Loughborough To Leicester From The Footplate of GWR 6990 'Witherslack Hall': (Part One)

- Another opportunity to ride the footplate at the Great Central Railway with my friend & former BR collegue Alan. This time with 6990 and with so much footage taken over two trips I decided to produce two videos.
This 'Part One' is devoted to an almost 'real time' journey between Loughborough & Leicester North filmed from the footplate, a 'Part Two' to follow is devoted to the actual working envioronment of the footplate during a further round trip.
(Note: My apologies for wrong spelling of 'Witherslack' in opening title sequence).
This footage filmed on the 15.15 service from Loughborough on
Wednesday 23rd August 2017 and my thanks once again to all concerned for allowing it to happen.
For more info on this GCR resident loco go to
www.gcrailway.c...
Then visit the GCR & see her and/or her 'friends' in action.
FOOTNOTE: Before anyone questions the fact, although it might appear so, at no time was I hanging over the side of the loco and/or exposing myself to risk in obtaining this footage. I just use the right equipment!!
Witherslack hall is my favourite GCR loco she sounds amazing when she departs any station. Gives me goose bumps every time I hear her and ride behind her
Glad you enjoyed the trip Daniel, yes she is a nice loco.
love these train videos from england...very nice video to watch here in queensland australia tonight...mitchell - australian husband of a leicester girl
Pleased to hear that and thanks for watching. I will be in QL (Brisbane) in September so could be getting some QLRail footage for UK viewers. Cheers, Brian.
How have I only just stumbled across this one brian?
6990 is one of my favourite locos… she has just got such a mean bark to her
@@LiamsLocos If you 'stumbled' further down my channel Liam you'll find a fair few on board vids at the GCR.
Pre covid I was primarily steam .... keep looking & enjoy mate. Cheers, Brian.
Now that was a rare treat Brian, and I enjoyed every minute of it....excellent footage, now on to part 2...Regards...Bob
Something different eh Bob, glad you enjoyed it and was filmed handheld with the support you suggested (and use) which I thought worked quite well .. Regards, Brian.
It certainly does Brian, it's a wonderful piece of kit, and ideal for this type of work, where the 920's performance is second to none...Regards....Bob
Sorry Bob, I unintentionally fooled you there.... The camera for this one was a Sony XR500, the 920 was used hand held (on a neck strap)throughout Part Two on the footplate..... Brian.
Another fantastic opportunity there Brian! Many thanks for sharing the experience
Yes indeed Will, a very enjoyable day as always with good weather thrown in, glad you enjoyed 'the ride'.... Brian.
AN interesting view Brian. The GC is a great line, even a trip on a DMU is good - brings back memories for me of riding behind the driver on the mainline in the 1960s before local services in the Stafford area were electrified.
But a "driver's view" from a steam loco footplate is better, so thanks for sharing! Cheers, Rob
Glad you enjoyed it Rob, know what you mean about those DMU's so happy memories too...... I even used to get the Second Man's seat which spoilt the view lol. Cheers, Brian.
Brian , She sounds brilliant on the headphones great picture quality
Indeed she does Andrew, glad you enjoyed the ride, cheers,Brian.
Lovely video and great engine. She sounds great.
Thanks Matt, glad you enjoyed 'the ride'.... Check out 'Quest' (Ch37 Freeview) at 9pm on Tue 18th Sept. The 'Mega shippers' program should feature 6990 including bits of my footage. Cheers, Brian.
Nice job pulling the train into the station. Set the brakes then open the throttle a bit at the end to hit your mark on the platform.
She is such a beauty, as are all Halls, does she have a temperament tp match? You always seem to produce the best from her. Great video.
They are lovely loco's Peter but I cannot speak for her temperament as I wasn't crewing her, just videoing. Fired a few in my BR days but they were in poor condition then. Regards, Brian.
This is coming a annual event for you Brian.
Haha, you're right Mike, hadn't realised it was that long since the last one...... Must do better lol. ..
It is just a shame it is only single track from Rothley to Leicester North.
It is but it could be redoubled. All the money going to the connection to the north, who knows what will be affordable in the future now.
I have an Ideafor GWR 7029.
Pity so much time was spent viewing lineside, when the most interesting part would be on footplate working. But, that's because I'm an old GWR fireman.
Shame you missed the previous video to this one ua-cam.com/video/VK5hMM4D1rU/v-deo.html Using two cameras & filmed on same day. You must be old to be ex GWR, I suspect more like BR(W)Region like I was BR(M)Region!!
I’ve been past great central to many times
Awesome
gwr
Are you stating a fact or asking the question Terry? Either way that's correct!!
Who’s at the throttle?
Alan Binder is the driver on the 'regulator'....
That fire look a bit green and smokey not the sort of fire I would expect to see just before train if I had give giving a driver a fire like that in the late 50s and early 60s I would have been put off the footplate and found myself on a disciplinary in front of the shed master I had been a cleaner and fireman at old oak common until I left on the to take up my driving job in 1968
Yes but they are not preparing to set off from Paddingtton with an express to the west 😂. A different world to what we knew, I'm also a 60's fireman 😊.
@@SYKAROST will you a western region man
@@richardananedickinson4812 No, Midland at 21A in Birmingham. Did fire plenty of Halls & Granges though with best Yorkshire hard coal 😁.
