    I've been using something similar for a couple decades "FORD": Family, Occupation, Recreation, Dreams. Not sure which one is easier to remember but for sure makes one pursuit the same questions when networking. Thanks Alexander for Posting this video! BTW-The FORD technique predates me as I was exposed to it in a sales training seminar.

      That's a good one! I've heard of FORM too, but I can't recall what the M was for. Perhaps Motivation (what motivates them?).

    I keep commenting on your videos. I'm a new subscriber as of today. I'm a Nurse Practitioner student and a UA-camr. In both these worlds, I have to communicate well with confidence and I'm so happy I found your channel. I appreciate all of these tips. Thank you!!

    Excellent Video and insights on how to properly disagree. This video really makes an impact when I apply to my daily work life. Being considered to join the management team at a young age causes a lot of controversy. But after watch this video it gave me a different approach to take when addressing my employees when I disagree. Thank you so much I will be taking all these tips with me to work on Monday.

    I recently read a book about social skills* that said that people aren't willing to learn the deep 'real you' until they see that you can appropriately navigate social rules (like small talk and having the right body language and focus in a group). It really landed with me. This video is about how to do small talk in a way that lets you connect and find areas of commonality.

      Thanks. I appreciate the encouragement. I've since modified the first F to "From," as in ask about where they are from. Family works too but people like to talk about their home towns and where they grew up. Family still works and the two are related but I lead with "From" now.

      I am one that also struggles with conversing. But I agree with this video Alex really kept it really simple and easy to understand and follow. Alex also gave some really good tips that we can apply to our professional and individual lives.

    I plan on viewing most of your videos this weekend to answer some of my confusions about communication. This video is a helpful tip!
    I’m finding myself stumped in conversation and am quite curious of your take on the following and if you think I’m committing a cardinal sin-should you be interested in sharing :-). Also please let me know if this is something you cover in your business coaching.
    I often am stumped on small talk. I prefer deep conversations which is rare to begin off the bat with someone you’ve just met. So there’s something I haven’t quite gotten the hang of.
    When I connect with people I leave room for the good and bad in conversation. For example I met someone yesterday and we found commonality in our young appearances. We had a shared experience of people not taking her seriously because of her age. I asked, “man isn’t that frustrating to experience?” She made a face and the conversation dipped. This happens quite often whenever I express a statement meant to show understanding. Conversation dips and I receive a funny look. Is this some kind of social faux pas with people you’re just meeting? It seems that people stick to purely positive conversation upon first meeting.
    It certainly leaves me feeling like a social dunce (ha!).

      I dont get to talk to anyone to often but music is great. I have a tough time interacting with other people. I feel like I'm not as smart or good enough to talk to them. It's something I'm really trying to get over. That's why I watch your videos. To become more attractive to talk to.

    Hi. Wanted to understand, will this type of conversation work for all individuals as there are people with different behaviours.

    • @alexanderlyon
      @alexanderlyon  3 роки тому

      It's difficult to come up with any tips that work for *_all_* people. Everybody is a little different. However, these types of communication practices can be effective in many situations. My recommendation is always to try them and see how it works and adjust as necessary. That's the only test that really matters.

    It's good to keep in mind that as Canadian and US culture become increasingly multicultural what are considered appropriate topics of conversation can vary significantly. For example, I understand you do not ask French people about their work - that's considered too intrusive.

    • @alexanderlyon
      @alexanderlyon  6 років тому

      Yes, true. In some cultures is also rude to ask about people's family. Rules for conversation are certainly different throughout the world. Thanks for the tip.

    hello I am having a lot of conversations this is fine but the thing is people dont ask you questions in return and this is a little annoying but i am fine with it since people are so preoccupied with themselves.

    • @alexanderlyon
      @alexanderlyon  3 роки тому

      Yes, that happens a lot. People's skill in asking questions is usually pretty low.
