    AnsuR is the god-rune primarily associated with Ódinn in proto Oldnorse lore: he is the ultimate rune master of the norse pantheon. In elder futhark inscriptions rune-masters often took on his mystic names when carving magic runic staves themselves. The song AnsuR actually starts with powerful and authentic runic inscriptions carved on bone amulets by such high status rune masters (apparently called by the title 'ErilaR', taken from a Scandinavian tribe -the Herulii-. The Herulii started using the runes from a very early period on).
    The song opens with the Lindholm inscription (not added to ther lyrics of the cd booklet)
    'Ek/ErilaR/SawilagaR/Hateka'
    followed by
    'Ek/Wiwar/Fahida/UngandiR'
    ('I the runemaster am called Sawilagar' & 'I the Weaver color/hallow the runes -'Un GandiR': 'against evil magic/evil forces'. Then follows
    'Gibu auja':
    ('I) give good fortune'. Wardruna then actually evokes the Alfather himself:
    'Withur/ wijan':
    'Óðinn hallowed'. 'Víðr' (= a welknown Óðinns name: 'He who hallows' or 'He who knows'). And finally:
    'AnsuR wija':
    Possibly: 'Sacred (rune) AnsuR'.
    From that point the lyrics from the booklet (now in Oldnorse) are sung. The line 'Valhallar Vísir' also is a classical Óðinns name (heiti) 'Wise One of Valhǫl'. All in all a very powerful Gáldr, one of Wardruna's most intense songs!
    To all who enjoy Wardruna's songs and messages: 'heill sá er kvað/ heill sá er kann/ njóti sá er nam/ heilir þeirs hlýddu! (last lines Hávamal)

      Lopt the Treacherous
      Thanks, simply adding my interpretations, Galdrs are and were always strictly personal: Only Einar can tell you the dept and purpose behind this song, but this is what I make of it.

      Addendum: ErilaR Grimnir made a good point that the 'Ek WiwaR' -part should read: 'Ek WiwaR Runa(r) Galandi' ('I the Weaver sung/screamed the rune(s)'. Listening back I think he got the right of it (thanks for that one ;-)

    The beginning of AnsuR is conducted in Proto-Norse. The words signify the origins of the runes in their most primal fashion. Therefore, the opening ‘call’ known as the “Galdr” serve as an opening. The galdr serves as a means to open proverbial doors or bring to people's attention that an invocation is about to happen. The segment of the introduction where all members of Wardruna participate is called the “galandi” which is a sequence of six words and sixteen syllables.

    yes and no, there are actually 3 main branches, the 2 you emntioned and the anglo saxon. but each of those stems from the ancient germanic runes and branches off in many varieties..i just wanted to clarify for readers who may thing the protonorse runes are the oldest.

    The galandi has been transcribed in red runes, appearing in the video “Wardruna - Yggdrasil Preview Part 2”. I can transliterate those runes, but translating them into English, I fear, would downplay their significance. The runes are plain to see, and one can hear them uttered in the song: “gibu auja, gibu auja withuh wijan ansur wija.” -Source, Lars Magnar Enoksen

    as example, most cities BANNED berserkers from entering. People who lived to die in battle (most warriors actually fought to make a living not to die) meant trouble, picked fights, had short tempers etc. They were outcasts and even inside a warband, most ppl did not want to have any business with them. they were creepy. And while time has changed, the human functions the same as ever, meaning, most ppl want to live their life without having to worry about someone killing you

    you are welcome. Anyway i should add, that Odin was by faaar lessm important than ppl think. Actually he didnt even make it in the top 10 of most worshipped gods. He is a god of war and death and unlike the preconseptions, most vikings did not want that. he was a god of the nobility, a god of the mages and a god of the crazy guys (berserkers) for the average farmer / trader / worker he was dangerous. He made men into heroes by putting them in hardships and made them suffer

    • @sumnik852
      @sumnik852 8 років тому +1

      Yuritower77
      Yes they use authentic instruments. But, these instruments that are authentic were not in Scandinavia at the time. In example the mouth harp, amongst many things.

    • @Yuritower77
      @Yuritower77 8 років тому +2

      The Jew’s Harp or Jaw’s Harp is a cross between an aerophone and a percussion instrument which is placed against the mouth and plucked such that different notes are produced by changing the shape of the mouth. By the Middle Ages it was in wide use across Europe and Scandinavia and was known by many names:
      mundharpe “mouth harp” (Denmark)
      munnharpa, munnspill (Norway, Iceland)
      mungiga “mouth fiddle” (Sweden)
      munniharppu, turpajurra, huuliharppu “lip harp”, märistysrauta “trembling iron”,
      mörinärauta “roaring iron”, huulipeli “lip-instrument”, suupeli “mouth-instrument”,
      Taaventin harppu “David’s harp”, juutalaisharppu “jew’s harp” (Finland)[33]

    i agree on protonorse (i am learning it) but the origins of the runes would be in proto german, which is roughly 2000 years older than protonorse and the language the first know runecarvings appeared in. The germanic tribes settled from austria to south to the river rhine in the west, eastern poland to the east and scandinavia, later also in france and england.. the vikings are basicly "northgermans" who kept their culture roughly 800 years longer than the not scandinavian tribes

    like in most cultures death, so they were the holy animals of the god of death which is Odin. But because "Odhinn" is a god of many things, the ravens also stand for wisdom, magick, bravery, sacrifice and to a degree male potence. However as 2 of them are Odins messengers ravens were also seen as a sign of good/bad luck as Odin is watching you, which was what most ppl did NOT want back then as Odin meant trouble, lots of.

    "vikings" were criminal outcasts of norse society. And they didnt just plunder other nations, they also pillaged norse settlements. Norse culture was rough but people tried to avoid war and promoted peace, after all only very few wanted to enter valhalla as glorius heroes, most wanted to actually life a happy peaceful life and continue that lifestyle in bilskinir (home of thor) Most norse ppl were traders, farmers, craftsmen and fishers who did not fight if possible
