  • Dr. Craig Richard, university professor and researcher, explains the curious phenomenon of Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR). He highlights the rising popularity of ASMR videos, why these videos are so calming, and how these videos are helping millions of individuals around the world to relax, reduce their stress, and fall asleep more easily.
    His journey to understand ASMR includes being co-author of the first ASMR brain scan study, coordinator of the largest ASMR database, author of the book ‘Brain Tingles’, founder of the website ‘ASMRUniversity.com’, host of the ASMR podcast ‘Sleep Whispers’, and consultant for the first ASMR Super Bowl commercial.
    His research and interest in ASMR have been featured by ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, CNN, Al Jazeera, NPR, Associated Press, NY Times, Washington Post, Boston Globe, Newsweek, The New Yorker, Scientific American, Women’s Health, Rolling Stone, and The Today Show.
    Dr. Richard is currently a professor of biopharmaceutical sciences at the Bernard J Dunn School of Pharmacy at Shenandoah University in Virginia. Full bio: asmruniversity...

I'm also on medication for high blood pressure and have been asked by my doctor to check my BP daily...If it's elevated on any rsndom day, I've found that just 5 min of viewing an ASMR video can bring it down by 15-30 points!!!(mmHg)... as good or better than the effects I've personally experienced from yoga and meditation.... and it works faster!

    Just want to point out that ASMR isn't necessarily triggered by _any_ kind of personal attention. I used to experience it all the time (don't know why the scalp tingles have stopped happening), and it would be caused just by certain sounds, usually in a quiet setting. E.g., I used to work in a very quiet office where a guy who sat about 20 feet away would sometimes eat at his desk, and the quiet chewing sounds would trigger my tingles.

I used to need things like melatonin, benadryl, all kinds of different sleeping pills. Now i just use this to fall asleep. I have always experienced Asmr, and often could never describe it to people who could understand what I was saying. I'm guessing they never experienced it, so what I was describing sounded so weird to them. I never felt the brain tingles... however, I knew something was unique with me when I watched Mr. Roger's Neighborhood as a kid or Sewing with Nancy on PBS and I would touch my skin lightly with a pencil or pen. I was on the hunt to know what this was about me. I found Maria(Gentlewhispering) in 2011 and was glued to her videos. Now I follow hundreds of ASMR artists. • @SweetFernFairy

    I think science is going to have a hard time with this one since we haven’t fully embraced the abstract information behind things he mentioned like stress, yoga, meditation, etc. I personally believe that the mention of “meridians” in the name ASMR is the key; this mysterious response is linked with the same energy channels as the meridians in Eastern medicine. Perhaps ASMR will provide us with the link between the Eastern and Western schools of thought on the healing power of the body and medicine. I also want to point out that, as many of you probably know, ASMR doesn’t have to come strictly from “personal attention.” I think it’s important to include that in the information. A person at the other end of the aisle at the grocery store crinkling a bag, or the soft clicking of someone’s high heels through a small shop, or someone a few computers down at the library tapping on the keyboard can all trigger the tingles sensation. If we’re going to do this, let’s do it right! I’m thrilled some research is finally being done and I can’t wait to see what we learn! Happy tingles, everyone!

    • @mbrewer421
      @mbrewer421 4 роки тому +2

  • @m.walford
    @m.walford 4 роки тому +1

    Except I often experience it from people who are unaware of my existence in their world, someone in a library on the next table studying, so how is that positive personal attention? I think maybe more experimentation is required before absolute theories are expounded.

    • @evanguffey507
      @evanguffey507 4 роки тому

    The first time I experienced ASMR was 25-30 years ago in kindergarten , some girl whispered in my ear and said she liked my crayons and asked to borrow some. I'll never forget that. I would get it with teachers, doctors, hair dressers you name it, then these ASMR videos came out. I hated them at first, I felt like we shouldn't use ASMR like a drug and that it should be earned through real life experience instead of getting it whenever you want. But gotta be honest, it helps my anxiety and it helps me sleep. It works. We as a species have tapped into it and harnessed it.

    Despite seldom getting tingles, I love ASMR videos. I follow 2 of the featured artists. I often can't sleep until I turn on UA-cam autoplay (I have premium, so no worries about ads), and just listen.

    I wonder how many people actively listen to ASMR who don't actually experience the ASMR feeling that's it's all about

    okay, one slide with some brain scans and two little scientific research bits? not a lot for all the claims. it would be good to see more in depth research information and less show. and what about that steve jobs bit in the end? ;) yours sincerely, grumpy man :P

    ASMR is such an interesting phenomenon. I hope to see more research studies about this topic in the future. 🤓💡

    Wouldn’t it be great if he whispered and fluttered his fingers whilst he delivered the ted talk?! I mean let’s be honest most of us are here because we watch so much ASMR is came up as recommended, it would just be considerate

    I didn’t feel the tingles in my brain but in my stomach, not sure if that’s important or good or bad or whatever. Just wanted to share this and if you maybe know anything about this, you can tell me what is going on...

    I appreciate ASMR so much!! The anxiety that builds up when you have an overactive mind before bedtime can be debilitating. I don't need to go into detail as to how it can get but plugging in my headphones and listening to Maria (gentle whispering) or any other ASMRtist and their gentle kindness melts it all away. Truly suggest giving it a try. There's many different scenarios even just sounds with no talking. Don't why away just because most TV programs only show mouth sounds or eating sounds. I detest those. Really look into it and you might find that you like crispy or watery sounds.

    I 1st experienced ASMR when I was 4 or 5 with my grandmother.
    She had the same effect on me as Bob Ross did on so many people, so I always put it down to my grandmother 'activating' my ASMR.
    I got stuff to think about now 👍🏻
