  • This documentary brings together rarely-solicited perspectives on one of America’s most persistent public health issues from those who are intimately involved and affected time and time again - parents, teachers, home inspectors, landlords, health care professionals, legal advisors, local officials, and the victims themselves. Hear how this medical, social, and economic tsunami called ‘lead poisoning’ continues to devastate families and communities despite increasing knowledge that it is 100% preventable. Produced in New York State through a public health partnership including Cornell Cooperative Extension Oneida, the Health Departments of Oneida, Steuben, and Tompkins Counties, NY, and Excellus BlueCross BlueShield. 11:31 In the blood there is an enzyme called 5-ALA. 5-ALA is normally converted into another enzyme called ALAD. When there is lead in the blood it prevents the conversion of 5-ALA into ALAD. Because 5-ALA continues to be formed regardless of the lead, the levels of 5-ALA increase as it is not converted into ALAD. 5-ALA attaches to receptors that normally bind to GABA. 5-ALA does not do much of what GABA does (is a potent agonist for GABA). GABA calms you down. This is a reason that lead causes hyperactivity/hyperkinetic behavior.
