I think it's commendable that you owned up to what was wrong with the photos. It's a great reminder to all of us that we all make mistakes when making photography and it's ok to acknowledge what we did wrong and what we can do to make better photographs for next time. Great video, thank you for sharing!

I like the honesty in this video. I can’t wait to see what you get when you fully understand the lens.

Nothing I respect more in a person than one who is honest and self-critical. Good job on this video in either case!!!

I really love that lens too. there's just something. about it that's just the right mix between sharp and film looking. I ended up shooting a whole wedding on it out of necessity last year and those are still some of my favorite photos.

Just traded a lens I wasn’t using to get this one. I am an experienced photographer and will be using it mainly for portraits and street shooting. With mistakes comes knowledge…don’t ever fear mistakes they help us grow.

Looking beyond the technical mistakes and the less than hoped for filter results, I really liked the images you shared.

Nice video, brother. Well produced! I like that you mentioned your goofs too - we all make them! 😂 Congrats on the lens, I’m getting one soon too and you’ve made me even more excited for it. Cheers!

Happy you still uploaded the video despite these mistakes. Did the same mistakes with my first shots with the Leica Q2M a few days ago. Didn't consider the shutter speed and most shots got blurry...
I was thinking about this lens and the Sony G 50mm 2.5 and in the end got the G 50mm, simply because the deal on Kleinanzeigen was 350€ vs. 400€ or more for the bigger 55mm without aperture ring - got a lucky deal :D
Greetings from Esslingen and Guten Rutsch!

I had the Zeiss Otus 55 1.4 couple of years ago and I made some fantastic photos with it,

Hi Tobis, one thought on the filter: if you don't like the washed out look of the black pro mist, maybe try out glimmer glass instead. GxAce has a great video comparing the two. And if you haven't come across his channel already you'll be in for a treat!

Funny that the 55 1.8 has been your dream lens for so long. I got one not long ago simply because I wanted something good, but affordable for shooting weddings. For anything of my personal shooting, I hardly even know what to do with longer focal lengths. 50mm feels pretty tight for me already.
Anyway, thanks for sharing the photos you took even though you were embarrassed by your mistakes! And yeah, too shallow a depth of field really is a thing with full frame. Shallower often isn’t better (unless you’re shooting really wide lenses, then it’s f***ing AWESOME) and I definitely want to get more disciplined at choosing my aperture with more intention.

Funny that you say that you wanted this less because it's less perfect and less sterile than other lenses since I sold it because combined with the almost-50mm-look it was too perfect for me.
This 55mm was also the first lens I got back when I bought my A7III. Having owned an A-Mount FF camera before I was already fimiliar with the 50mm FF look and I thought the additional 5mm would make a difference. But I was wrong. Combined with the digital perfectness I dreaded the look of this Zeiss 55mm lens, so I sold it a few years ago since I did not know what to shoot with it. Lately I am interested in picking this lens up again though since I have finally thought of some ideas how to use it.
I like how you talk about your mistakes!
I'd recommend to remove the mist filter and embrace the sterile nature of this lens.
If you are searching for more character I'd suggest looking at 40mm lenses (Sony G 40mm f2.5 or the manual focus Voigtländer 40mm f1.2) or pick up some old 80s/90s Minolta lenses and use them with a Sony adapter (A-Mount to E-Mount).

I've owned mine for years but have to tell ya. The 35 g master is the most fun to use. Pick one up and you'll love it's " character"

I like the blurriness - There’s a few artists I follow who intentionally lower their shutter speed for that shaky effect. Love my 55 f1.8!

Newer Subscriber here, you and I switched positions. I sold my Sony A7IV and Fx3 and my lenses and switched to the Leica Q2 (Daniel Craig X Greg Williams Edition). Loving this Q2, really liked my Fx3 too, a7iv was pretty solid too, but don't miss it like I do the Fx3

Always use a lens Hood !!! I have the Sony Zeiss Sonnar 55mm 1.8 which are an excellent Lens ! I use it for portrait, Landscape, street/urban/architecture with Sony A7RIV either in full frame or in APSC-mode. I do wish that Sony/Zeiss will make a new version with better resolution for high megapixel Cameras and af button for manual/AF-focusing, also an aperture ring.

You should have used the viewfinder, it would have help to avoid too much shakiness and you could normally have seen that you images were not in focus 😉

Love it Too, but it has a soft image in close ups at f1.8 and substantial of chromatic aberrations. It all goes away of course at around f 3.5
