- Hi all 👋 I took what I felt was a much needed break last week as I felt a bit burnt out from video editing… so I thought I’d ease myself into our renovation project by doing this easy DIY plasterboard hack to repair large ceiling holes.
I think even beginner DIYers should know this as you never know when you're going to need it!

Would you have cut the hole bigger to the next joist or fill it where it was?
Back filing joints is always the best move when patching, it helps to glue the boards together, well done
I have used expanding foam as a pre filler as I find it holds everything solid and prevents cracks. Particularly effective on old lath and plaster. I saw that on the Painting & Decorating channel. That Chanel is a very good resource for repairs around the house before your finish jobs.
Neat result Vikkie, can't see any flaws in that at all.
Me either thankfully 😂 And thank you :)
Damn good work! Thank you for, 1. Being a fantastic role model for girls and women (Moms, show your daughters these videos), and, 2. Demonstrating to the doubting fellows how capable women can be.
Thanks so much :) Hopefully they're less intimidated to give something a go like I used to be 😂
Amazing job, love watching you tackle these jobs, I wish I'd been taught how to have ago at tasks like these- alas it was never encouraged when I was younger- now I'm too old. You're an inspiration for young women and should be on the national curriculum. Keep up the good work for woman kind.🙂 🙂
Really good job Vikkie, invisible join to my eyes.
Thanks so much and us too 😀
Wow, this is beyond thorough...an impeccable job
Instead of “pre-filling” expanding foam will stick the boards & dries super quick. Cut it off, push it back a bit & fill. I use Soudal Genius foam; keep the tube nice n clean & a can lasts ages.
David-The Happy Painter.
thanks for the tip :)
Well done Vicki - can’t wait to see the windows removed and the new coving! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏💕
Thanks so much :) Hopefully I can take the window out in 1 piece 😂 I think it's nailed in 😫
Yayy! Noggins!
(I also watch 'Escape to Rural France'. A slightly larger restoration project, Highly reccommended)
The only thing I would have done differently is the chamfering. I'd have done that before placing the new strip of plasterboard. And just maybe made that strip slightly wider as that 10cm wide strip is awfully fragile.
I did the taping and plastering on the walls of my apartment when it was built, and yeah, paper tape, none of the webbed, glue-backed tape anywhere. I didn't wet the tape, but watered down plaster is the way to go. (I had never done plastering before, just got a 3minute talk about it from the guy who did the ceiling.)
I laid the carpet, parquet and tile flooring, too. (It was in the contract that I either had to do it myself, or hire someone. Lowered the price a bit)
I really want a multitool. Maybe next month. I may need one to shorten some door trim then. (Going to replace carpeting with 14mm parquet. Yeah, I could easily cut the end of the trim with something else... so what? I want a new tool! )
I'll look them up :) And chamfering first would have been a MUCH better idea 🤣 It's awkward doing it while it's up on the ceiling! And good for you doing the flooring, carpet. Fitting carpets is a skill I would prefer to hire out.... I'm ok with square rooms, but not ones with chimney breasts etc (did it once and wouldn't do it again... took me FAR too long🤣)
You're doing a great job with the home and garden.
*Vikkie, great job done.. 🙂 Hopefully soon you won't have to go up into the loft ever again... 🙂nz*
Thank you and here's hoping 😆 Although I do have to go back up again for bricking the top of the chimney breast sadly if I can't squeeze them in the top gap 😆
It’s really starting to come together. It’s looking great
OMG Vikki, the state of you after all that work!!
Do you mean those trousers?👖😆 unless I generally look knackered 😅
@@TheCarpentersDaughterUKYeah Those. If ur a 34-36 I'll send ya some spankin new unopend LOL!!
Great Sunday viewing. Looking forward to more content 😁
You are such a wonderful perfectionist! ❤❤
I drive myself mad sometimes 😂 I can be like a dog with a bone until I'm happy with something lol
We always prefill.
Cool, some great advice. Cheers.
Glad I could be of use 😀
Nicely done.
Nice work 😊
Great job very well done 👍
Glad you have ppe, last week I was chipping off some plaster and brickwork, a small piece of brickwork hit my eye and I've got a small chunk of my eye chipped out, should be fully healed in 3 months, and yes it was very painful, 😢the joys of being a carpenter.
Ouch!!! Sorry to hear that! I had skim go in my eye during the plasterboard ceiling video (doing corner tape) and felt pure panic!! Hope you heal asap!
You should consider optrex eyes wash or something lubricating from the Doctor and drink lots of water too.
Nice work,looks good. Great video👍
Great neat job
Thank you! :)
Neat job. 👍
Cheers 😀
A job well done.
🇮🇪
Thanks so much 😀
I have been watching all your video's However, I don't leave comments much (Sorry) But I had to this time because you have done a great - No scratch that - An Awesome job hear. 👍👍👍👍
What was funny were the 100 times you changed clothes.
haha.... thanks so much for taking the comment to share such kind words :) I certainly don't work quickly, so this gets brought up quite often with my regular clothing changes 🤣
That looked like a real faff but the end result seems worth it, looks spot on.
Thanks! It'd be much easier/quicker getting a plasterer in, but I'm too tight 😅
@@TheCarpentersDaughterUK Nowt wrong with a bit of DIY. A lot of us are watching for tips and suggestions of how to do the very same so thanks for sharing.
Very nice mam 🎉
Thanks so much! Although I always feel old when I hear mam 😅
Love the blouse was it one you no longer like lol? Glasses just for the detail stuff or contacts usually?
Do you think that you wouldn’t take this property on if you knew the battles you have had so far?
Ah... charity shop find 😀 I took a chance and no paint/filler on it thankfully 😄
And yes, we would still have bought this house. We've had no nasty surprises and nothing is daunting (yet 😅)
Very tidy indeed! You might be able to dot and dab that wall with 9mm to meet the existing plaster if it's thick enough. I can't quite tell how thick the original plaster is or if there's render behind it from the video. My old lime plaster was getting on for an inch thick in places so we had loads of depth to play with. I personally quite like a plaster skim on walls even over pb, it's a bit more durable to the odd knock.
Ahhh... that's a good point! I know it's more than 12.5mm thick on the wall adjacent as i tried cutting my notch out at that and it wasn't enough. I may try that! It had plaster and render, but yes, plaster is def more hardwearing and may be more suitable for here in our future office area.
That's a lot of work 🥵🥵
Haha... but worth it 😀 or get a plasterer in after!
Very neat job. Whats the brand of hop up your using. Its a nice size for DIY - Happy Plastering
It’s from toolstation Werner brand I have the same one best I’ve ever had(£50ish) plus I got the adjustable legs one great for higher ceilings and stairs
Back fill with expanding foam cut back then use filler.
Another good job , bet that telly is up by now and you on the netflix lol 👍
I wish! haha..... I've got paint samples coming soon - once painted, we'll be working on the ethernet, sockets, then it's going up 😍 but we can't wait!
Get a tape measure with Lazor 👍😊
💖
If you're tape and fill. Do you use tapered edge boards? It would allow more filler in ,and less chance of cracking, I tend to use fibre tape, you plaster mix looked a bit too sloppy, but you got the job done, and it looks pretty good 👍.
I would've used tapered plasterboard for the ceiling with fibatape like before if the other edge was also tapered. But I also wanted to practice paper tape on square edges more (with wet paper) for the TV wall area, which is why I didn't go for tapered there this time.
Nice - thoughts on that self-adhesive mesh scrim tape? Could have been used before the initial filler ?
Yes, I don't think the finish would have been as nice with the join not being tapered
Hi Vikkie. If i had a wife like you i'd have more time for drinking beer.. Great desicition to stay anon Mr TCD
You need a measuring stick
that would've been better!!!!! 😂
Aww i thought you were just going to upgrade the windows so you could open it up to let fresh air in?! 😊
We're planning on installing double doors instead
@@TheCarpentersDaughterUK spoiler alert!! 😂
Whoops 🤭 😆
The plan may change 😅
you can come and do mine
sadly I'm retired now from doing ceilings 🤣🤣
Wait, your coving it? So why are you even bothering filling that section of ceiling? That gap would have been covered by the coving
Good question.... I don't want to lose heat through this gap when it comes to winter
Crown molding wouldn’t plug the MASSIVE air leak into the attic.
Nice job 👍 ❤
A proper job requires it.
@@TheCarpentersDaughterUK there wouldn't be a gap. As it'll be plugged with coving
As fun as plastering is 💤 how’s the veg patch going
That's why I felt like I needed another week off at the start of the video.... when the sun is out, I'd much rather be in the garden (where I was last week) - hopefully I'll be sharing an update very soon - just waiting for more seedlings to grow so I can take people along with some extra changes (as well as showing how things are growing). If you're on Instagram, I've been sharing a lot on there
@@TheCarpentersDaughterUK I will have a look thank you
This is honestly the most ridiculous video iv ever seen. Very basic work, it doesnt need a video making about it
Yet you watched it...
