heavy at all considering it's a 12 inch rail. Both KAC RAS rails are just about the same weight as a plastic handguard. When you look at these rails, you can see they go overboard in adding material. Compare this to a quad rail from Troy, for example. Those things have like 1/8th inch thick tubes that are fluted for weight relief along with the actual 1913 rails. Sturdy? Yes, but overly heavy.
I had the same issue. The RifleSpeed gas block wouldnt allow mlok sections to be added around it, so I got a BCM QRF and love it. I wouldve paid more for a DDM4 rail, but its inner diameter conflicts with the gas block as well.
Midwest Industries is pretty much my go-to for rails when it comes to value and quality as well. The Combat Rails in particular have a wide range of lengths to match up to different barrels, and being OCD about anti-rotation that I am they lock up nicely. I also got one of their complete 16" .223 Wylde Uppers and use it for 3-gun, very happy with it. Same with the BCM fore grip, I also used a bent-elbow c-clamp grip and the contours of the BCM fit me the best as I 'wedge' up into that corner.
This is one of the best accessorizing video I've seen because of the real life application in combat and competition parallel approach. Even the personal preferences echoes some of my sentiment which I solidly agree with.
The MI handguards and BCM charging handles really are great gear that doesn't break the bank. Great point about race guns and combat guns being nearly identical in set up. Just another excellent and informative video.
I snagged a BCM rail. I thought, for the longest time, that BCM would be expensive but theyre the same price as the Midwest rails. I also have a Midwest NightFighter, and its a good rail.
@@ALovelyBunchOfDragonballz They've gone up in price over the years, but are still really competitive in price, especially when you consider the quality.

Lots of great, hard earned information. Thanks for sharing. Love the price point information on good equipment. I agree with the EDT triggers. Good price to performance ratio. For those who like the ERGO grips, the Blackhawk branded version can be had for sub $10.
If you time your purchase right, you can get the gucci Geissele rails for close to 200. Usually on big sales where there are 20%+ off discounts from the original price of around 250/275/300-400. Going on the used market May even find you some sub 200 Geissele rails.
Regarding Smith & Wesson flash hider... I have used Yankee Hill Machine Phantom flash hiders over the decades. They are relatively inexpensive and really reduce the flash on a 16" or better 5.56 weapon. They have been the best flash hiding capability for the money that I have found. ETA: In the past few years, there was an article that tested flash from various popular muzzle devices. The YHM Phantom was near the top. It looks a lot like that Smith & Wesson so they are probably very similar in design.
I prefer the same setup with a B5 stock and the BCM gunfighter pistol grip. I’m more flexible on hand guards but I do pretty much insist on those two parts. Good video, thanks.
on my last build (couple of years ago) I went with the Midwest foregrip, geissle trigger, raptor charging handle, and bravo pistol grip. I have been happy with all of those parts. Thanks for pointing out the Barnes adjustable gas tube. That looks like a good option, especially if one runs a suppressor. The Arredondo magwell looks like something worth exploring.
Jeff dropping more knowledge bombs directly on target as per usual 😉👍 anybody know a guy from Smith&Wesson so they can sell 10's of thousands of those comps? Although Surefire is pretty good at keeping patents and designs quietly squirrelled away 🤔
Midwest is for sure my go too . Price and performance they can't be beat . They even make their new NIGHT-FIGHTER MLOK Rail series that's made for running lasers and all that fun stuff . The NIGHT-FIGHTER Rail is for sure on par with Geissele MK16 and half the cost . . Midwest Combat Mlok and Centurion C4 Quad are my go too rails. I'm pretty much on the page with what your go too accessories are . I've been using BRT Tuned Gas Tubes . They are not adjusting tubes . My Colt MK18 paired with Can is pretty gassy . I installed 0.62 BRT Tuned Gas Tube and not it's not bad at all . I will for sure check out the Adjustment Gas Tube. I bet that S&W Comp your talking about maybe came from that program. EITHER way awesome video bro

@@ModernTacticalShooting The same engineers that made the HK 416 also made the Sig 516 and Caracal 816 . I have yet to really notice a difference in 416 , 516 or 816 . I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Larue MBT-2S if you ever get a chance to try one out. I thought for sure it was going to be your trigger recommendation instead of the EDT, since it seems to be the go to reliable 2-stage if you don't wanna spend Geissele money.
I've had the opportunity to shoot a Geissele and a Larue trigger side-by-side at the range, and they felt extremely similar in pull. I'm very happy with my Larue
I love my MBT-2. I had an EDT years ago, but the hammer face wasnt machined correctly and it was damaging my firing pin after only ~200 rounds. Hyperfire wasnt too helpful with replacement, so I dropped it and went elsewhere. Sample size of one, mind you.
Man, you ain't kidding that a trigger upgrade is one of the best things one can do to their rifle. I cannot believe how much better my $109 trigger is vs my mil spec stock buddy ole pal trigger that came on my stock AR. Mind blown. Great video and great info from a great dude! One thing I would like to point out that the SSF trigger by Geissele is a two stage trigger and not a single stage, please correct me if you find other wise.
@@ModernTacticalShooting I remember reading something along the lines of “the SSA (the most common duty two stage trigger made by Geissele) is the civilian semi auto trigger, and it stuck with me cuz I almost bought the SSF trigger but then thought I won’t have a machine gun or a fully automatic, why spend that much money if I can find the exact same trigger in a semi version which is all I’d need anyway! Great video, and love hearing the why’s and experience behind each recommendation. Midwest Industries also makes a 2” wide diameter Mlok rail, gives a wider rail, more airflow, and still smooth on all sides, pretty much any support hand grip style will be comfortable.
Narrow rails are nice until you start putting alot of rounds down range. Then they heat up pretty bad. The quad rail gives you a bit more distance and heat dissipation. Yes they are heavier, but are better than burning the crap out of your hand.
the urgi Geissele mk 16 rail is 350,if u want it in black its 300 and they have sales were theyre a lot cheaper. those midwest suck if u plan on using a laser because they flex so much they wont hold zero,if u dont use a laser then theyre fine.i think the bcm would be a bettr choice over the midwest and u can pick those up for less than 200 bucks and those will hold zero. samson makes great rails and i agree with u on quad rails,i love em.
I have a Midwest NightFighter rail and a BCM QRF. Midwest is good, but I am sticking with BCM for now. Even if I go away from the quad, I'll get an MRF(?) and be happy.
Building my first AR Rifle I have most of the pieces. Picking up stripped lower at FFL tomorrow.. Waiting on my lower parts kit to get to me along with my buffer tube. I went with Aero Precision because they are a decent Bang for your buck option with quality & price. I ordered some upgrades as well.. I did go with a Radian Raptor trigger. My BCG is Nickel Boron which I hope long term reliability isn't an issue. I bought a slight upgraded trigger.. It's a "Match Grade" drop in trigger from Palmetto.. I know the company has mixed reviews but have heard positive reviews about the trigger and it costed me $80 Barrel is Chrome-Oly I went with a less angled grip from Magpul the K2 XL which fits my hands beautifully For stock I went with Magpul's MOE SLS which has a nice cheek rest I picked up some Iron sights on sale for now before I spend coin on a quality red dot optic I ordered a better spring rated for 750k shots And a T2 Buffer Ill grab some mags when I pick up the lower Im excited to put together the lower.. I hope I don't lose any springs 😹😹😹 I believe Ill be going with an angled magpul foregrip.
@@ModernTacticalShooting I think I do have a Chrome lined Barrel. Chrome'Oly? 4150 CrMoV? I'm new so I'm not sure if the above means Chrome lined. The BCG was on sale more than 50% I got it for $80 ish on sale from $200
you should check out the solgw nox flash hider, even better than the surefire war comp. Have used the ergo grip for years, really like the magpul k2 grip and bcm mod 3 grip. +1 on the midwest rails
Well, war comes aren't particularly good at flash mitigation LOL they are more of what their name says, a comp. Throw on a Surefire close tine or three prong and you're good to go
I think overgassing improving reliability is a popular myth because it puts a positive spin on what is arms manufacturers not wanting to deal with the headache of steel ammo bros going "my gun won't cycle steel, what gives!"
My favorite are: Lancer (although couple years back they had some QC issues) but I have some of their first L5 mags from 2007 still going strong, Gen 2 Pmags (just be aware all Pmags allow you to load 31rds, mag wont seat and chamber.) And finally IMI Defense, a Israeli mags polymer. Israeli verson of a Pmag they work great.
Jeff, forgive me if you've discussed this elsewhere, but what is your opinion of match/match grade triggers in defensive/fighting rifles? I have personally been of the thought that staying closer to standard 2 stage is a good idea for risk mitigation, and I can't change out the stock triggers in my issued carbine, so it makes sense to keep a standard trigger in my personal defensive rifle (that being an ALG ACT currently). Thanks brother.
Risk mitigation is finger off trigger until ready to shoot. SF and Special Operations has proven the feasibility and practicality of match triggers on guns, there has been NO increased instances of accidental discharges. Trigger finger awareness is how you again mitigate any risk
Profiles really dont make much difference if its a quality barrel. Sure SOCOM barrel looks cool but does not do anything a regular cut barrel does better. When choosing barrels for my ARs I go for the lining or coating and gas system length
Tried the 419 3 port hellfire on my dd5v3 7.62 and blew me and everything to the sides away…lol..recoil went to 5.56 or lower but the blast is bout as much to deal with…wonder what it’d sound like inclosed in a room?…area 419 makes some quality stuff..
Yes you have to take off hand guard and take out the gas tube to put in the new one. And yes I drilled a hole in the top of the hangaurd to allow access to adjust it adjust it or you could adjust it without hagd guard on and then slide it over. Honestly since I dont run suppressors no need for hole in handguard since I've never had to change gas presure after initial setting
Any suggestions on optic for my A2 “Bushmaster” windom ME with “carry handle.” I can buy a riser that fits in slot secured by screw, from Leupold, but not sure of optic since would be sitting too high.
I just buy Geissele super duty uppers on Black Friday. $900 for a complete upper with airborne CH and BCG. The CH & BCG alone would cost around $450. Factor in you get a G upper, CHF barrel, and a Mk16 rail, $900 is a bargain!

the urgi Geissele mk 16 rail is 350,if u want it in black its 300 and they have sales were theyre a lot cheaper. those midwest suck if u plan on using a laser because they flex so much they wont hold zero,if u dont use a laser then theyre fine.i think the bcm would be a bettr choice over the midwest and u can pick those up for less than 200 bucks and those will hold zero. samson makes great rails and i agree with u on quad rails,i love em.
I have a Midwest NightFighter rail and a BCM QRF. Midwest is good, but I am sticking with BCM for now. Even if I go away from the quad, I'll get an MRF(?) and be happy.
Building my first AR Rifle
I have most of the pieces.
I know the company has mixed reviews but have heard positive reviews about the trigger and it costed me $80
Barrel is Chrome-Oly
I went with a less angled grip from Magpul the K2 XL which fits my hands beautifully
For stock I went with Magpul's MOE SLS which has a nice cheek rest
I picked up some Iron sights on sale for now before I spend coin on a quality red dot optic
I ordered a better spring rated for 750k shots
And a T2 Buffer
Ill grab some mags when I pick up the lower
Im excited to put together the lower.. I hope I don't lose any springs 😹😹😹
I believe Ill be going with an angled magpul foregrip.
Can't go wrong with Aero! I would have skipped nickle boron bolt carrier spent money on chrome lined barrel
Throw on a Surefire close tine or three prong and you're good to go
What about running an adams arms bleed off piston system? Was thinking of building a rifle with this
Adams Arms is a solid design.
I support this content.
I think overgassing improving reliability is a popular myth because it puts a positive spin on what is arms manufacturers not wanting to deal with the headache of steel ammo bros going "my gun won't cycle steel, what gives!"
What magazine's do you recommend for the AR? Saw in some of your vids you use Lancers, what are your real life experiences with those?
My favorite are: Lancer (although couple years back they had some QC issues) but I have some of their first L5 mags from 2007 still going strong, Gen 2 Pmags (just be aware all Pmags allow you to load 31rds, mag wont seat and chamber.) And finally IMI Defense, a Israeli mags polymer. Israeli verson of a Pmag they work great.
@@ModernTacticalShooting did you ever use the L5AWM in combat? Heard different things about them under certain conditions.
magazine's?
Thanks for sharing your experience.
Great info. Thank you.
Samson makes a great rail...riding on my LMT Defender 2K, it provides a bit more real estate for my light.
What are your thoughts on the different barrel profiles?
Profiles really dont make much difference if its a quality barrel. Sure SOCOM barrel looks cool but does not do anything a regular cut barrel does better. When choosing barrels for my ARs I go for the lining or coating and gas system length
@@ModernTacticalShooting Ok good to hear that from someone like yourself. Thank you.
Do you need to remove the handguard to adjust the gas tube? Did you drill a hole to access the valve.
Thx
Yes you have to take off hand guard and take out the gas tube to put in the new one. And yes I drilled a hole in the top of the hangaurd to allow access to adjust it adjust it or you could adjust it without hagd guard on and then slide it over. Honestly since I dont run suppressors no need for hole in handguard since I've never had to change gas presure after initial setting
Any suggestions on optic for my A2 “Bushmaster” windom ME with “carry handle.” I can buy a riser that fits in slot secured by screw, from Leupold, but not sure of optic since would be sitting too high.
I would look for a AR Gooseneck mount www.gunauction.com/buy/5778387
When you install the adjustable gas tube, what weight buffer weight are you running?
I run hydraulic buffers (I know) not the popular answer. Barring that H2 is the way to go.
10-4
One of the best 2 stage triggers for the money is the larue mbt. Under 100 dollars and light years better than most others on the market
Yep...Love mine...What a difference indeed!
I just buy Geissele super duty uppers on Black Friday. $900 for a complete upper with airborne CH and BCG. The CH & BCG alone would cost around $450. Factor in you get a G upper, CHF barrel, and a Mk16 rail, $900 is a bargain!
Heck yeah it is
More story time please. We can get gear advice anywhere. We can get tactics anywhere. We can get training anywhere. We probably can't get your mindset from a lot of people though.
Nice to get some basic gear info from a trusted source though. Sometimes the internet provides so much information it’s hard to know what to trust.
LaRue MBT-2 flat. Opinions?
What is that extended piece that you have on your bolt catch?
Red-Mag Gen I extended bolt catch..not made anymore.
@@ModernTacticalShooting Any recommendations for something similar? At the moment I am playing around with the Magpul Bad Lever.
Awesome video. Thank you
what bolt release are you using?
Redi-mag extended, Gen I not sold anymore
Stocks- bcm, b5
Handguard- geissele
Trigger- triggertech
muzzle device- surefire
Grip- reptilia
Optics mount- reptilia
in your disclaimer section at about 2 mins. what are the flat black hand grips or guards attached to your rail? im looking for low profile like that.
Have you tried a Larue MBT trigger?
No, but the price looks good!
I'm personally not a fan of anything plastic when it comes to handstops vertical grips and sights, excluding the pistol grip. The argument for them is they are lighter, I say get stronger 😅
Great information
Sir there are different types of military drills for example parades, shooting, marching, etc but sir can you please tell me as a soldier that what are main categories in which military drills are categorized??
All shooting drills are just training
Have you had or seen any NDs with the BAD Lever?
No I dont think so
I run almost only lwrc piston m6s and adams arms piston sbp (pistols wink wink) what handguard do you recommend for pistons?
Says when his life is on the line he likes the magazine well says it so casual you used to having your life on the line bro thank you for service
You got the rifle for free and bought the accessories. I would take that deal.
As righty with a pistol and a lefty with a rifle myself would you please discuss your choice of extended bolt catch options? Thank you.
Great video
If you don't mind me asking... What reticle is that on the OD green one?
Just a red dot
17:17 what optic is that? Looks amazing
Aimpoint Pro
Do you a link you can share for the ERGO grip?
I need more info understanding about what kind of handguard where your front fingers are placed @ 6:18. I don't understand what that piece is
That was a BCM angled vertical grip
Luth mba-1 be looking around the room blinking really fast thinking yall think thats a fat buttstock... Lol
Hey Buddy, can you send me a link to those tan handrail m-lok covers ar 3:00
Thanks.
Excellent video. America is devolving so quickly I can't keep up and sadly we are looking for best options to defend our homes and love ones! Never thought we would be here, but here we are unfortunately! They have allow the fight to come home!
I’ve been trying to get people on the Hiperfire EDT for a while. I run the Designated Marksman version.
Oh he's goooooooooood!
Is 'rail' common slang for handguard?
Once again great job. Passing on those hard earned experiences from your time with boots on the ground and the platform...DOL/RLTW
Thank You
