I saw Mr. Bruford performing in a very small venue on the campus of Wayne State University in Detroit. It was called “Alvin’s”. He was on David Torn’s Cloud About Mercury tour in 1987. I wonder if he recalls playing there. The place was so small I was so close to the stage. Thrilled beyond belief that I was seeing a giant. Mr. Bruford still remains my favorite drummer ever!

Got to see the Master with Moraz and Union tour. ❤ missed beat tour in 82.
But along with Jaco and metheny and Fripp and Eno and Gabriel and Collins, he been a musician I follow as much as possible.
Great to hear he touring again. ❤

So much great info's in this Interview. Thank you very much! In my youth, my fist Album was Seconds Out from Genesis. My first question was: Who was this drummer? Who? ...audibly different from Collins.. . wow... That was my hour of birth to love this kind of music. Yes, KC, UK, ABWH.
    Best regards from germany🎉

Been a fan since the early 70's. But I only had the privilege of hearing Bill perform live once on November 17, 1995 at the Paramount Theatre in Springfield, MA. He was playing with Crim to support the Thrak release. It was a lovely evening at a small venue which had a wonderful sound & everyone had a great time. Thank you for the music! Live long!

I intended the Thrak tour, but also some Eathworks gig, both were absolutely great.

Great and insightful interview. I remember when I first heard Dr Bruford playing 1st on Yessongs and then on Lark's tongues in Aspic. I really enjoyed his unique style and had to research and hear my of this brilliant drummer. I loved his unmistakable style. He then became my favorite drummer and I would purposely look for anything with his name on it and follow his musical adventures. Then my best friend and I started going to his shows in the NYC area especially the Bottom Line. We've been been a faithful follower since the 70's. He is an original and one of a kind. Never boring. A lot of drummers would get so boring and repetitious when soloing. Not Bill. His solos were always refreshing and innovative. Thanks Bill for a lifetime of great music and thrills.

First heard him with Genesis at Hammersmith Odeon in 76. Going to hear him at Wavendon in January. Can't wait.

Great interview. I've been a fan since 1971 or 72 and aside from school band, learned to play by trying to emulate Bruford, Collins and White, followed later by others. It's curious to me I've never heard Bill talk about the solo years (Feels Good to Me, etc.) or the one album with UK. Given his respect for Allan Holdsworth and Jeff Berlin, this is surprising. Anyway, my favorite drummer ever, by a mile. Thanks for posting.

Hello! Guess who found the first UK LP in great condition- for 95¢ - $1.95 & it'd been SIGNED BY ALLAN HOLDSWORTH & JOHN WETTON in Ball Point Pen & slightly fading so, I caught up w/Allan & Chad & got a bunch of great Autographs (&/or touch ups/replacement Signings by Holdsworth & Chad re AH's & ZAPPA's stuff during load in & watched the gear as they carried their own. The best thing for Chad (& Allan) as they knew that was the best thing for All: post FZ; for Chad it had to be w/Allan's Trios Live &/or if in Studio work as FZ said he listened to Allan Holdsworth! What could be better for the non chain smokers in that bunch of 3‽ Chad could be the best thing for RUSH IF NOT ALONE, THEN LIKE YES' Union Tour (White & Bill/Bill & White depending on what Group & original version. I'm thinking Bozzio & Chad OR Chad & Vinnie C w/o BECK now. What're Geddy & Alex doin'- playing w/themselves?

In his autobiography, Bill said that he was too jazz for rock, and too rock for jazz as if that were a bug, whereas in fact it’s a feature.

The comments on his favorite concerts were so enthralling to listen to (even though it's funny that he presaged them with "not for the reasons you probably think" because the reasons were exactly what I would have thought). He just recreates the scene beautifully.

Bill Bruford is being so modest here..."look up" Waiting Man? It's being played around the country at this very moment on the Beat tour. It's enjoying the limelight like never before. I would love to know if Bill has seen the Beat tour, and what he thinks of it!

So, if I look for a good drumkit for my recording studio and I opt for Tama, it should be the Starclassic Bubinga thing?
Note that I have heard some highly ear candy stuff from oter brands like DW and Odery as well as a great vintage sounding Gretsch kit
