The scene with the woman putting her children to bed and reading them stories as the ship goes down is absolutely heart crushing and devastating and hits me hard as well as that of the elderly couple holding onto each other, thinking about the love they shared together their entire lives.
This is not a movie for the faint-hearted.

I agree. Maybe because the movie has been etched into a core memory for me as I first saw it at 6 years old but I don't think I've seen anything more profoundly sad since then in movies

There are so many things in this movie that seem like they were put in for dramatic effect, but were based in reality. The priest who was praying while the final sinking was happening, the guy in baker's whites swigging from his flask next to Jack and Rose while they were going down, even the shooting. And yes, survivors said that they heard the band playing Nearer My God To Thee minutes before she went under. All of that was taken from actual accounts of the survivors.

The musicians of the Titanic all died when the ship sank in 1912. They played music, intending to calm the passengers, for as long as they possibly could, and all went down with the ship. All of the men were recognized for their heroism, especially during the final hours of the sinking.
After the Titanic hit an iceberg and began to sink, Hartley and his fellow band members started playing music to help keep the passengers calm as the crew loaded the lifeboats. Many of the survivors said that Hartley and the band continued to play until the very end.
Reportedly, their final tune was the hymn "Nearer, My God, to Thee❤"

When TITANIC was in cinema in Australia I went to watch it with some friends. There was a lovely young Danish lady there all alone in the foyer. I asked her if she was waiting for anybody to see the film with. She wasn't as she was backpacking alone around Australia. I invited her to join me so she could have some company during the movie as it didn't seem right for a lady to sit all alone with nobody for company.
It was an emotional movie and it was wonderful to share it with another person. I dropped her off at the bus station afterwards and never saw her again. Strangely enough, I think about this moment I shared with a complete stranger so many years ago. Despite not even remembering her name, she has a permanent place in my memories. This song reminds me of a snapshot in time when I was a younger man, sharing a beautiful moment with a beautiful woman who I would never see again.

I can't take that scene. It just devastates me. A mother's love and protective instinct for her children knows no bounds even if the outcome is inevitable, at the very least she must make them feel safe and secure as you said. These men's calmness in the midst of the sinking ship is a demonstration of inner peace, which passes all understanding that only Jesus Christ can give.
Just like Apostle Paul, they knew whom they believed in, and they are persuaded that he is able to keep that which they have committed unto him against the day.

The band was from Broken Hill in Australia - it was the biggest lead mine in the world from the 1880s to the 1900s. There is a memorial in Sturt Park commemorating this band.

This was the saddest part of this epic movie to me. I cry like a baby each time I see this part of titanic. Feels like I was in there. This hymn hits different each time. It’s from titanic I connected with this hymn, it don’t matter wherever I find myself 😢. I just start to self reflect on my life.
To all lives lost in the titanic tragedy in 1912, May your sweet souls continue to Rest easy

When watching disaster films, it's easy to think to yourself:
    "It's only a movie. This isn't real"
This movie is no exception. BUT then you remember: This happened for real! This was a real tragedy in which 1,503 men, women and children died. Everybody and their grandmother weeps over Jack's death. But seeing the Strauses in bed and the mother tucking in her children as the ship sinks, that shit gets me every time.
