- I bought a ford mustang II, and am about to try drive it 1,800 miles home from Arizona to Tennessee. This car is a 80s build drag car, and we recently tried to make it roadworthy. Strap in, this is going to be one big ride!

Am i the only one that absolutely cracked up when the mustang pulled off and he said he didn’t know if he was gonna have to go pick up the light pole, derek is the funniest dude alive without even trying
It's great to see you and your son together.
Because its them that matters most 👍👍👍
17mpg with tires on the roof!!
Who-da-thunk?
This great country has so many beautiful out of the way old roads to travel for sight seeing with the family . you have to have the right vehicle though , I traveled an old route 61 from the south through Missouri all the way to the Minnesota - Canada border, the older kids loved it it , the younger ones don't remember that one . keep up the good work Derrick , god bless you and your family .
I did this with my son. Drove from Indiana to Idaho and back seen all we could in between. Motorcycles with my father to the Pacific Ocean and back. Road tripping with your sons are the best.
Just a boy and his dad having an adventure. Flew to LA with my dad and picked up a stepside chevy, left LA Midnight friday night, back home in Alabama monday morning so early the street lights were still on. Only stopped for food, fuel and 8 hours in a motel in a sketchy part of Albuquerque. Had a lot of good conversations and heard a lot of good stories from my dad, I drove about 95% of the trip. He's been gone 10 years now, miss him every day.
I’m sorry about your dad. I understand, my dad’s been gone since 2020. He just retired and bought himself a Tahoe and wanted to travel. He was diagnosed with cancer and didn’t even make it a year. 😢
@@sippigrrrl ohh, that's rough, sorry for your loss as well.
Awesome time, man! And I appreciate Derek too. Hate your paw is gone, I lost my mom about 9 years ago. But your comment reminds me know I need to take a trip with my dad. I've had a little trip with my youngest boy from Bama, TN, and back. Great times. Looking forward to the same as you had! Thanks for sharing.
I am a full-time caregiver for my father. I’m so sorry for your loss. Please know he is an amazing man and has always been that man in your life. He was very proud of you. May God rest his soul. May God bless you and your family..
I feel ya friend. Lost my Pa on Superbowl Sunday '22. We were talkin about Stafford getting a crack at an SB (Lions Fans) and he passed while having a nap just before kickoff. Miss him too much. He took me all over Canada and the USA on vacation adventures as a kid. He was a foreman at the auto plant and always ran into someone he knew in our travels. I think the funniest was him running into a guy he knew in Elvis's house. LOL
Love how all 3 boys are getting involved with your recoveries now.
All family is forever Derek God bless you good sir
Bailey did a great job, I can see his traights of Mom in resemblance. What a great journey that is unforgettable. Thanks for sharing.
I don't see this particular little human really being into the whole car culture myself? Hopefully he understands how cool it is to be going down Rt 66,especially with his dad!
@@docsmallblock6584he shows up on Lil Grip Garage from time to time with his brother.
It’s nice to see them
working together .
Yes! What’s with his hair😂
That little town you stopped in east of Albuquerque is Moriarty, my hometown. I used to work at the truck stop across from the museum. Glad to see you didnt miss the museum,
Oh neat.. I live just 5 miles north of the dragway.
I know you probably hear it a thousand times a video... but man... some of us just didnt have the top tier Father that you are. A guy sometimes finds himself wiping washer fluid out of his eyes during those real wholesome moments in these videos. Even things as small as you moving him over to the inside of the sidewalk so you can walk near the highway...
You are an amazing man sir...
Thank you kindly, I'm blessed to be a father and try to make the best of every moment!
@@ViceGripGarage I've been watching your show basically since the beginning, and I feel like you would be a real joy to converse with and talk about cars. I wish I could tell you all my ridiculous ideas that I've had about cars and switching motors, and I bet you could give me some expert insight on a bunch of random stuff I think about
This channel isn't about cars. This is everything else. Family, thoughts, life, and a lil bit of love. The cars are supporting actors.
Great journey, thanks for taking us along!
Got a picture of you last night OH MY GAWD. Your humor is awesome 😂😂😂
So a fella was driving back to Georgia from a week in Kansas thinking the highlight of the trip was getting just a little lost in the Osage Reservation.... Thanks Garmin, but managed to make it to Ar-Kansas and who do I run across, A 1975 Mustang with two huge tires strapped to the roof between Ozark and Russellvile on I- four Zero, A big Honk and a wave.... I'll be dipped, made the whole trip!
Got them highway 40 blues!
Great share!
I know you got excited at the sight of these fellers!
Derek, please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please spend every damn second you can with your boys because we lost our 33 year old son December 1st 2023 and I can't stop thinking about all the times I said no, I'm working or I'm busy. You have an amazing family and love watching your videos. Thank you so much for the smiles you have given me.
God bless you Bradley🙏🙏🙏
Sorry buddy
May God bring you peace.
My heart is with you and yours Bradley! Keep your head up. Your boy will always be watching ya. ❤️

Re:160°... inner fender wells probably has a little impact.
Thats a lovable little car. Keep it.
My favorite part is when your boy is laughing at the situation using the sunglasses as a mirror. I love your videos! I think its great that you get your boys involved with the adventures!
Love that!
Vapor locks🤣🤣🤣
@@ViceGripGaragewould be nice when school is out that you take each of the boys on a restoration tour. Let them pick the junker they want to help you drag back to the shop.
"I didn't know if I had to go pick up that light pole or not". So subtle, yet so true. 56:05
Love that you take the boys with you on adventures!!! Love from a dad in Sweden.
I have two favorite parts...Bailey "warming" his hands by the fire on his phone, and your wonderful sense of humor. I lost count of the number of times i laughted at your commentary. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
The fire on Bailey's phone actually made me laugh out loud.
Derek hearing you tell your son to switch sides so your along the highway and he’s along the fence is truly words of a man raised the right way. I do the same with my wife and my little guy. If only people still had the same ethics
Pops on 66 was a blast when I went with my Great Great Grandparents when we were visiting family in Oklahoma. We live in Michigan. It was my first time on ole 66.
Are great with your son, reminds me and my dad in so.e of his early cars. Going all over the US.
I’d like to suggest that if more people acted with the respect Derek has for others and his family instead of the name calling and open hostility to anyone that doesn’t share your opinion the United States would be far better off.
For me, Bailey was the hit of this trip. Honest, yet able enjoy himself taking an interest in what interests his Dad and thinking of his Mom and brothers to buy something for. You have a treasure in your sons, Derek. God bless 🇨🇦
I love how he laughs at his dad's shenanigans 🤣👌
Proof that quality parenting goes so far
Fuckin eh bud proud Trudeau hating Canadian through and through!

Derek might be able trade cars at the junk yard !!😂
That Mustang was born the same year as me! 😊😊😊😊
What a Great Dad!
Derek is such an incredible dad. Despite needing to get the trip done on a time table, and fighting all the car problems; he still made time to stop at all the museums and gift shops along the way, and pick up some souvenirs. That stuff is so important to kids. Going out of the way to enjoy, and embrace that, really makes for a proper vacation and memories that Bailey won't ever forget.
A lot of Dads would have stuck to the road, and skipped the shops and stops. Pretty awesome to see. His kids are very lucky to have such a great Dad!
New to the channel?
@@simonmenzies3142you couldn't be more wrong...
@simonmenzies3142 Spoilt? Do you mean spoiled? How about Bailey playing the perfect foil to Derek's antics. Do you recall Derek saying to Bailey at ~0:50, "I'll be optimistic and you can be pessimistic." And Baily agrees. Also, did you read the disclaimer at the beginning of this video? These videos are made predominantly for entertainment purposes, and the banter between father and son is for our entertainment. Its not necessarily genuine in demeanor. So Just sit back, relax, and don't get your panties all in a bunch. It's plain to see that they love one another. So sorry you couldn't see that.
That light pole Mustang joke was gold and said so nonchalantly.
You are very blessed Eric. Enjoy your time with your boy Bay Leaf cherish them.
“Maybe that’ll work; probably not.” is how I go through life. Need this phrase on a VGG t-shirt!
This is my favorite car channel by far. Keep it up Derek. It's awesome to see your son's out there with you.
Great trip I am so glad you took your son with you it awesome to see you and him together May God bless you and your family always in Jesus Mighty name I pray Amen,
This is a car channel? I always think of it as a family channel...with a bunch of coll old cars in the background🙂
I listened to this video yesterday night with my old cat sitting on my lap and we fell asleep. I had to put him down today and this video will always be the last memory I have, thanks Derek.
so sorry to hear that, my cat of 15 years has kidny porblems she well not be with me much longer we just went camping yesterday she loves all the smells in the wilderness wore her out our pets are family.
You made my eyes sweat, it wasn't tears. Lost two of my buddies last summer. One was a little handicap guy I saved. He had problems his entire life and only had one eye. I made it as comfortable as I could for him. Then my tux passed, he was 17 years old. That cat helped me through my mom passing and was with me through my addiction and getting clean. They become our little partners and are always happy to see us. Same with our pups. I also resued the one eyed cats brother at the same time. He is still with me and he is always at my side or sleeping on dad. Im a large bearded biker covered in tattoos, so keep this between us. Sorry for your lost pet.
Never married never had kids, human ones that is, my current five cats are my best friends, the oldest is 19 and shows no signs of stopping, she's as healthy and feisty as ever, she still looks like a kitten, she sleeps with me every night.
😢
@@budddove6480 Thanks man, I wish you the best with yours !
If you're looking for a cool adventurous trip for next year with Bradley you should look at the Loneliest Road in America, Hwy 50 across the center of Nevada. It's a long way between gas stops so pack plenty of fuel...lots of fun out on that old road. Castles, burgers, Ichthyosaur fossils, you name it!
What a great time with your son, that's the way you make the family a family. More of that needs to happen for a lot of kids these days and everything will be fine.
Back in the early 80s I took scuba diving lessons in blue hole New Mexico. It’s kool.
Glad to see Baily with you,he is getting older❤😊
I think Ford made 3 good engines.. 351 Cleveland/ 302 v8 /and the 300 online 6😊
Love the online 6 😂
😂
I was Born a Mechanic + am almost 70 now. DEREK Continues to AMAZE me with his Knowledge, Tricks, Friendship, etc. Thanks DEREK + FAMILY, I feel at HOME !
I think it would be absolutely amazing if you did a bus restoration and made it a really nice livable situation no matter how long that took (making episodes out the process) and took the whole family out on a cross country road trip (could even make it a challenger where once you reached a certain amount of miles you swapped the engine with any engine that you could find locally)
14:12. My god I wish I lived by a view like that. That’s incredible.
I'm a diesel mechanic for the company you stopped at in safford to get the tires balanced im in the big white shop next to it. Damn wish I would've met you guys
Derek I just wanted to let you know that you’re the reason I’m a mechanic’s apprentice today, I just got done not too long ago with my first classic car repair on a 65 mustang replacing the transmission, along with some other things here and there. Ive been a long time fan since I was about 19 and I’m only 24 now but every time I thought about giving up on trying to become a mechanic after watching another video of yours it brought back what excited me about cars in the first place. You inspire millions, keep up the good work.
I am 86 and enjoy all your adventures, especially your revivals. When I was about 13 my Dad bought a home made tractor of sorts. We had to travel about 13 miles to get it. My Dad drove it home and I drove his 49 International pickup. I had an issue driving home but that's off topic. Anyway this rig included a manual wooden dump body and a saw table rig. It had no cab, the front the seats to the bumper were car like but it had big truck tires on the rear. The most unique thing about it was it had 2 three speed transmissions hooked up so if you both in reverse this your slowest forward gear. I called it "Donkey Low." If you left one in reverse you had 3 speeds in reverse. Including the Donkey Low you had 7 forward speeds 1-1,1-2,1-3,2-2,2-3 and 3-3. This was my Dad's work vehicle but it was my ATV years before there was such a thing. My thoughts is you should take a couple of junkers and make a project like this with your boys. I'm sure you are much too busy to take on something like this . Sorry for the lengthy comments. Good health and continued success to you and your family.
Back in 2001, a friend of mine and I did the Powertour. It started in Pontiac Michigan, and traced Route 66 all the way to San Bernardino Ca. 8 days to complete, then the drive back to Alberta. Great trip, great memories.
My favorite part of the journey was watching you interact with your son. You’re a lucky man.
I've been watching VGG for a long time now, and I've always thought it was wild that the police hasn't stopped him with all of the dumpster fires he drives home. It's really respectable that you refuse to show these things on your channel. We're all just people. A lot of people seem to forget that.
Back the blue til it happens to you.
@@p.i.staker886 go ahead and let me know what you mean by that.

Un-freaking-believable!! Your wife must be amazing to let you take your son on an adventure like that. I'll bet he will never forget it. Reminds me of when my Dad and I drove from Denver to Phoenix. Talked cars the whole way. He has been gone 25 years and I miss him more every year. Thanks for sharing such a great memory with us and recalling a memory for me.
I had an international pedal tractor...i did everything with it....i strupped the sproket..broke the chain twice.. rolled down a hill..tape er off and gave er a new shiney red paint job once..actully took a drill and grinder and made the rear tread deeper...bc it was getting bald..actully cudnt tell that i did it...i even brokw the small wagon that came with it a few times. My dad use to say i put in the same amount of work on that pedal tractor that yheu did in thier big tractors...
Woke up to the sunrise and watched part 2, I loved the part where you guys woke up after the blizzard. I just love mountains, honestly.
You are such a great example of a great father for all of us dads! Thank you for being the guy that you are and bringing us along!
I appreciate that!
@@ViceGripGarage Derek, I'm SO in need of a daily driver. Where would a fella go to check out an inventory of cars you have for sale.

Derek, I am a retired Traffic cop from the UK and I thank you for your positive attitude to my colleagues. I should imagine that your demeanour does you a lot of favors when you do get pulled over and I wish that everyone I dealt with was as decent a guy as you are.
I still have my Blue Ford Tractor from 1980 or so. All metal, still works.
"I didn't know if i had to go pick up that light pole or not" after the fan in the mustang peeled out had me rolling!
Me too. Didn’t see your post.

I stopped at the big texan a few times while passing through. I never tried the 72 ounce. But their food is pretty good. I enjoyed stopping there.
Thanks Derek for the wonderful road trip. I loved the old weird trucks and delivery wagons and strange combines and road equipment.
Great video! I retired in 2020. That summer my dad and I hooked his small enclosed trailer to his mint and pampered 2014 Escalade and headed from Bloomington, MN to his other home in Palm Desert, CA. He had a list of things he needed help doing there. Two weeks of good adventures and time together. Memories for a lifetime. After the trip he gave me the trailer and I bought the car when we found him an almost new Escalade. He passed in 2021. So glad we did that.
I think this is the most time we've ever "spent" with Bailey. Great kid! I did get to say hi to him and Bentley briefly last year at Iola.
If you like the twisty curvy roads over dramatic land one of the best examples is the north-east entrance to Yellowstone National Park. Even more so when you realize that some of what you are crossing are huge blocks of rock that participated in an unimaginably huge landslide and traveled dozens of miles.
Love these 2 episodes! These are the kinds of trips that rarely get recreated and become memories anymore! So cool you did this with your son! Love the channel!
I lost it on the 'He vapor locks like his momma'
This is one of the best videos ever!!! Thank you Derek for bringing memories of my childhood with my dad. Showing the world how important our kids are and that a little effort and a little patience will put huge smiles on our kids faces!!!! God continue to bless you and your family!!!!
Wow, thank you!
We used to jet back and forth across the Texas panhandle often, and one time we were in Amarillo and the wind wasnt blowing, true story.
Look up "manifold Destiny" IIRC It's a book on How to cook with the meal wrapped in Foil and laid on the Intake Manifold Vee. 15:06
Watching and hearing your son laugh with you and at you. Those moments will never be forgotten! Thank you Derek
The best part of my Fridays are watching a new VGG.
I think it's damn cool You brought your son along for the adventure. Says a lot that you had such a good time having him there...
I'm Positive the experience isn't something he will soon forget either...
Way to go Dad!!!!
@49:18 He vapors locks like his mom...
My favorite part of the trip, both 1st and 2nd parts, was seeing you and your son spending quality time together. The car content was fine, but the family time is priceless! Great job Dad!!!
Derek, Bailey, Jessica, Bentley and Bradley. Thank you for the main point of VGG... memories! We are only here a short while, so epic adventures with Dad, Mom and brothers is our reward for living... not riches, not power (except maybe a big block) and not fame. The phrase "remember the time..." is the payoff.
Derek, your in Moriarty New Mexico. Check out Shorty's for food!
Reminds when I took my $600 volvo 850 that was sitting couple years I just put used brakes on it and used fuel pump and took it on a 1300 mile road trip to Utah ..took the wrong road across the mountains went 70 miles up and down snow covered mountain roads with no homes anywhere just deer and dirt .. questionable brakes .. I was glad to see the see the city lights that night .. I did see some cool stuff up there ., still driving it 8 years later ..
302 ran excellent surprised c4 didn’t give up .. I miss having mustangs and adventures getting them ..
These guys were so cool to meet! Love seeing him make these runs with the kiddos!
All you kids are soooooo genuine! You have such a great family and channel. My whole family loves this better than regular TV and cable.
Priceless father son time.
Bailey is as cool as a cucumber! Great travel companion! WAY TO GO FELLERS!!
@ViceGripGarage With the way that the Mustang 2 is build in the Front end with the Air passage in the grill and combo's with the air Scoop. Yes Derek that is why the car says so cool. Now just to let you know that is coming from a 76 year old Master Mechanic that drove one of those from Washington DC to San Antonio when he was 17. His Daddy moved to San Antonio Tx for work. That Man is my father. we watch you together sometimes, He's a fan. Keep those Awesome Videos coming Brother.
28 years ago I did a trip in a 1979 mustang pace car from CA Bay area to SC with my dad and those memories are burned into my brain. Great times many times we over heated we froze our butts off stopped at an army surplus store and got warmer dry clothes (sunroof leaked when it rained and while going though the snow over the mountains but I wouldn't trade those memories for anything. My dad passed away in 2016 and I've still got the car, it hasn't ran since we made that trip ended up with a crack in the block. Love to see anyone man/dad spending time with their kids. I try to always include one of my 2 daughters in anything that I do. When they grow up they will always have the times that they spent with their dad. Thanks for the GREAT VIDEO
You should get Derek to get that Mustang running!!
@@dwdzztop6270 would love to but I know either the block or hear have a crack in it. So unless he brought an engine with him it wouldn't be an easy fix. But I love the 1979 mustang and love the door handles on the inside of the car since they are on the lower bottom half of the door and not high up by the window.
I live in Michigan and you are so right. I’m embarrassed to let people know that I am from Michigan. Great trip with your son.
I enjoyed the trip - a quick map would be good for all us in the UK
Mad amounts of respect for not giving the cops a hard time or jamming a camera in there face. I always wondered if you ever got pulled over, nice to see you take in stride.
LOVE IT. I did a 10,000 mile lap of AMERICA in a '73 Mercury Monterey I bought the day I landed in LA, from New Zealand. Cost me $400 in '87, and watched Bob Glidden, and Bill Elliott win in their Ford Tbirds, which was one of my main reasons for the trip ! Thanks for bringing back those memories mate !!
The view from Bailey's seat is kinda like the view of the Millenium falcon when Han or Chewie was working on the wiring????? Hence the dash and up the A-Pillar/roll cage!!!!!!
Didn't know if you knew but pledge furniture polish works great on plexiglass. We use it on our golf cart windshields. Makes them almost invisible.
Derek, it seriously warms my heart seeing your boys so involved. There's no better feeling than your son smiling and looking up to you. My son is only 5 but he loves wrenching with daddy and loves everything about cars...and i have to and cant thank you enough because you've absolutely helped him get into cars by watching videos with me, and you have gotten me through a lot of rough times. Ive had two surgeries and deal with severe chronic pain and in the hospital a ton...and your channel always brings smiles and laughs to my face. And i know you've helped so many others...from the bottom of my heart, Thank you. Been here since the beginning...will always support you guys in any way i can.
Brother that's awesome your boy is smitten with wrenching, cars, hanging out with his dad. I promise you that even though he's a young guy, every second you spend teaching him, laughing with him, getting his take on things, etc - he'll remember every bit of it. You're a good dad and I appreciate you sharing your story. Hang in there, brother.
Spending time with your children when they’re young is the most important, later they will not want to.
Derek your a great Dad. What you do now you will be so blessed later.
Bailey will look back on that trip 10 to 20 years from now and revel in the uncomfortable trip with his old man. Just awsome Derek.
"Just give me high gear" Love the Days of Thunder quote!
Good ole’ I-40 (east of ABQ). Spent a week there one day due to a blizzard. Had two of my kids with me and it turned out to be one of the best trips we ever took together. Unfortunately missed my grandpa’s funeral due to the weather.
All credit to you and Jessica for raising such great young men. I love how Bentley is the little optimist and your “Mini Me”. Bailey seems to be the realist and his part of dad’s personality is the “Nope…terrible idea” portion. Bradley seems like the stabilizing glue between the other two who never seems to get too upset or ahead of himself. I love your videos and I have enjoyed seeing how your brand has grown and how your boys are growing and getting more involved.
This channel is a shining example of what social media should be about! So much of social media has rotted our society and good wholesome family activities is what America needs today! Love it, keep up the awsome content!!
Derek, when you mentioned seeing the old steam threshing machines run I remembered the "Steam-O-Rama" in Springfield, MO they do every September (12-15 in 2024). Hundreds of old steam/gas/diesel tractors, and a big swap meet to boot. I just took my kids to see it last year and they were threshing wheat into a 1928 pickup. Pretty neat, might make a cool stop on a revival sometime. It's located right off of I-44.
Yes Arizona and New Mexico, has lots of high elevation areas, mountains and snow. Arizona actually has more trees than many Midwest states.
What an adventure with your son. Memories for life, good job Derek and Bailey.

I learned more on those road trips about him, life, how to drive, etc etc. I’d love love love one more road trip with him. Excellent video Derek. Your son may not appreciate it or understand how valuable these times are with him but I know later in life your boys will.
