- Polaris General XP 1000 Test Review. Polaris pushed the envelope of sport performance in the sport utility SXS segment in 2016 with the release of the General 1000 featuring an engine and chassis based on the pure sport RZR S trail models. Never letting off the gas, Polaris further enhanced the General’s handling, suspension, and ability to conquer terrain with the release of the General XP 1000 for 2020, throwing a wrench in the plans of Yamaha and Can-Am to easily take over the class with their new RMAX and Commandeer models.
With a 2021 General XP 1000 Deluxe on our hands and a few rides under our belts, here’s our thoughts on why the General XP 1000 remains an extremely viable contender in the 1000cc sport utility segment.
Having wanted to test the General XP 1000 for over a year, we came away impressed with its performance. It is certainly as good, if not better, than we originally imagined. While it’s no longer the standalone single unit in the 64” sport/utility SXS segment, it should certainly be competitive with the Yamaha RMAX and Can-Am Commander come shootout time. In its second year in production, Polaris has also had time to work out any first year bugs.
If we were in the market for a seriously fun trail machine with the capability to camp, hunt, or get work done and we had a local Polaris dealer we loved, we’d feel real good about putting a 2021 General XP 1000 in our garage.

Awesome review!! It was a freezing fun day of ripping the General!
Always a lot of fun filming with you guys. Let's do it again soon.
Great review.....we are so HAPPY we bought a general. Because of supply chain issues we had to wait a LONG time. However, now that we have it and have went on some AWESOME rides....it was worth the wait!
Thanks for watching and sharing your story. We're excited for you.
Todays sport utility SXS are like sport machines with hitches and dump beds. Perhaps no other machine in the class exemplifies this better than the Polaris General XP 1000. Can't wait till shootout time! Meanwhile, we're looking forward to your comments and feedback regarding our 2021 Polaris General XP 1000 Test Review.
You guys do the best reviews! Looking forward to seeing one on the new Commander XT-P, or maybe a shootout with the XT-P and the General XP. Thanks for the amazing detail and information!
Thank you for the positive motivation!!! Hope you don't mind if we throw the RMAX in to that comparison.
Good review this category is just getting better every year finally! I love my new commander XT for stock suspension it drives and handles amazing for the trail riding we do in the PNW can wait for the shootout between all these machines.
@@jeffh7244 Thank you! We will have a test dropping on the commander before the shootout comes out. The commander definitely did not disappoint.
Great review, nice looking riding location, even if it was a tad cold
Glad you liked it. Yes, dirrty turtle is a fun place to ride. A little cold can't stop us.
This is by far the best G2 xp review out there. I have one on order. I’ve read negative comments on it’s short wheelbase in AWD pushing the the front end and breaking out the rear in in hardpack snow conditions, even though in your video it doesn’t seem too bad. But I did notice the back end steps out a few times, but you commented it “maintains direction”. So out of your experience, with other test reviews, is the Polaris AWD weaker in these slippery conditions than competitors 4X4/AWD? Smart lok seems to be pushing the boundaries.
I am looking at getting a general, How are you like it so far? I have a RZR and a Pro already but need something to follow and carry supplies.
Yamaha R Max has that little extra that makes it more interesting for me 🤩
Yamaha has an awesome machine. Hope you checked out our RMAX review and come back for the shootout. We will begin working on it after the can-Am test.
I was interested in the R max until I saw how to change the oil so much work lol
How would you say the leg room compares to the commander xtp. I’m 6’5” so i’m curious. Thanks for the info
The Polaris and Yamaha are a little roomier. The problem our tallest rider had with the Commander's interior was that his right knee was constantly touching the DESS key console at the bottom of the dash in front of the gear selector. If you're considering the Can-Am we wouldn't discourage it, just try one on. The interior of all the Commanders are basically the same except a few switches. If you have any other questions, please hit us back.
Does the Polaris General XP 1000 have a hard cab available? Or just front and rear glass?
We will find out for you
Love to see a comparison of this and the Yamaha R max 1000
OK but you have to give us a little bit of time. We have to finish testing the new Can-Am Commander 1000 XTP.
@@UTVonDemand or all three shootout?? getting harder and harder to pick a sport utility. a problem we enjoy
Do you think the 4 seater is ok for off road? I don’t need the 4 seat it just more room for stuff I would probably remove the back seats. I’m just worried 4 seat is toooo long
The 4 seat general is long, as are most 4 seaters. I guess it depends on where you typically ride. How tight is the terrain, Do you often turn around in tight situations. Are you concerned about framing out due to the longer wheelbase? If you feel you need a shorter wheelbase, you might want to look at the Yamaha RMAX4.
👍👍👍 enjoyed...
Thanks Doc. Always appreciate you coming to watch.
Good video
Glad you enjoyed it!
That was fun.
Yeah it waz.
Attempt to reach the oil filter on the back of the engine, cramped with the back of the cab. . I took the back wheel off and part of the fender flare to reach it. Can't see it so you are reaching blind, hopefully there is no mud or dust. One of many poor designs. I have heard of people cutting holes in their pickup bed to reach the gas tank to change the fuel pump, I was tempted to cut a hole in the back of the General cab to reach the oil filter next time, almost. Next time it will be the service department and the guy with the small hands.
Woo hoo!!!!!
Thought it went well with the jump shots.
@@UTVonDemand You’ve got a talent brother when you can take a General and show it can be a blast on a track!
@@flyingbriando5521 Couldn't have done it without the Viking and of course we have to credit Polaris.
Man I've towed 2 of these home with my Arctic Cat already. They'd be an awesome rig if they can FINALLY hold up in real wheelin. You know how much awful it is pulling a broke down side by side with a wheeler lol have to go skidder style spooling out both winches to get up ledges/mud holes/rock beds.
For now on we don't ride with any generals, funny enough the razor 800 is more reliable so long as it's belt down cook, runs hot as fck as does all the 600-800 Polaris twins. So hot at night when warmed up you can see the manifold glow red....but that little plastic machine is still better than the general come on Polaris you build machines than try to burn their riders alive in the razor yet they're still better than the general!!!! Lol
Lmao, tilt bed handle slam. Savage.
It is amazing that you advertising geniuses do not show a segment of driving one of these S U Vs a little to a lot slower, to enjoy the countryside. Why is everything blasting through, up and over at speed ? Enjoy, take pictures, get off or out , save the wear and tear on yourself and the machine....try it....show us!
Would you really find a bunch of slow driving entertaining? You can drive any machine slow. We try to demonstrate performance capability.
@@UTVonDemand well I take my 2 labs on 9 mile runs every evening hoping to see some wildlife and during the ride it’s nice if having a quite and capable sxs to boot I also like to see how steep I can climb without losing traction going slow anyway maybe throw in some sound checks and temperatures in cab results that I think may give more overview when you compare ? Otherwise keep up the good work looking forward to seeing your shootout ! Love my XTR ! 👍
@@markgiraldes4062 We really appreciate your response. This is some great perspective and feedback. I think you will find a bit more of what you're looking for in our shootout periour shootout And we will keep this advice in mind for future tests, especially in this category.
@@UTVonDemand FYI if anybody cares I’ve been using chip from tree services to cover about a 1/2 mile of dirt road around 6” deep makes a nice cushion and helps keep moisture in the forest floor neighbors love it to walk on also anyway looks awesome and it’s free ! The dump bed is so awesome for a Mimi truck that goes almost anywhere !👍
For you naysayers to any other thought than yours, go go go, enjoy your self centered self...go go go, learn nothing, go go faster faster.
Just run ps-4 extreme Polaris oil. Any real dealer wouldn’t be pushing maxima unless you are talking sc1
We see their oil in most of our local dealers.
Being a Polaris paid advertisement, I totally get not mentioning the competition. Luckily we have the comment section. While having umpteen million shock-adjustability settings is great if you're a professional fine tuning on a track with consistent terrain, in the real world, most SxS drivers will prefer the simple and easy 3 position adjustment that will cover most conditions and not require a degree from Shock Therapy. IQS on the RMAX 1000 LE is simply bliss.
Polaris and other slipper-clutch system rely on wheel spin for 'traction'. Yamaha allows for maximum traction without resorting to wheel spin.......not that it can't break the tires loose. RMAX interior simply blows away the General's in fit and finish.
Try watching and paying attention before you start trolling. We mentioned the Yamaha, Can-Am and the fact that we're doing a shoot out. Sorry if our videos look better than most of the crap you watch so you can only assume they are an advertisement. We have all 3 of these machines. Not one manufacturer has given us a dime except the sponsors in our video. Polaris was not one of them. If you continue feeling insecure please go watch our Yamaha RMAX test again. Thanks for trolling. Fail!
PS If you would like to discuss any of the details of these machines we would be happy to.🙂
@@UTVonDemand the beginning of the video has the disclaimer 'paid advertisement', which is the very first thing one sees. That can easily be misinterpreted as a paid advertisement for the product you're reviewing so sincere apologies as that's not your fault, it's UA-cam's. I guess I was focused on 13:34 where I thought you mentioned having to cut out the switches but made no mention of the RMAX's precut switch locations. I do like watching your channel but that's a pretty bold statement to make that the other channels that I watch are crap. I comment on those channels as well, just like I do yours, and I have to say, yours is the first to actually attack me for my opinion (out of the professional high-subscriber ones). We're humans after all and we all make mistakes, including me. BTW, I'm not one of those that down-voted your video. While it's obvious I'm a Yamaha zealot, I'm not going to downvote your video because it's showing a competing model.
@@MassiveOverkill Not attacking you but we are defensive when it comes to false claims of bias, Like insinuating Polaris paid for this, or we did not mention the competition. Please forgive us if our verbal judo is strong. UA-cam forces us to use a paid product placement disclaimer anytime there are any sponsors in a video. We would never exceptMoney from a manufacturer for a test that they are involved or for a directly competitive machine. We work extremely hard to prevent bias In our content. Our reputation is everything. I am sure you understand. Feel free to shoot me your number through DM On Instagram If you would like to discuss these machines more at length. No hard feelings.
@@UTVonDemand I get it and you have every right to defend yourself with full zeal, I've been there plenty of times!! I'll try to watch your videos after a 2nd cup of coffee (after all not having enough coffee is a great excuse). No hard feelings whatsoever!!!
How many fucking adds can you fit into a video?
That's the Max
