Great video Over a Pipe. Thanks again for sharing the cleaning info. Question for you on the pipe freshner. I have hesitated to use the Iwan Reis or this kind as I was worried about the "sweetened" taste it would depart and how that would affect my smokes for VAs or English blends (not really worried about AROs). Does this impact your smoke much and how long does it tend to last? Have a great week. Happy smokes and take care.

      Andrew Cirigliano,
That’s a great question and thank you for the comment. So it’s very much an alcohol and wintergreen flavor. Gives it an almost menthol aroma. I use this because I use a harsh high proof alcohol to sanitize my pipes. The flavoring dries and is nearly undetectable after its left to sit a couple of days. I would say try a couple or use an alcohol with a flavor you enjoy. It’s been my experience that the sweeter the alcohol the better the taste and fragrance. The higher the proof the more you will smell the harshness of the burnt tobacco. I call it the wet dog effect. Your dog or pet usually doesn’t smell nearly as bad until they get wet. The only way to really clear the pipe is salt and alcohol & a retort.

I forgot is it salt then reamer? How about a way to better reach out to you. I was working on an estate pipe reamed it and it has a burn spot in the bowl. It’s a thick bowl but am wondering how to protect it now that all the carbon is gone?

I saw in a video we're someone made cement from old tobacco Ash and rubbed it in the bowl over the spot. Let it dry then smoke.

      Mel Harris,
      Typing Piper is spot on.
I would do that as well Aristcob also has what’s called pipe mud. Really though a burn mark, could show a light weakness in the bowl and potentially have a burnout. But, the best thing I wouldn’t say is to slowly build that cake up. Where is the buses spot exactly?

      Mel Harris,
Yes you want to do the salt after reaming. Once you start seeing briar wood, salt bath. Let it sit 24 hours.

The spot is about half way down the bowl maybe a 1/16 deep.

      Mel Harris,
I would then go ahead and do the salt alcohol treatment and see if there are any leaks on the bowl. That will let you know if there is any breach already. Then I would smoke a small amount in the bowl right below it. Try to take some of then fine ash and dump it on a plate or in a bowl. Then mix it with water. Once you have cleaned your pipe out. Put some of that mixture in the hole. Smooth it out and let it dry.

The pipe with the flaw in the bowl turned out to weep a very small spot on the out side of the briar. Can it be salvaged with just ash!

      Mel Harris,
I would still smoke it. I would putty it with a very this layer of fine wet ash. Then I would pack a little bit of tobacco right below that spot and allow smoke and heat to work on that thin layer of wet ash. I would repeat that process until it’s got a good little cake and make sure not to scrape out anything on that spot. Pipes with weak spots like that take some work, but are still smokable. Again that’s how I did it. Now I’m sure there is a way easier way and I would reach out to a few others as well that might actually put some wood putty in there. I’ve seen all sorts of repairs. I never give up on a pipe until it is unsmokeable.

Bourdain created the term food porn, you sir may have created pipe cleaning porn. Do you have a buffing wheel or go old school with a cloth? Nice pipe, I haven't come across a Peterson yet.

      Typing Piper,
Ha ha ha no buffing wheel as of yet. I use a belt sander for my stems and then would use a budding wheel for the waxing part and the bowls, but until then it’s just a cloth when I have the time.

@@overapipe1121 don't k ow if I would use a belt sander for stems but looking forward to using my buffing wheel once I get it out of storage.

      Typing Piper,
You definitely want to use an ultra fine grit belt with a very low speed. I use it mostly for removing the oxidation from my stems. The buffing will with the wax though is stuff pipe dreams are made of. ;)
