For Whom the Bell Tolls Kirk has a "Repeated solo" that would fit your scale.
its not repeated as if its twice or more times in a song
That's a riffy solo imho
I think Kirk's lead for Where The Wild Things Are fits in the repeated solo aspect
I love this video idea so much and I’m loving it so far!
Thank you!
I often call breakdowns (at least the older style of breakdowns) "rhythm solos", if that counts. They're riffs that usually fill the same space as a solo, but with a focus on rhythm and timing as opposed to melody.
Kiko Loureiro's previous band, Angra, has all those categories. Their album Temple of Shadows would be a good example, with songs like Spread Your Fire and The Temple of Hate, both songs with some of Loureiro's most insane guitar works.
I hope that someday some youtuber stumbles upon this album and makes it blow up
@@lucasgraeff5391 first time I heard Kiko’s playing was back in 2003. One year later Angra released Temple of Shadows, which was the album that made me like the band. But as a Brazilian knowing their music since I was very young was part of the metal scene I was kinda into. Sadly outside Brazil people still don’t know guys like Felipe Andreoli and his insane bass playing as well as they know Kiko, now.
fuck what a topic to explore great stuff @Andriy been a fan of your channel for a while lol
Really appreciate it! Almost scrapped the video because couldn’t cover all the flavours of that.
Static x has a few, examples include "the only" "invincible and "dirthouse" even korn has one song where its blurred as well, in there song "liar"
“The Final Countdown” is also a good example of a repeated solo, since pretty much the whole solo gets repeated. Also Opeth are gods of long riffs: Deliverance, Ghost of Perdition, Blackwater Park…
I was hoping to find I Disappear on this video. Its solo is a bit riffed.
Same for The Outlaw Torn final solo, the main leak repeats many times.
Children of Bodom. They have plenty of songs with leads and harmonies that are kinda riffs at the same time. Songs like Hate Me!; Needled 24/7; Are You Dead Yet?; Bed of Razors; Downfall, etc.
Exactly. On their early albums the borders between soloing and riffing were very open. Bodom After Midnight is a great example, the whole song is basically a set of riffs ending with solo licks.
Yeah. Prime example is Kissing the Shadows, especially the chorus
the black dahlia murder blurs the line between riffs and solos all the time, kings of the nightworld is a great example
Was kind of hoping for Now That We're Dead to be mentioned. It has a cool sort of Outlaw Torn-esque section after Kirk's solo that blends the riff with lead guitar.
Rex Brown does a lot of "soloing" under pantera guitar solos, sorta being lead riffs
Smart bass playing in 1 guitar bands. Bassists in these bands have a great set of skills.
'soli' comes from the Italian grammar and is the correct term when speaking about classical interpretation (which was also the word that the Merriam Webster was describing), meanwhile solos is the correct word for the contemporary meaning of it - in metal, jazz, rock and other genres \m/
Exactly. The word "hero" comes from Greek and "solo" from Italian.
One of the most creative video ideas I have ever seen.
I’d say Iron Maiden has the riffy leads you’re looking for.
I absolutely think about Maiden when it comes to things in between riffs and solos!
TRAPPED UNDER ICE IS A PERFECT LEAD RIFF
Hm, isn't Battery an example of song with repeated solo with Kirk's mini solos in between verses right after James repeats the word battery?
good to see you on my recommened again love ya man stay strong
Nice one Andriy, hope you and the family are well.
Very good video.
I never thought to hear on your channel my favorite song of all time from my favorite band of all time (as I lay dying - the sound of truth)
Great video!! Happy and safe holidays to you and the family 🤘
Thank you! Happy holidays to you too \m/
I hear the short solo sounding parts get called lead breaks sometimes like it's jazz, for purely shredding instrumental songs like Speed Metal Symphony where there actually isn't a single riff it makes sense
Cool video!
"Solo" is Italian for "Alone", that's why plural is "Soli".
I always thought about this. Cool topic
My subtle propaganda of trrue riffs 👀
Tech Death bands like Archapire play Riffos 😂
Liked the vid after what you said about Polyphia.
Thats all you need by Faces has some riffing in the middle but its bluesy and seemingly improvised.
I feel that an excellent subject of focus on this topic would be Megadeth's Tornado of Souls, especially in the bridge section.
If you take each part of the song on its own, it feels like the bridge parts between solos are a harmonic 'solo-ish riff', but because of its placement and accompaniment in the rhythm once the upper lead harmonization starts, it feels less like a riff and more like a solo-preamble that jumps up from that main riff below, as if hanging on it and preparing to swing into the solo itself.
Of course, I could be thinking too hard, and Iron Maiden also has plenty of neat examples when you get into harmonizing lead parts, but that's another can of worms; all in all, there's a definite difference between a riff and a solo and a lick, but it's fascinating to me (as a musician by hobby) that half of that difference lies in what the rest of the band is doin'. Neat stuff.
Some songs in "Temple Of Shadows" make me think "wtf is it suppose to be? Solo or riff?" 😂
_Note: Angra was the band of the ex-Megadeth Kiko Loureiro. Really good guitar work!_
Thanks 😊
;-)
Sebastiside's projects, in whatever form (full on songs/albums/his youtube shorts) all stay in the "grey" area of riff/solo
The solos in Hook In Mouth are the song's chorus. Super unique.
Regurlrly 😂love it
In "The Krochik" from Ricardo Iorio, there's a lead riff at the beginning
I really like your new channel icon who made it?
Cool facial hair! The thicker moustache looks good on you!
9:03 Yes! AILD! That album rips!
I watch your vids regulagalooooruyrlley !
For me, a good exemplo os solo that sounds like a riff, or the "Riffy Lead", would be the James's final solo on The Outlaw Torn, because it is technically a solo but realllllllly repetitive and sounds a lot improvisated
It’s like accent gets thicker and thicker
Isn't Disposable Héroes Pre-chorus somewhat of a repeated solo? I always thought it was like Hook In Mouth
Riffy lead is certainly Kirks intro part in For whom the bell tolls.
I feel the categories are well selected, however, I think switching „Long Riff Melody“ with „Riffy Lead“ would work better. Reason is that the former is a melody and hence more solo-Like than riff-like, and the latter is more about riffs. But of course, debatable … 😊
none comes to mind, pero solos made of power chords i think could be found in early punk rock, i think, idk
yes you are correct. now write more music for us to listen to. your music is very good
My brother in christ. Bell Tolls, the "riffy solo" of kirk in the intro. It is basically a riff structure, played as a solo and has its own moment to shine, it's basically a riffy solo, isn't it?
Riffy lead from Metallica gotta be James’ solo from Outlaw Torn
Riff solo...floods by pantera
James solo in outlaw torn is half solo half riff
A solo that mixes solo parts with riffy parts that comes to my mind is that of "Wanted Dead Or Alive" by Bon Jovi.
ua-cam.com/video/SRvCvsRp5ho/v-deo.html
Repeated solo: NIB- Black Sabbath.
I Disappear solo has to be the best riffy lead example. At least from what I know haha
I like the new format. Finally some video without Metallica on your channel.
I’ve got a Metallica riddle for you:
If:
One + Orion = Ronnie
All Nightmare Long + No Remorse = Nothing Else Matters
Then:
Escape + Don’t Tread On Me + Attitude = ?
Ride The Lightning + Hardwired + Atlas Rise = ?
Shoot Me Again + Slither = ?
The Outlaw Torn + Cure + Slither + Metal Militia = ?
I respectfully disagree because a solo can be as iconic as a riff! Stairway to Heaven, Sultan of Swing, Beat it, Another Brick in the Wall, Hotel California, Tornado of Souls, Mister Crowley... Shall I go on? 😉🤟😎
Great video!
9:03 My favourite example of this, is definitely the post intro riff of Seven by Symphony X ua-cam.com/video/VIDLvhq6BWk/v-deo.html
Or maybe it is considered a repped solo? ;)
The first solo in Master Of Puppets is repeated
I really like your videoes, but I have one complaint. Your videoes normally have an ecco to them. Is it your mic, or is it something else? I can not to anything about your pronounciation :) Love ya
Ah yes, I love gen z virtuoso rifolos
I thought the thumbnail said risotto
where was leper messiah😢
Licks
is it a riff? a solo? a hook? a chorus, a bridge, an interlude, an introduction, a crashendo? music theory is laborious and kind of pointless so i like to ask "does it sound good"? and if i does sound good and it moves people, labels can only weigh it down like baggage when they are associated with the emotions and stigmas related to the labels we put on the music, and it can turn it into something else entirely, for better or for worse.
I thought Maiden is solo'ing with 2 guitarists. Not a solo then?
Well, most "solos" have accompaniment from other instruments - drums, bass, etc. Not to mention "solo" albums aren't done by one person either. The term isn't meant to be taken that literally, Maiden or otherwise.
I just wanted to let you know that you are being paid by Metallica for this video. I got the ad for the Metallica Yousician course before this video and I let it play through so you would get the money.
13:00
bruh. That is not a riff. That's a goddamn intro solo with power chords under it. Smdh... 🤦🏼♂️not to mention he broke the rules. Used more than the first 4 frets. Where the riff!?!
