- It's Monday, so Matt decides to do his two favorite things: drive on empty roads and ride roller coasters without waiting in line. We take the BMW 1M to California's finest empty roads to see what the hype is about. Check out Matt's cover story on Road Lanes Magazine here. www.RoadLanes.com/MattFarah
And look at that, the car is still amazing 8 years later.
Top 3 greatest BMW's of all time.
What are the other 2?

The E39 M5 is nothing to scoff at either.

@@joeleonard9965 I’ve since changed my list to 1m, e46 and e30, owner of an interlagos comp and three e30 m3s. Nothing is like them
This guy is the only american reviewer I really like and probably one of the best reviewers I have ever seen.
1. Talking realistically about cars without stupid screaming like Jeremy Clarkson.
2. Driving car the way as 99% customers would drive those cars. Not drifting through every corner.
3. It is interesting without forcing it.
Yesterday, I was driven in one of those for the first time of my life.
These things are just... astonishing... That sound, the revs, the grip, how it just devours every single corner with a grace previously unknown to me.
Gotta love the Germans, they know how to make a fast car.
This 1M have the same problem like the Cayman. They could perform much better if they may. But then it will be faster then the M3 and 911
For a limited edition model they should’ve just
Put a Downpipe and intake on the car ;)
Also, Convienance package takes car of the key issue...something nice about the 135...more options, less money, less maintenance and an ability to tune to over 400whp
This guys knows how to talk about the cars he drives..perfect critic
modesto vargas lol
I see a white 1M in a driveway on the way to work, not matter what time I go it's still there, it's a shame it's not being used properly
Ian Townsend I’ve only driven 200 miles in 11 months. It’s a special car for special occasions nothing more. Wanna daily driver buy a daily driver
@Razor4ever The 1M is WAY more fun than the IS-F, and also more fun (and quicker in the twisties) than the M3
2:56 One take confirmed.
@choppchopp007 no, the M1 was BMW's first supercar built in the early 80's. This is the "1-Series M Coupe" or 1M for short.
Matt you are a KILLER at what you do. Never seen anyone do it better. Keep it coming
I love the shot at the 5 min of the far out view out the road your diving on
@EatmyDust1311 you're referring to the GT500KR, which was made in limited numbers. standard issue GT500's are built to order.
@Bladesting of course. we used it for all the car-to-car shots in this video
@ao10s The only way we can shoot videos is when the whole crew is available in between side jobs. In this case, we spent all of september and october filming the rest of the year's TST's, but didn't leave time for editing. Since Tom will be out of town working for Porsche during most of November, he will have time to edit and upload and the videos will be more frequent.
if they made it faster it would be faster than the m3, you know how it works.
that issue can be easily solved by the user with a ecu tune.
You see how the nimble rocket M2 bites it's bigger brothers in the ass, heh :). So yeah, true.
I sat in that same 1M awhile back, kinda cool seeing it on video
@Warrantti There isn't lag in the sense that the engine needs to be wound way up to make power, but you can feel boost building as the revs climb.
I would not say the 1M is born to go sideways, despite what Jeremy Clarkson says. With the traction control left on, the car stays in line without the system feeling over intrusive. With it turned off, it's quite easy to get the 1M sideways.
To the part about the "it could be faster" I agree, for an M car 30hp gain isn't much.
Thankfully, there are quite a lot of options for a simple piggyback tune or flash.
For like what, $500-$600 bucks you can pump the boost and make 80hp and 100tq more than stock, it won't need any supporting parts either.
The N54 motor has to be the HP per DOLLAR spent gains of any newer car, or close to it.
I miss my 2007 335i, I spent $886.00 on a piggyback tune (JB4)/ charge pipe (active autowerkes, and intakes (burger motorsports) and my car was running with stock GTR's and trapping almost 120mph. To bad to maintain the car it costs quite a bit and so I ended up selling it and getting into a practical (for now) 2014 Ford Focus ST, which I am happy with!
Coz warranties are for women and pussies.
Jason W. Morningwood
Lmao, if you say so. I decided to invest in my logistics business instead of dumping thousands into my car. The way things are going, once I purchase a second semi truck and trailer, I'll be ready to skip BMW and purchase a GTR.
I don't regret my decision one bit ;).
MikeHuntIsItchy Honestly, a warranty is the only reason I personally would want a new car, otherwise I could just grab an E46, an S15 or some other stereotypical tuner in decent shape and pimp the shit out of that. :D
Holy crap did I just find Sasha on UA-cam 😂
Caelan Bibby
indeed, not sure who are though? Sorry :\
sweet review...that road looks awesome.the '11 challenger review was my fav...spot on with the description...keep up the great work....
Thumbs up about the great video colors and quality.... don't even feel the need for 1080p when the video's made proper, i like your reviews since you have that laid back kinda personality that makes people actually enjoy their cars not just use them as tools for point a and b
I think this is the best bm since the e46
@iSOBigD and I wasn't even talking about that kind of technology, which can be completely disabled on BMW's anyway. I was talking about paddle shift transmissions, navigation systems with LCD screens, and other things that get progressively better so the older stuff is outdated. LIke buying a 2005 Ferrari 360 with paddle shifters and navigation. That there, is one outdated car and is worth nothing. A 2005 Ford GT with a manual transmission, and no nav system will never feel outdated.
Just come back to tst after a year of not watching for a year or so, man I love this show! Mat you legend! :)
@thedayyouth We're not talking about Alfa Romeos from the 1930's here. We're talking about outdated electronics, so everything operates the same as it does now, just much slower. It's frustrating and when you drive the new car, lets say the Ferrari 458, the shift times etc. of the 360 feel like eternity.
@TheHire99 while you could re-create the power, you simply can't re-create the handling abilities without doing a full widebody kit on your 135i. As a Ford Raptor owner, I can attest to the fact that there truly is no substitute for extra width, unless you're willing to sacrifice a major amount of ride quality.
@bmwmsport11 no it was a 2011 model only, and all 1,200 are sold out.
@jereisluke We're not saying 335 horsepower is a bad thing. We're saying that ALL other M cars get 100 horsepower bump from the cars they are based on. The 1M "only" gets 35, even though the truth is it's more like 55.
Looks like you're feeling better, Matt. Glad to see it. Another great video!
Great recording of the signature L6 engine sound.
I agree. Between the two, the only thing I think I'd miss in the E46 would be the gas mileage of the 1-series. I'd love to see a review.
Great drive Matt! Especially since I'll probably never get a chance to drive this car...you made it real for me and I thank you!
740 States not 1500
I love that you still use the footage from the faux Ferrari shoot in your opening. Regardless of fauxness, it was still so cool.
Just freakin saw one here in the Philippines. Didn't expect one to be here! Looks wide and mad lol
@wdbwfan I had back surgery in July and haven't been able to go to the gym for 8 months because of it. Now that I'm healed up, I'm back on the gym wagon.
The 1M is one beautiful car, small, nimble, but beautiful.
Ive always wanted to visit Knott's Berry Farm, im from North California...
@EatmyDust1311 I think that both the Boss and 1M are limited production cars, and the Shelby GT500 is not. Furthermore, they are both completely sold out (at least on the dealer-to-manufacturer level) so there is just no way you're going to get either of them for sticker. I know lots of people that won't pay a dime over sticker for anything, but when a car is already sold out and a dealership has their total inventory (1-10 cars tops), they will get their asking price from someone.
nice downshift on 2.11 , and i second opinion on 1080p especially with so fine evening and early morning scenery
@avensons007 shoooting the whole thing in 1080P would require us to buy a new $7,000 camera, which we don't really need.
@tuugfo it's not a limited production car. used M3's depreciate the same way as Camry's do. They are not worth holding on to for collector value alone, therefore they are disposable. This is a good thing, because you just beat the shit out of them and then move on, not having to worry about their long term value (because it will always be less than what you bought it for) unless you're driving an absolutely cherry E30.
@apostate001 When I filmed the Hyundai bit, we filmed it as a 3-car comparison test. I drove the Mercedes S-Class and Lexus LS460 back to back with the Hyundai. And the Hyundai didn't win the test. When the film went to air, it was re-cut as a single car review without my knowledge. So, to answer your question directly: No, they are not interested in those things, or hearing criticism from me about what they are doing. That's why we continue making TST. So you see what it's like when I produce.
first song is: "violin echoes", second is "undercover". you can see the link at 6:20
@didafm we all have to make a living doing other things so we can make TST in our spare time. We have lots of videos in the can and will be uploading regularly through the rest of 2011
@its2realj Our guys work perfectly as a unit. Tom as head camera and editor, Thaddeus as B-Camera and mounted cameras, and Zack as camera car driver / PA / Co-Writer. We aren't hollywood producers "slash" car guys. We're all photographers "slash" camera guys. Thaddeus, Tom, and myself all majored in Photography or Film, therefore we look at every shot artistically, whereas The Car Show producers do not. We think that's what separates a good car show from an average one.
what a great fking review matt, makes me proud of owning a 1M and you clearly know the right things to say as I agree in everything you just said! Thank you
@EatmyDust1311 That person was at a taping in person, and watching pre-air versions of the films. Obviously many things were cut from both the studio and the films between that review and final aired segments.
1:18 I just noticed that's my canyon. I live 2mins away from that straight away at the top:). Love that canyon and love driving it every day.
Good to see you're well enough for roller coasters!
It would be awesome if you could do a review on the e46 M3, and see how you think it competes now with newer cars.
@5serieslover Yes, the 1M is more fun, more efficient, and just as practical as the M3 for less money. Plus, it's a collectors item and M3's are essentially disposable. And I'm not saying where the road is because I don't want it all clogged up with morons.
love the car, love the review
and you actually have a proper twisty road in the us of a, more of that please
Had me 1M 2 years now, still amazed every time i drive it...
@Sjarokez Lucky you, I stand by the collectible statement though
The 335is solves the exhaust note problem you mentioned. One of its best qualities.
@babrown7 the GTO isn't bad. I was never a fan, but I can see why other people like them.
@thefordmustangrocks my Ford Raptor which we use as a camera/crew truck for TST, and my modified 1998 Corvette
@donvoisko 1) you should read my cover story review in the online magazine "road lanes" if you want more, different thoughts on the 1M. And 2) We fit 4 people in the 1M for a 50 mile drive, and while my seat was closer to the wheel than I'd like, it worked.
@mathmatic26 Definitely possible, as our car also wasn't fitted with iDrive, which is optional. Our guess is that the iDrive (technology package?) would also include keyless go.
lol, you don't have to stick the FOB into the keyhole to start the car. I just leave the key in my pocket and press the start/stop button. The purpose of the keyhole on the dash is to recharge your FOB (the key) and since each BMW key can be personalized that is why you can insert it into the the port.
Looked like a fun car, And Damn Matt has a nice hidden road for his drive.
very cool video, i was thinkin Matt had gotten ahold of an actual M1. Come to think of it a comparo video between classic and modern ///M cars would be awesome.
E36 ///M3 owner
Keep it going Matt & TST co... You guys do great real owner reviews. Keep it real guys.
This car is going to be amazing with aftermarket. Just tuning this will pick up quite a bit. Throw in a turbo back exhaust with no cats and you'll pick up at least 50-100
@MrTONYTONYM they are called Dillon Optics. If you order them through the banner ad on our website, we send you a free TST shirt with your purchase.
Footage in this one is pretty spectacular. Good luck guys. BTW isn't Thaddeus Polish?
@TheEightSixEight My Corvette has no traction control, and I've managed to drive it for 13 years without a scratch. You don't need technology when you know how to drive properly.
Excellent review Matt but there are two important question you didn´t answer.
1) Is there noticeable turbo lag in 1M?
2)1M was basically born to go sideways all the time but Is it easy to drift 1M?
@carcrazzy247 Tom, our editor, put that up at about 4AM after doing a 12 hour editing bender. We can forgive him for a little dyslexia sometimes.
@Razor4ever MPG is shocking apparently. My mate has one and he gets 160 miles from a full tank. But it's one of the best cars I've ever touched. Amazing.
what a beast of a car ... just wondering but is it so rare that it will appreciate in value over the years ??
@mapko15 yes, but i don't really advertise that.
@TheSmokingTire I may be wrong, but when the 2007 GT500 was announced it was to be a limited run, two year only car. The only truly rare Ford is the GT, and the only reason its gone is regulations.
@adj789
Our editor was up til the wee hours finishing this video and had a moment of dyslexia. If you've ever been up at 4am and tried to write coherently, you will forgive us.
You guys are THE BEST! And i really want to work with you one day.
The video quality is amazing. Great vid. However I wish they were more often
Once again another fantastic review.
Fantastic car I'm sure. I'm a 135i owner and love my 1er. However I wish they squeezed more power out of that motor. Just take a look at all the current aftermarket chips/tunes you can get for it, I'm running a JB4 and I put down around 370-380hp on a stock motor. Honestly for less money you could possibly recreate the performance of the 1M by just upgrading a normal 135i. As much as I love the 1M, its hard to justify the price.
@Omega08082 The 1M will not start unless the key is inserted. At least our test vehicle wouldn't.
Awsome car, awsome review! I love the roads you guys always choose and the editing style!
great review like always. now we wait 2 months for the next
@Frdmstang Im feeling a lot better, although I still have a few months of recovery left. Motor Trend is entitled to their opinion, and I don't read the magazine, but it would be very difficult for someone who likes driving to not enjoy this car.
If if had any more power, i feel like you'd struggle for traction coming out of turns on the gas. The 1M (in my opinion) has the perfect amount of power and grip for it to be a fun, reliable, car.
This is what i wanna see matt!!! No nonsense, no bullshit, just a guy, a car attitude and a car plus a little fun! Goddam i wish you go on tv alone without the car show cast cauz they suck!
Matt just keep doing what you do bro.
@LikwiDgAngStr we don't do product reviews on the show, sorry.
@hockeyrulez23 I already tested the Ariel Atom vs the KTM X-Bow on The Car Show.
@bmancodgta4 I know exactly why it doesn't have more power, and the first part of your answer is correct. The chassis could easily handle 400 horsepower, which the engine could make no problem with a reprogrammed ECU. It wouldn't cost a dime more.
Man I love this car, it looks great. But the price is a killer. This car used today costs more than it did when it was brand new. So you can see it's a legend already, and will definately be a collectible in time, I have no doubt about that.
I just hope I'll be able to own one of these one day, but they way how price keeps on climbing owning one won't be easy unless you're some rich douche.
+Atrax1207 You should check them out again, over the last year the prices on these have taken a dump. Still expensive, but definitely more attainable.
as m2 becomes more widely produced the prices will continue to plummit
Atrax1207 lol don't you love how cars lose value ? 3 years later and in California you can get one with 75-130k milage for around $7-$15k
Shane Farley there’s only 15 for sale nationwide on autotrader going for 50k lowest. The 135i is in the 15k range right now
@dgevert for a modern, somewhat luxurious car, 3300 is featherweight.
@EatmyDust1311 Boss if it was the Laguna Seca edition and the two could realistically be had for the same price. Boss LS's are retailing for close to $70k so it's not an apples to apples comparison
This car is an essence of BMW. This is how BMW's used to be. Small light coupe or saloon, understated luxury, high quality, but no stuff thats not needed, like massage seats or self-parking system. Its just a drivers car. Normal 1 series drivers amazingly, even the basic 116i feels like a proper sports car when you throw it around corners.
@wfangnxd117 healed up nicely, thanks.
great review. I also think they could have created something even faster.
the thing with the key is better that way. keyless go systems are to easy to steal.
Oh man, I can't wait to get out to California and enjoy these roads. Plus all the power of being at sea level.
Your guys videos are rockin. Keep it up!
is that the Mulholland Highway in California........fun stretch to drive
@disengagejam probably, but it may take a while
The shot at 0:43 is absolutely beautiful.
@MisterPeetBull it's a press car like most of the other cars we test.
