Hi! You are my new best friend! I'm about to paint our red bricks white today. From your video I learned that concrete stain is better than paint for this job. I think I'll use a brush instead of a sprayer. The spraying is faster, but I don't want to breath in the fumes. Also, with the spraying, you still have to go back and use a brush also to get into the cracks. Very helpful, thanks! I'm subscribed and liking! I may make a video about my progress!
Hey Chris, I've been a professional painter for what seems like forever. I wanted to tip my hat to you for all the great videos. I have used your videos to compare some of my more unconventional residential techniques and you're always right on the money. I bet that you have more work than you know what to do with! I'm vouching for you 100%. You're a professional through and through. Keep it up!
A C I don’t know what others did but I washed my brick inside and out with Scrubbing Bubbles bathroom cleaner. Yes it was messy. LOL I didn’t know my bricks were an off white color inside. They were black and thickly coated with soot. This was the messiest thing I have ever cleaned but looked so nice - until my fires again. My decorative brick has a design and kind of crumbly. I just sprayed the cleaner in the brick, let it sit for awhile, not to dry though and took a scrub brush to it. Then let it dry overnight. I couldn’t find the stain so I just used a whitewash for my paint. My bricks were an off white color to start with. Nice white now!
Hey Chris, I've enjoyed watching your videos for years. Just came across this one. Looks like you used a great product, great results as well ! I've painted a few fireplaces over the last 22 years. They were all older and useable fireplaces though. Always, the first questions I ask the customer before providing a quote is if they intend to ever use the fireplace again, and if it is for decorative purposes only. The only heat resistance paint or stain ( that I know of ) only comes in black or a very dark gray, the customer typically don't want that. They seem to always ask for a white or off-white color as well. So, my question is if that is an unusable fireplace, due to the toxic fumes that would be emitted if the fireplace was used from the product that was applied to the brick above? Anyway, lots of respect for you and the way you have improved the painting industry over the years. Years ago you were a guest speaker at a P.D.C.A. meeting I attended. It's nice to know that there are painting contractors out there that take pride in doing quality work, and have employees that's have the same qualities and respect for their customers as well.
Searches for a video on "how to paint " finds a vid from the Idaho painter... instant upvote on video before i even watch it. You do great work and great vids.
@@Idahopainter Very much so. Construction is completed so now we're at that point of wanting to paint the brick. Just wondering if an air spray gun (automotive type) would properly apply the latex paint...
Wow just freakin amazing ...I got emotional once it was all done haha I love it...Im gonna paint the brick outside my home now...Thank you for this video...
Hi Chris fireplace looks great, I've painted a few fireplaces, the grout or concrete setting is always a challenge to cover being so porous ever tried using a primer sealer for masonory then apply the finish product. Your video gave me the idea. Great videos.
So I realize this post is 4 years old as I write this but ... what is your reason for saying you don't like painting brick? I have a single story home built in 1956 in Fresno CA that has 2 brick fireplaces, one in the living room is pretty ugly. I would like to put a gas insert in since we can't burn wood here very much and I don't think I want to apply a different material over the brick so I have been considering painting it. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks
Hey boss, I would also like to paint the exterior of my home white. It is brick material but I am not familiar with painting. Should I use oil base or what recommendations should I follow. Thanks.
Maybe it was the lighting. Just looked from video the grout lines weren't covered very well. PS, I also said I enjoyed your videos, You give Plenty of good info to the viewers.
Thank you for the great tips Mr. JOHN CENA sir! WWE professional wrestler, actor, rapper, and reality television show host, and Home Improvement How To's owner and painter!
I have Chicago brick floors that were previously sealed. They are almost the same color as my kitchen cabinets as is. I want to lighten the brick floors and thought that white washing be a good idea; however was told that because the bricks were sealed, I could not do a traditional white wash. Any ideas of how I could get a white wash look on a sealed brick floor and it be durable?
Where is the product? I was hoping there would be a link to the actual stain. Looks like there is a link to every tool but not the primary product used here?
I have a red and dark gray brick fireplace. I would like to sponge paint each brick with gray concrete stain. Is this safe for gas fireplaces? The heat is mainly on the hearth, not on the sides or up above the insert. Would masonry paint work, also? Thank you.
I am painting my 50 year old pink brick (looks pink) fireplace. Can you use a brush on it - mine is much smaller than the one in your video. I do not want to buy a sprayer. Do you think it is better to stain rather than paint? What is the name of the stain and where did you buy it? Please help. Thanks very much.
hi there.. enjoying the videos and as a handyman some have been really useful! ive bought an airless sprayer which I love but I'm looking for a small handheld sprayer so I can blast through trim and doors.. have you any recommendation for one?
Nice, you covered both projects I actually wanted to accomplish. I was curious though why you don't recommend staining/painting the brick? Do you just prefer the look of brick?
I’m in the planning on staining my fire place but there aren’t any store here in SC that sell H&C concrete stain! Is there another brand you recommend or what should i look for when finding a concrete stain?!
This looks amazing. I plan on doing this to my red brick fireplace in the spring. I wasn't sure if I should use paint or stain. After looking at this video, I definitely will use the stain. Especially this brand because you don't have to use primer. In other videos I've viewed, I've seen where you have to prime the brick. That's more work, which is more time consuming. I like the end results of this project. My only question is about my mantle. It is a long solid piece of wood which I cannot detach. Could I spray the wood too and get the same result as the brick?
I have to paint exterior side of 9story building but there is so many windows how I paint with airless sprayer can I spray with brush attached gun Is that possible please reply me faster it's urgent big project 5lackh sqft
First id like to say thank you for posting all these painting videos. I've learned so much and saved a lot of money painting my home and rentals myself. I'm planning on painting the exterior my four plex and wanted to know if you have any tips on painting t1-11 siding? The current coat is peeling. Is there a video I'm missing? Thanks again.
Love your channel! I am learning so much. That is such a small area to paint. What is the smallest container of paint and the shortest length of hose that you would use for your airless sprayer?
Our brick fireplace was painted (by the previous owners) with white paint. How do we get that lovely natural brick color back? What is the best way to achieve this? (Are there chemicals that can 'peel' the white paint off? or do we have it professionally sandblasted? I'm lost! Help! lol thanks to anyone who can offer advice.
Sylvia you more than likely will never get it all off, not without sand blasting, which is not practical inside a home, and the process could, and very likely will, damage the brick and mortar joints. That's part of the reason many painters will advise against painting virgin brick, just as Chris did here.

Grout lines look terrible. You never applied enough stain to the Grout lines. Should of allowed the stain to sit over night after 3 to 4 coats. Apply several more coats just to the Grout lines, let set up several hours then apply one final coat by way of airless gun. the idea is to have it look like Paint but wear like stain.
