  • We take a look back of some 'Earl Of Mount Edgecumbe's exploits over a five year period. The Locomotive's ticket is due up in the autumn and locomotive is need of repairs which probably won't happen til the end of year. The locomotive's overhaul is hoped to take no longer than 12-18 months. I would of liked to of featured more shots from it's earlier day's, but I felt the quality of material just doesn't stand up to today's quality, so I felt these were my most favourite.
I hope you enjoy the video. Locations and excursions feature in video.

Many thanks, Liam and Phil, for this superb compilation with a most fitting title. Wonderful quality throughout, from an exemplary choice of locations. I hope you will take it as a compliment when I say that the sequences at 20:45 and 37:55 instantly reminded me of Terence Cuneo's paintings. Your exhaust trail capture at 39:30 is fabulous. Kind regards, Bob.

I was born in 2008 and my grandad got me into trains. Last year I saw Clun Castle the first steam train I had seen in 7 years. 7 years before I saw earl of mount edgecumbe and went to Tyseley twice and now I've seen alot more trains and been to one of my dream places... York. Seeing Galatea the jubilee today (it's like 00:23 right now). I am sharing this just to say how much I appreciate people who lived in those times who can tell my generation and others the stories of when they saw steam trains.

One of the great pluses of the Mainline Steam industry is that every week some where children will be exposed to all the sensations of a full sized steam train pounding past at normal operational speeds.

From Melbourne, Australia, in 2 months I'll be 65, as a child I was lucky. In 1934 when pregnant with my mother my grandad bought a massive amount of new Hornby O gauge clockwork trains Caerphilly Castle with multiple named passenger carriages behind it, Plus a new Hornby O gauge LNER 4.4.2. tank loco with multiple freight cars, Plus a LMS small 0.4.0 tank loco with some small carriages, there is Hornby Loco sheds, plate layers huts , large stations, vehicle crossings with single and double track . Then some months later Nanna gave birth to my mum alas the trains sat boxed & idle used occasionally when Pa's brother Albert & his 4boys came at Christmas.
Then in 1956 Pa found mum was pregnant with me, Nanna could have but one child, my mum. So then I arrived. When I was really small in my cot I remember being pushed into another room in the cot by Pa. He was transforming a large room into a play room, covering the polished wooden floor with "masonite" bark waste from the production of wood heat pressed with a coarse under side & a smooth satin side this was painted pale green then speckled with dark green yellow & black & covered the floor of the entire room, soon there were railway tracks being screwed down onto it, followed by roads cut from masonite painted black with yellow/orange and white road line markings and also screwed down with flush screws, next the Tinplate Hornby sheds were all put into position & screwed down, also built were hand made wooden buildings & truck sheds, Shops, Houses and a petrol station, then the big Hornby stations were screwed into place. In a room 20 x 15 feet, finally he had the son he had always wanted. When I was very small Pa wound them up I watched from my cot, when I was twoish I guess I sat & played with my dinky toy cars on the roads & just pushed the big passenger train carriages around until he came home & he produced the keys which made them go. It was wonderful, then when I was 4, I was given the keys & shown very very carefully how to gently wind them up without breaking their springs. Mounted on the wooden floor & on masonite every time the lead wheels went over the joint in the tracks , or more so on the level crossings the lead wheels made the da donk , da donk sound echoing in the otherwise empty large room. I have retired from my original career & moved 1 state south from Sydney, I have kept the layout , it has moved with me 4 times in my lifetime & needed a small section amputated to fit a just slightly smaller 15x18 ft room< but I have it all, still, near 65 years later, the 3 locos still all work & It has given many people many hours of enjoyment. It was fantastic to see the real thing in your wonderful collection of film. 120 miles south of Sydney my Nanna's family had bought some 200 odd acres of old farm & large farm house a 100years ago at Thirlmere. our land is on the western shores of the 7 giant lakes at Thirlmere. In the late 1920's a new section of track was completed on the great southern line connecting Sydney to Melbourne. So from Camden, to Picton there was major work completed , but from Picton to Mittagong there was a new massive deviation from the earlier track some 10 miles east. The 40 miles of dual redundant tracks was gifted in 1968 to NSW / Sydney railway historical society the small Town of Thirlmere is basically in the middle of this section in the southern highlands of NSW & there was already a massive siding there. SO late in childhood thru until right now , If at the property at Thirlmere I always stoppd in to look at the trains. Early in my working career, by default I met then president of the society. We became good mates & i gave him a set of keys to our holiday & weekend home instead of him staying at the Pub, in return , I was always allowed a free ride on the train runs up & down the old closed main line. To get a perspective , Camden town is about 200 feet above sea level, but Thirlmere 900 feet above sea , Mittagong 2000 feet above sea level & immediately behind the twin towns of Mittagong & Bowral sits Mount Gibraltar at approx 2500 feet & from the lookouts up there the towns appear as well laid out toy train villages old early towns & very, very English in their appearance. Residing at Thirlmere is a beautiful ex NSW government railways 3800 class A4 Pacific 3801 in apple green , in our Bicentennial year 1988 both it, 3801 & 4472 The Flying Scotsman hauled "the bicentennial train around Australia I took my first ten years long service leave & with Pa & my partner Georgine went on every inch of the run , the end carriage was a car carrier for the several day stops in the capital cities or points of interest , so I took my 1973 regency red long wheelbase XJ6, we drove to Melbourne to join the train 25th Oct' 1988 & returned to Sydney on 18th Dec'1988. Neither being a Castle class , but the next best thing .

Earl of Mount Edgcumbe is a Really Useful Engine in more ways than one. Long live God's Wonderful Railway. I'm not just saying that. One can see why the engine is called The King of Castles.

Another great production. I think saw the Earl in 2016 at the Severn Valley Pacific Power week running alternate services for those who didn't get Tornado/Flying Scotsman tickets.

Having shown that you can actually pan round and follow the action, I wish you would do it more often. This applies to many of the 'new breed' of movie takers. That apart, this is superb capture and sound.

There's a lot of old shots from back in the day, when my equipment and panning ability wasn't up to scratch. This was a compilation dating back from 2013. I will always pan when the location or environment allows for it. Thanks for the feedback.

Nostralgia. We would deliberately miss the "School Train" from Worcester Foregate Street to catch the "Cathedrals Express" always pulled by a "Castle"

    • @MarshSteamVideosTM

Because the train was coming back from llandudno and it's is a dead end terminus and there is no run around option.
