- In this clip, Maggie Arnett (Mary Alice), the spiritual head of the Arnetts, feels that her family and society in general is tiding against her deeply held beliefs when it comes to her 16-year daughter, Sheila Arnett (Malinda Williams) and sex.
Jake, the co-head of the Arnetts (Mel Winkler) is the supportive rock of the family, reassures Maggie that she's not irrelevant as a mother.
In another character parallel to Soul Food The Movie is Maggie's stepson, Woody Arnett (Dan Martin). Like the Miles character (who is the husband of Teri), he wants to forgo the life of stability to pursue life as a recording musician / producer. Woody and his wife Kathleen Arnett (Gay Thomas-Wilson) represent the upscale archetype in the movie like Teri and Miles in Soul Food. As a matter of fact, Jake and Maggie represent the down home archetype similar to the Maxine (Vivica A. Fox) and Kenny (Jeffrey D. Sams) couple of SF the movie.
