Pearl makes X like 100 times better. When I watched X I didn't think much of it, but after seeing Pearl I watched X again and it was a lot better. Noticing things that I wasn't even thinking about like the property Pearl lives at, and how she never leaves there like she wanted to. That crocodile eating Pearls victims, made so much more sense to me why Pearl was watching the crocodile eat that blonde in X, and the way she said she never liked blondes.

Ray and Faye Copeland, however X ending is different as Ray and Faye got 5 life sentences and Ray died in prison and Faye suffered a stroke became disabled and was paroled out to an old home. SMH. What the scarecrow scene said to me personally wasn’t so much “she’s sexually into this inanimate object bc crazy person reasons” but more sort of highlighting her desperate need to be living in a fantasy at all times, her extreme discomfort with being present in the real world, and also maybe showing that it’s escalating, that she’s retreating so far into her fantasy life she’s losing her grip on when what she’s actually doing is… uh…. let’s say “out there” lol

I believed the older couple could kill the younger group because they had the element of surprise. If you think about it basically every kill is out of nowhere.. the pitchfork by Pearl, the shotgun by Howard.. etc. They’re old and the young people don’t suspect them to be killers until the very end. I could understand where Ruth was coming from punishing Pearl for buying the candy. If your family is close to starving and your kid wastes what little money you have on empty calories, it makes sense to teach them a lesson about it. However, if food is that scarce, it also doesn't make sense to deny "charity" and let a perfectly good pig go to waste. Ruth said no one would help them because they're German, but she just made that a self fulfilling prophecy by being too proud to accept a kind gesture.
I think her outlook on life was technically more correct, saying you have to make the most out of what you have or else you'll never be happy, but she herself never showed an ounce of happiness, even crying herself to sleep. What's the most sad to me is she and Pearl could've been content if she'd just given some warmth and love along with the harsh lessons about reality

Honestly, what impressed me with Pearl's story is that her desperate need to get out of the farm, break the routine and pursue her dreams was very relatable to me (obviously, minus the murderous tendencies, duuh~~). Her monologue broke my heart because it was something I would say couple of years ago (again, minus the murderous tendencies). I went through 4 year unemployment which made me feel like I would never leave my house, I was reduced to housekeeping and helping my mom take care of my sick grandma and any chance in moving out / pursuing my dream would fail and make me feel like I was going crazy. Pearl's desperation and going crazy felt very real and genuine. It would've been easy to just make her another ''crazy girl with psychopathic tendencies'' but they added that extra layer of realism, of something many of us go through, which made everything even more disturbing.

The way I see it, the scarecrow scene holds much more meaning than it's usually attributed. It represents the beginning of Pearl losing her grip on reality, letting go and indulging in her fantasy land that she's had to keep repressed due to her responsibilities on the farm. I also love the decision of making Pearl kill Mitsy in the very end, as it shows how, as time goes on, Pearl needs less and less of a reason to commit murder - the mother's murder was initially an accident but it ultimately gave Pearl the idea that she can take matters into her own hands, the projectionist's murder was intentional but at least we can pinpoint the reason as to why she did it. Whereas, Mitsy never wronged Pearl in any way, rather Pearl reached the stage of killing people because she imagined them doing something she didn't like - she descended deeper into madness than was ever apparent to the audience or Pearl herself.

I think Mitzy really didn't land the audition but after Pearl got more irate about Mitzy saying no, the only choice is to go along with whatever Pearl needs to hear. I think if Mitzy won, we'd have a scene showing she did but it's just implied by Pearl based on what the judge said about being blonde. They didn't have shorter lifespans, leading to early marriages. There were instead social expectations and constructs in place which made marriage necessary, and early marriage preferred. If there's no birth control, sex becomes much higher risk for everyone involved, because, you know, babies WILL happen. So there were significant social controls in place to ensure that sex only happens between engaged or married couples so there's someone to take care of those inevitable babies. Which means if you are young and full of hormones, you are going to marry quick and marry early so you can have sex. The lack of career opportunities for women made it necessary for them to attach themselves to a man who can provide an income, and 1918 was before all of those modern home conveniences we currently enjoy, so household management was an actual, vital skill that needed an entire person to handle and was its own full time job, making it advantageous for both men and women to marry.

The average lifespan in the usa in 1918 was 36,6 years old for males and 46,6 years old for females, they just had a huge drop by 12 years in the average lifespan that year because of the flu epidemic. In 2023 the average lifespan in the usa is 79,11 years old and while it did drop because of the pandemic it didn't have a drop that drastic like what happened in 1918, because nowadays the medical field is more advanced. What you said is not wrong there were definitely different social expectations, but you can't deny that back then they also did have shorter lifespans than today, and that played a huge role on why people were marrying young.

@@sarabrenna5525 not really, when people cite average lifespan, its necesary to remember child mortality was too high lowering down the average, but that doesnt mean you would live less, people didnt drop death at 36, most died before reaching 10. And if you got through puberty you were already pretty good to go until youre 70. so marrying young had nothing to do with low average life, if anything marrying young would mean you had more time to have more kids, cause couples could have 10 kids and just 3 would survive until adulthood

The ending kind of parallels midsommar that way. some kind of inverse of it. Pearl had control over most people in this plot, at least by way of murder. Dani had none. At the end, we're confronted with their grotesque expression and filled with emotional conflict as viewers. Dani had a 'good for her' moment but was also still in mortal peril. I was vacillating between the cathartic victory of Christian's murder and fear that bad things were about to happen to her. Pearl elicited both extreme fear and pity. All these feelings felt very in conflict with their respective plots.

Girl, it’s called ASPD and is a trauma based disorder stop putting more stigma to mental illness. Also with ASPD you struggle with empathy and sympathy, which Pearl was shown to not only have but be overly sensitive to the entire movie “i know your lying because i feel things really deeply”.
She has a traumatic upbringing with parents she doesn’t feel loved by, she is driven by desperation.
Also, to me her mothers distaste for her irregular behavior, including the more innocent like wearing her dresses, feels so autistic coded to me who IS autistic btw. Like being outed as the weird or different one, excluded, social isolation, feeling as though AND being hated for everything about you to your core even by the people you love the most and that ON TOP of the fact that she is a women and to some extent, ALWAYS expected to perform and serve others ON TOP of her abusive environment ON TOP of the time it takes place held even higher standards of what women should be like.
Pearl is a character that longs for life and deeply loves, but is pained with hers never being returned or comparable to the way she feels. She has hopes and ambitions, she wants to be known she wants to be seen she doesn’t want to be second pick anymore. The need, like air and desperation that comes with has been installed to her HER ENTIRE LIFE.
She is a go getter and despite what everyone else says still chooses to try and believe in herself.
Her anger and violence is pent up aggression from all the years she’s had to endure, being abandoned over and over again, being taught to perform but not allowed to be seen. She doesn’t WANT to be that way, she is ashamed of it.
She is so relatable to honestly any women ESPECIALLY if you’ve struggled with mental health.
Pearl isn’t a good person, she doesn’t think before she acts, something evident in how bad at lying she is that she forgets the lie just a moment after it’s told, she does truly horrible things ESPECIALLY in X but it’s BECAUSE she is human BECAUSE she is flawed. Nobody is born evil, and mental illness is NOT what’s making you.

I think Mitsy’s death is so scary because of how slow and drawn out it was and I thought that she was quite likeable aswell, she seemed genuinely kind to Pearl and the only person who really felt for her. X was such a let down. It wasn’t terrible imo, just super basic. Think they banked too much on people being grossed out by h*rny old people but in reality it really isn’t disturbing. The film felt like just an excuse for gratuitous nudity, and apart from the alligator/shot gun deaths, and Jenna’s acting.. it was meh. HOWEVER, Pearl is by FAR a superior movie. It even made me like X a bit more. The call backs to the alligator, the blonde line, the adult film, were fun little details. If the plot was a bunch of sexually active young adults and not an adult film crew, not much would change in the story. Pearl wasn't really depicted as a sexual fiend like X made her out to be so the porn plotline doesn't hold much weight as I don't see how that would make Maxine a star in Pearls eyes. But we know from what Pearl’s mom said and Pearl’s monologue at the end that there was always something wrong with her and she hid it from Howard to make sure she would end up marrying him because she thought he would take her away from the farm & to a life of luxury.
Then as the years went on Howard maybe realized it was more than a cabin fever-type situation but just accepted it as his new life, or maybe he stayed believing that she “went mad” and just never got better. I believe this because in “X” Howard tells one of the characters basically that his wife is not well and her condition acts up at night.

In Pearl the house is nicely decorated and is very lively and cozy.
In X the house is bland and void of homeliness, stripped of wallpaper, paint, etc.
To me this shows the life Pearl dreamt for slowly faded as she grew older and older, and the house slowly died with that hope, until we arrive in 1979, the year X takes place.

I love this review, the voice acting was great lmao. But Pearl reminded me of a more extreme version of myself. The need for validation and acceptance. The constant mindset of succeeding and not staying in the same place. The attachment issues like that’s my girl fr 😭 she’s crazy but 🤏🏽 just like me.
Edit: I don’t need some random people on the internet to tell me to get help, I don’t know you neither do you know me. I said Pearl reminds me a little of myself, a heavily dramatized version as I have BPD. I’m literally in therapy. Please worry about yourself and be less ignorant, I didn’t ask for anyones opinion 💕

32:06 she plays tho! Because she didn't get the part but then she says she did maybe thinking Pearl would get more mad if she "lies" to her
