- Today was the day that our little chicks moved out of their brooder and in to their new chicken coop. They're four weeks old and were running out of room in their brooder.

I have 11 chicks in my sewing room. They are in a portable dog play pen. It’s completely enclosed with netting all around so they can see out. They have little doors. You can zip up or down and I just sit on the floor and let them come out and play all over the place but they usually just hang out with me. Completely socialized. My sewing room is very dusty, so I’m looking forward to putting them outside but it’s too cold yet. I love your coop. It’s very nice. Sharing!

Mine are 6 weeks old today, and still shiver without their heat lamp. I might be living with them till they are laying eggs at this rate (they're in my room) lol
My kids did a great job socializing our chicks when they were young. It makes a huge difference as they get older. Love the coop build and the roosting sand tray.
I agree. Mine live in my room with me and come out everyday to socialize with humans. They like sitting on my shoulder. I wouldn't mind but I don't want any droppings down my back lol
You’ve probably learned this trick already, but just thought I would mention this. When I need to move my chicks, I usually place my one hand in front of them and then nudge them forward from behind so that they perch onto my hand and then I can easily lift them and place them in a plastic tub when moving them to my outdoor coup. I find that the chicks are much more relaxed when moving them this way, rather than grabbing them from above
Very nice coop you have there. Next time you moove chicks, turn off the light, they stop moving and you can just pick them up easy.

Cut an opening on the side and put your carrier up to it. No picking up necessary.

You can't hold your hands out and expect the babies to gingerly land on them. However, if you had socialized them as chicks, they wouldn't have a heart attack when you approach them.
Levi Radford It's funny now that they're grown up, they barely move out of my way when I'm feeding or cleaning the coop and run.
Pete B. - Adult chickens are much more docile than chicks. Chicks must be socialized constantly throughout their 'childhood' to remain calm during that stage. Of course, with minimal interaction, adults can be very docile. My criticism is not personal - you can raise your chickens how you want.

@@lukesmith9868 it's easy :) handle them daily just pick them up and talk to them. Ours are now 3 weeks old and they hop into the cat box we have by themselves cause they have learned that they get to spend some time outside when the sun is shining :). they see us as chick mum
@@lukesmith9868 You can also pet their backs often. They naturally hate this, but can get used to it over time.

I held my chicks everyday and hand fed them. Now I have chickens that follow me around and don't bock too much being held.

Oh Wow, watching you trying to catch them... shows me my imprinting of our New Hampshires pays off!! My chicks (11 & 1 rooster), come to me when I make the noise I taught them. And I talk to them, greet them so they know my voice & they love being held. (At 4 weeks old, the rooster decided he didn't want held anymore but he stands close to me & I'll pet him, which he likes).
So different to see your chicks scared to death of your hands vs mine hop up on my hands & arms. They love eating out of my hands too.
This is my 5th flock, (I'm 61 y/o) but I also helped raise ours as a kid too.
Im going to be raising Cross Cornish in a few months but I won't be imprinting them as they don't stay very long. I'm just imprinting the Layers & hoping they reproduce.

I keep coming across videos where people were able to put their chicks out by week four. I had to wait until week 7 but I think that's due to the fact they were born in September and it's getting colder rather than warmer. They are finally out in the coop and I'm glad to have my garage back! I have been socializing with them since day one and they are almost 'lap' chickens LOL!
I feel ya on this one - only 4-5 more weeks for me. I love my chicks but I’ll be glad when they get their own place. 😂

My 8 chick's are 3 weeks old. I hold them everyday. They are getting their wings and can fly up to the lip on the trough. I love them. It's April here in Colorado so it's cool to see I can put them out in another week or so. They are in my back bedroom.

We interacted with our from day one. At 5 weeks old they look forward to being held.
They are quickly learning their and each others name.

How do u interact with your chicks because I tried to hand feed them as chicks but my barred rocks always seem to run from me

@@herewegoagain7141 Barred rocks are not that social from what I’ve seen, but you could probably make them social. One of the friendliest breeds I’ve had was easter eggers
Nice coop
we hold our chicks twice a day and make sure all 16 get some time. In our past experience, if you don't spend time with them, they stress very easily. You look like you have the same breeds as i do now. they love to come and see us and spend time with us. Very friendly chickens, unlike previous flocks that we basically ignored compared to these we have now. Nice lookin birds.
Henhouse looks nice,but it's much easier to get them in the dark or use a brooder that you can carry into the coop without all the trauma.

I was gifted a chicken coup, a rooster and a hen last summer. We bought a 10x 10 dog kennel and put coup in that We live in Ohio and have this survived the winter this far with thick bedding and tarps. We intend to get 4 hens in the next few weeks. Thanks for your video and your coup is wonderful! such lucky birds. ANY TIPS PLEASE. * We had a possum get in the kennel the other night !

Get a Ruger air hawk elite from Walmart, $107 for the gun and $7 for about 400 pellets. Took out a large woodchuck today.

If you handle the chicks when they are small, grabbing them to transport isn't so arduous.
I know ☹ I didn't handle them enough during the first few weeks.
My thoughts precisely. I have mine to to point now where they actually come perch on my hand lol. Probably because i only gave them treats when they came and got them from my hands.

This is crazy. When I go to my chicks brooder (3 weeks old) they come right to me. Jump up on the edge and walk into my hand. I also handle them daily. Have a call when I give them treats. And bring them outside for an hour or two a day.
My chicks are 2 weeks old and they actually walk up me and want me to pick them up. They are very social and they like to stay close to me
yes ours too, you have to get them used to that while they are young...we also took them outside in a little pen for a few hours every afternoon to scratch in the dirt and be in the sun between the ages of 2 weeks and 4 weeks. They came to love being picked up bc it meant they'd get to experience that! :) When they took little dust baths at that time it was the most adorable thing. Accustoming them to this makes it so much easier later when you need to round them up for whatever reason throughout their lives. They can even grow to love to be cuddled :)

It might help to cut a little door into the box so chicks can just walk into the transfer box.
Why do the chicks insist on putting the pine bark in their water and their food
I ask my chickens now why they get their water dirty after I change it with dirt and poop 💩 I guess they're just dumb birds.
I just thought maybe there was some reason for it , like maybe the taste the pine bark gives the water
Chickens naturally have Instinct scratch it just clicks the pine shavings in there when they are scratching around thinking they're looking for bugs
No need to cover up the nesting boxes. All chickens will at some point poop in their nesting boxes. My former chickens used to roost at times their nesting boxes especially when the weather got colder, and yes, they would poop in the nesting boxes! I just would clean everything including the nesting material and put all in the compost pile.
Turn the light off and close the door for a few minutes before catching them. They go to sleep and are easy to catch without stressing them.
We are moving our 14 chicks today and I suspect catching them is going to be an experience! 🤣
How much space horizontally and vertically did you put between each roost?
Very nice job on the finishing touches! Is that timer like the ones they have on aquariums that slowly dim at night like a sunset? Those eggs are going to taste fantastic!
Thank you, the timer is just a regular 24 hour timer I purchased at Lowes, I'll have to look into the dimmable timers. Yes I can't wait to taste those eggs, we are currently buying organic pastured eggs now and they do look and taste much better then regular eggs but very expensive.
I never used those timers, but I used to have a salt water aquarium and did research on stuff like that before the internet. Fish are easily stressed so the slow dimming supposedly helped them. I buy my eggs from a lady at work who keeps hens and the difference in flavor with farm fresh eggs is very noticeable to me. No brainer at $3.00 a dozen and no coop to clean!

Add a door to your crate so they can walk in. Less stressful for chicks
They sell long handle scoops at pet store make that job easier
nice video. i got chicks 4 weeks ago and they got used to us the first 2 weeks. they sleep on me and jump up onto my leg to stand or lay down.
It's good that you get them used to you handling them so they don't get too freaked out when you have to pick them up.

Ricks Vids Thank you, you need a minimum of about 2.5 square feet per bird in the coop and I'm at 2.4 My run is about 250 square feet and that's about minimum for 15 birds.

Quick question I have 12 chicks and will be putting them in a 6’x5’ coop and a 12x8 run will the coop size be to small for 12 Rhode Island reds? I also have 2 roosting sticks close to the setup you have just one is 71” long and the other is 46” long. Great video!
That should be okay but I wouldn't put more than 15 chickens in the coop. Also you might want to expand the run a little bigger in the future. I built a 10'x24' run for 15 chickens.

How did they do at that age on the chilly nights below 50°? I have chicks that are almost 6 weeks old and I want to move them outdoors, but there are a couple days when the temperatures dip down into the 30s but during the day it’s well above 50°, even 70°+ on a few days.
At 6 weeks old they should have most of their feathers and 30s should not be a problem as long as they are out of the wind.
Hi how are your chicks doing now? Mine are probably 4 or 5 weeks but we still have them in the house at least 65-75 degrees. You didn’t have problems moving outside?

How big was the box you were keeping them in? How long did you keep them in the the box before putting them in the chicken pen? Thank you very much
The box was 3'x4' and you should keep them in there until they're about 3 to 4 weeks old. They should have all or most of there feathers by then.

Take a piece of plywood or stiff cardboard and corral them in one corner.
Next time you catch some chickens shut the light off it's easier to catch a chicken at night they can't see flat easier for you to catch them

Use some paper towel under the shavings, it’s easier to clean and the babies won’t slip and get that spread eagle thing.

Do you still like the Sand for the roost area?
Yes it works great if you have roost bars that size for less then 15 birds.
The only thing I would mention about sand, it doesn't keep the heat in the winter and freezes their droppings solid. With wood chips, it creates a compost like heat and keeps the coop warmer. 🤷♀️

Oh my gosh this guy did not handle these chickens at all when they were little they are so scared and he has no idea how to pick them up I'm moving slowly up on them then just snacking them fast and holding over their wings he's going to give them all heart attacks!!! Poor chicks! Then throwing them all into a super kennel will give them splay leg and crippled them for life
