Thank you, I appreciate your sharing your knowledge and giving of your time.
I'm up there in age, quite new to chickens... been interested for years. A rental car under my arse, some free time, and noticing it was Thursday morning, chicken delivery day at my local feed store, I swung on in.
Living in the burbs here I'd already contacted the county to ask how many chickens I was allowed... seven.
I walked in, walked to the back where chicks are... chickens are kept... and noticed they had Rhode Island Reds, the brand, (newbie), I'd been interested in.
"How many Reds do you have?" (looking back, right there she should have counted them one by one for me lol"
    "Nine"
"Great, I'll take eight, please." (An adrenaline shot to my body, living on the edge with the government. A real scofflaw!)
My next question, "What do I need today to keep them alive for two weeks?" I figured two weeks would give me enough time to research chickens NOT on a menu.
You're in luck, my dogs want out... or I could keep going.
I could talk to a fence post.
    Thanks again!

I've been experimenting with brooding the chicks right in the stress-free chicken tractor. I add bedding, an igloo style dog house where they can get out of the wind, and a few heat lamps. With this last batch of 30 red rangers, now 4 weeks old, I only lost 1, which was a much smaller, exotic breed that the hatchery threw into the mix

Thank you for the timely information.
I was about to set my 8 week old chicks in an outdoor coop in Vermont. But I will wait for drier weather.

Great information, thank you very much. We have 40 Cornish Cross day old coming on the 26th of May in Southern Ontario Canada (near Detroit). These are our first meat pastured birds, so this is a learning experience. If it works out, we will be doing another 40 in late July. We currently have laying hens, but definately need to stock up our freezer.

I bought a Cozy Coop heater, just because we use pine chips and I worry about fire.

ours are about 2 weeks old now and we finally started taking them outside in a pen I built in the grass so they can enjoy the warm sunlight for a few hours every day. I know it has to stink to be in the brooder box in the basement all the time.

I did the same I have a a dog cannel fence it’s perfect and I can move it around real easy mine are 2 weeks Yule and Elfi and 3 weeks Heidi, and I only take them outside for a few hours outside temperature 85 F
They so happy flapping their little wings.
I use Hamp pet bedding for the first time and I like it. And it does not smell for a while but today I chanced it. I changed it every week but I only have 3 chicken.
I cut some regular grass in little pieces since they a week old
      Chicken are so much fun

we've just started bringing them out at 15 days old and are comfortable doing so without a pen because we've been working on recall since they hatched, they don't get out of arms reach much of the time, but if they do they come right back when we call their names. Looks like they're enjoying the garden and grass.

I think of it like this: There is nothing warmer than wearing fleece under a wind breaker / rain coat. That is why birds are so cold hardy.

Great info well presented as always, thank you. I'm moving my first run of 55 quail out of the brooder soon and we just had unseasonal snow and hailstones today! It would undoubtedly have been too much for them. You've certainly got to go with a mix of your gut instinct and a really good study of the weather reports for sure. Keep up the excellent work and awesome uploads. All the best from unseasonal Scotland.

Well, I could have used this advise a couple days ago. Although I'm sure it was in your books that I have. I put 114 birds out to pasture on Wednesday that were (Cornish Cross) over 3 weeks old. The next morning, it rained much harder than I expected it to, there was about an inch of rain running through the tractors with no way for the chicks to get out of it. While it rained, I frantically tried to get them out of it by providing a platform. By the end of the day, 37 birds had died. 😣

Same thing happened to me. I put a batch of 25 Cornish X out and it stormed and hailed that night. I ran out there while dodging lightning and spread wood chips in the pen so they could get up off the wet ground. I only ended up losing one fortunately. I’ll pay more attention to the weather from now on!

John I had a question about your chicken tractor: I was thinking about a 1 foot length hinged fencing that could go around the perimeter of the chicken tractor as an alternative to the electric wire to keep predators out. Something that could fold up when you move the chicken tractor to fresh pasture. An extra foot of hardware cloth on the ground should be sufficient to keep predators from trying to dig underneath the chicken tractor...

I tried to do this by putting down the welded wire fence material. It would have been better to mount it with a hinge and strings with pulley to lift it from the moving position. Thanks

Hi good. I've recently started my own poultry depot and I raise my own chickens, i dont buy chickens from wholesalers. My question is do you give them any worm out medication? Or does the exposure to them eating grass helps? And if giving them grass is good, when is the best time to give them? I currently raise them in 2 cages under inside a shed, holding max 48 chickens...I believe I made a mistake by reusing old litter from the previous patch...

    • @littlewillowhomestead113
      @littlewillowhomestead113 5 років тому +2

Tomfern Jerrypita I would never reuse old litter and DE is a good thing to add to feed for worms.. I’ve never had worms in my meat birds
