I’m a Japanese.
Erwin always calls himself “watashi”,which means “ I “ ,and this is used in formal scenes such as business or some events.
But only when he talked to Levi about his dream,he called himself “Ore”.
This also means “I”,but this is used in casual scenes like a guy talks with his friends or someone close to him.
This is the first time when Erwin used “Ore”.
Like this,many ingenious ideas lies in this work.

In OVA No Regrets,after levi's friends are killed, Erwin says to levi.
"Don't you'll regret it.
If you begin to regret you'll dull your future decisions, and let other make choices for you.
All that's left for you then is to die."
Then in this episode before the suicide charge Erwin has regrets.
And lets levis make the decision telling Erwin to give up his dream and now all that's left for him is to die. The foreshadowing in this show is crazy. Truly a masterpiece!
Not only that, but Levi swore to himself that he would be the one to kill Erwin in the same OVA.
Looks like he made good on that promise here as well.

In manga that talk is much more fleshed out and Isayama thought about major character decision and plot points rather than making it on go which lots of shonen anime do that's why it's so good with foreshadowing
I don't think Erwin is regretting as much as he is reflecting, asking himself if he can truly be selfless and put his money where his mouth is; if he'll stop just telling people to give their lives and give his own as well.
A lot of elitists in life see themselves as superior, "rules for thee but not for me". Erwin proves he is not above the rest of the scouts by dying alongside the new recruits.

I love how Erwin doesn't say "Dedicate your hearts" at the end, he's no longer putting a mask on to make people follow his dream. He's leading this final operation for his fallen and current comrades and talks to his soldiers instead of just giving a big speach

The Irony that Levi is the strongest human among them and yet powerless to save each and everyone of his loved ones. His previous friends from underground, his squad and his captain. And more is yet to come, more is yet to lose. 🥲 He is a tragic character for me
Just like Eren said, him and Mikasa are so strong but that doesn't mean they are capable of everything, they still need everyone to become really strong which is great because that just show how human they are eventhough they have titan strenght.

Took me 6 minutes to notice the Hange memorial in the corner... that's incredible, 10/10
It's such a masterpiece that the author just keeps us the audience in a place where the survey corps are, the informations they learned, the feelings they had, the guessing of what the backstory really was, Isayama keeps us in a really good distance that we learn what the scouts learn, we keep moving on like the scouts but also we just can't see the whole picture like the scouts.
Also I love the image of Hange in front of the candles 🙏🙏🙏 Great homage for a great character
When I first saw this part, I hated Zeke, Reiner, and Bertolt, but at the same time, I thought it was a very good strategy.

I love Zeke's line, "I'm going for a perfect game" so much. It not only shows that this is a joke to him, and that he's essentially toying with the scouts, but also serves the purpose of telling the watcher that they have baseball or a similar sport in the world they come from so they are probably more advanced as a civilization. Good line.

So now we've arrived at what we've all been waiting for for so long...The Holy Trinity, The First Peak of AoT, Episode 16, 17 and 18
What else can be said that hasn't been said....
Inside Wall Maria, Bertholdt is rampaging and our scouts have no idea how to defeat him, and outside the Beast Titan is throwing rocks at the rest of the Survey Corps, decimating their numbers many times over with each throw.
I could go into a lot of things in this episode, but I think the dynamic between Levi and Erwin stands out and is the highlight of this episode for me and many others.
Erwin knows that the situation is hopeless without a great sacrifice, he knows that many will die on his command. He knew it all along while saying nothing, but I think the desire to just go into the basement circled through him so often that he just wasn't able to make a decision at that moment. Which is funny because we know Erwin as the superhuman commander who sacrificed his arm and would have sacrificed his life in court just to do a service to humanity. However, Erwin is also just a human being with wishes. A wish that his father and he have carried with him since childhood and is now so close to being fulfilled. A wish simply to go into the basement to learn the truth. I think no matter how you would have turned it, Erwin would have died(without the syringe) no matter whether with the knowledge of the truth or without. The difference is only that with one option, humanity behind the walls would have had a chance to win. Then why didn't Erwin just go to the basement? He gave his whole life for the victory of mankind with his wish of the truth in the back of his mind...I don't know how many times the Survey Corps was outspotted by the citizens and the government. Why shouldn't he just think of himself for once to fulfill his dream even if the situation demands just the opposite from him?
You see his desperation, his questioning of what is right for humanity and what is right for him, you see a broken man who has given everything to get to this moment...you see fear.
But then Levi comes...and orders him to die for humanity..."I'm making the choice, give up your dreams and die". This scene is so powerful because Levi takes Erwin's decision for him, let him know what is right snd creates a connection to his OVA...no Regrets
"If you begin to regret, you'll doll your choices and let others make decisions for you".
That's what Erwin said to Levi all those years ago and now Levi has to remind him of himself...
The last "Levi, thank you" is the figurative farewell of two comrades and you feel the Gratitude in Erwins voice... With Levis words and the promise that Levi will kill the Beast Titan he knows now what is right and goes to all the recruits for a final speech and final plan...
He immediately made it clear to all the recruits that there will be no glorious return and that the chances of success are very slim BUT that there is a spark of hope and as long as this is there humanity can survive. This final speech is to show the recruits before their death that their deeds have a meaning and that death takes everyone and only the deeds before really count. Erwin's speech should take away his fear and prepare him for death...but how well can one prepare for his death when his wish is so close but also so far away?
So Erwin's last plan works out...All remaining soldiers ride for final time with Erwin's shouting words: "My Soldiers Rage, My Soldiers Scream, My Soldiers Fight"
You can see his final thoughts about what could have been and fear on his face...because even someone like Erwin Smith is human in the end. He had selfish goals for sure...but to throw them away even if you have them for so long and willingly sacrifice yourself testifies to true greatness
And so the legend of the G.O.A.T., Commander Erwin Smith has been immortalized for all times

@@kingshark9057 i think season 4 is the closest to 10/10, but the first half of the third season definitely brought the season and show down for me.
I dont even think Erwin's desire to see the basement as selfish. He wanted to see it to prove his father's theory as true and therefore exonorate him. It was a son's wish to honor his father's legacy.
Plus it was in humanity's (inside the walls) best interest.
R.I.P to the greatest commander, Erwin Smith, and to all the fallen Scouts.

Next episode is one of the best episodes of all time from any series ever, strap yourselves in
Reiner's split mind was a key element in children becoming capable of genocide. If he hadn't pushed all his humanity into a box and created an inhuman side to drive them all to complete the mission, it probably never would have happened.
I think since he is half Marley, half Eldian. He think as Marley they have to hate Eldian. But his birth mother is an Eldian and he cares about his mother. Then, going to paradis island, know Eren, Armin, Mikasa, Sasha, Jean, Connie, Marco, and many other's people in the island that 100% Eldian make his split personality develops even more. Since him, and Annie and Bertholt kinda grow up there too(but Annie and Bertholt could control their mind that they are in a mission as a warrior). Reiner kinda consider himself one of paradis island as well since he is also Eldian.
I never noticed Moblit before until after the 4th watch or so. Seeing his ghost with the rest of Hange squad breaks my heart 😭
Edit agreed, I think Jean has the confidence, intelligence, leadership ability to be the next Erwin, and Armin the next Hange

After watching this with the perspective of season 4, I notice Erwins speech is a direct juxtaposition with the ideals of Zeke which we come to find out later. Such great breadcrumbs here as well as the camera zooming in on Floch at the end of Erwins speech.... God I love this story.

I like the fact that although Erwin said he would have to convince the soldiers like a con man to carry out the suicide charge, he actually told them with pure honesty and did the mission with their respect. I believe that's why they could kept going with a strong will even after our commander fell.
The conversations in this arc were fuckin HEAVY.
That realization is why so many people were against watching the after credit scene in that last pt1 ep, But doesnt matter now i guess. Great reaction as always cant wait for next episodes!!

I love the fact you guys remembered the Rohirrim charge whyle speaking about Survay Corps last counterattack. That's exactly how I feel whyle rewatching this scene again and again. There is something magical seeing the cavalerymen charging onto the overwhelming enemy force, the whole feeling of determination, and resolve, and decisiveness, the raw power of motion moving the people and horses toward their ultimate demise..
I wish there was a high-budget Hollywood adoptation of The Day of the Siege, the Polish film about the siege of Vena by the Ottomans in 1683, where the Polish Winged Hussars and Hungerian knights performed the largest cavalery charge in history numbering 15 to 20 thousend people. Sadly, nowadays historical dramas don't get enough attention and the bases of the conflicts are usually subverted due to the liberal interpretation of political correctness, but I hope one day we will be able to put emotions aside and enjoy the realistic depiction of the great moments of history, and not only fiction with clear devision betveen good and evil sides.

I just realized the picture of Hange, right there...
I lost count how many times I watched the scenes where Erwin starts to talk to Levi and then gives the speech before they charge to the Beast Titan. Every time I get goosebumps and emotional. Those scenes and that speech are THAT good. Incredibly well put together and the piano at the back makes it even more perfect. Truly memorable, there are so many meanings behind it. Erwin is another amazing complex character and the best commander. Another great reaction! Looking forward to the next!
if Berthold is 60 meter tall and Eren 15, Eren should reach to Berts knies in that scene. The animators made him a little small.
I used to think this too, but they mention that the more Eren transforms the smaller he gets in an earlier episode. Eren had already transformed to make the wall and then had to transform again after, so it makes sense that he's a little shorter than normal.
@@ryantoscano9739 he was the same size as Reiner in their battle, who is also 15 meters and was at full health. I can't accept that argument, sry.
They probably did it to show that there is literally nothing they can do. They wanted us to believe the whole situation was hopeless i guess.

Everyone debates 17 vs 18, but this is my fav episode. No doubt. The shock of the boulders being thrown, Levi and erwins discussion, and the greatest speech in AOT.
In the end, he give his heart, give up his dream and his father for humanity.
We all die.
But does that mean our lives are meaningless?
Does that mean that there was no point in our being born?
Would you say that of our slain comrades?
What about their lives? Were they meaningless?
