Totally agree :) I drive 2004 Nissan maxima 19 year old but we bout it 2 years ago for 3500 dollars and 80,000 miles and fully loaded 1 owner and it’s my baby! Drives wonderful and is in nice shape! Hubby also drives a 2000 Chevy truck and it’s again drives great and it’s like 23 yrs old! Old cars came be safe and reliable :) I don’t get people who think only new cars are safe… we grew up in those old cars and we were all fine… we’re here lol
When making a big purchase ask yourself if it's a one time payment and will you be using it for more than 10 years, if the answer is yes then usually those purchases are good purchases.
I literally did this when buying my washing machine. It took me 1 month to make the decision to purchase it. It has a 4 year warranty but it is an investment because I'll use it for many years to come or until it dies and needs to be repaired and i am already saving up cash for repairs that I'll keep separating as a just incase account for all my appliances so that if ever a problem arises i can fix it or replace it without ever having stress or using money not intended for it.
Bedroom for guest. Early in home ownership, I rented a bedroom set for a week for guest coming. I have family members who have borrowed from other family members or friends for the week. No need to buy until you have the cash.
A custom pink grand piano seems crazy to me but there are things I want to save up for in the future that seem crazy to other people and I really appreciate hearing what other people are saving for.
Saving for a brand new furnace, a dental appliance to fix my teeth and sleep apnea problems, a surgery for my spouse, fixing a leak in my basement and a sinking garage floor, used car, and hopefully having a kid, and having baby step 3 completed.
Where do we input submissions?! Someone give me some ideas. My husband and I will be selling our house in mid-2024. Our driveway is cracked beyond repair.. literally.. and the front porch is crumbling apart. I’m afraid it would make our house much harder to sell, but it’s also a very long driveway (at least 100 ft). I’m not sure we could even save enough in time for the summer when we’d need it replaced. But this house sat on the market for a year before we bought it, not sure why, and I do not want that happening to us this time! Context: no debt besides mortgage and a 5 month emergency fund saved (boosting it to 6)
So my car is 21 years old and I'm saving up for a newer car. It has 157,000 miles on it and still runs great, Oldsmobile Alero. I don't want a new car, but a gently used newer car. My friends think I'm nuts not trading up. As long as its running well, I'm keeping it. My concern though - is how much do I need to save to buy a decent used car. Im 67 next car will be my last car.
Depends on what you want, a good cheap car to go for is a the grand marquis, I seen a lot of them in great condition with well under 100k miles going for 5-10k
I am saving for a new car, my car is just about 200k miles. It’s a 2008. Lol 😂 I got it in 2011, and it’s great. I will drive it until I save up for a new car. 😂

If you're in baby step 3 and don't have a 3-6 month emergency fund can you still save for a big purchase? My car is 10 years old and it will probably take a few years to save $35k-$40k to buy a new one in cash
Why not just get the emergency fund knocked out first and then save up for the car? And going from a 10 year old car to a $35-40k car is a huge jump, so you could "baby step" into a $20-25k car first if needed.
Saving to buy a handbag to “fit in”. Where will it stop, car, house, neighborhood etc.? Trying to keep up with the Jones’ can be a vicious cycle. Buy a great handbag USED, because you LOVE IT, not to fit in.
I agree with most of these but as far as the Steinway go I think the most important question, which wasn't asked or considered, is can they play piano? If they can't and plan to learn on a custom $100k+ piano then that's a bit more ridiculous IMO.
I'm an online business manager so my savings goal is to for an iPhone and a Macbook. I'll be using them strictly for work so I can improve my output and qualit6 of work for my clients. If I didn't have the biz, those would be ridiculous purchases for me 😅 HAVE YOU SEEN THE PRICES? I have a 9-5 that I'm using to help get me out of debt but it's going so slow so I used some of the savings to put some of the fire out but hopefully I can get back to the figure I had for savings by December. If the piano isn't going to put her in debt, maybe it will bring her some joy and she can use it to teach others how to play 😊

The first one was weird, hearing Rachel say OP shouldn't save for a car. What if the person was going to save for 3 years and upgrade their 9 year old car? I fail to see how there is anything wrong with that. I'm starting to save to upgrade my 20 year old car, even though I probably wont get a newer car for another 3 years. Do y'all think Rachel's car is older than 6 years old?
I have been saving for a new car and it will take a few years but it would be hard to save enough quickly if I wait till last minute. I have 2012 Honda crv. 160 k miles. Fabulous car. But still want to be prepared ahead of time !!!!
