Awesome vid Jake. I must add that piracy in Somalia started as a way to deter foreign vessels from fishing in their sovereign waters. Since the advent of piracy, fisherman have seen an increase in their harvests in Somalia, Kenya even as far as Tanzania. Goes to show: if you steal fruit off a tree growing in another man`s yard, you can`t curse his dog when it bites you.
"goverments couldnt stand against the big corporations" isnt that a innocent way of saying those goverments got bribed to look away at those corporation's exploitation= corruption. and the locals took over. i don't condone violence in any way but what do those corporations and governments think would happen.
this should happen just that i hope rather than crew mates getting kidnapped it's the corporate executives and board of directors along with government officials that are corrupt
As a latin american i think this, you could stand up for your people and don't take the bribe...so the big company just puts money on other candidate for the next elections, you lose. Everyone hates you and the big company wins. Or you don't lose, but your country suffers a massive embargo and everyone hates you. Or the media, mostly foreign own, gets the order to make you look bad anyway. I don't think is different in Africa
I wish companies were just simply stealing fish or passing through corridors with no permission/fees. Most don't care about that now. The most scariest thing about what corporations are doing in the horn of Africa coast line is the dumping of toxic/nuclear waste in these waters. I know that cancer rates have sky rocketed amongst coastal people in my country. The countries here are already poor but atleast capable of some level of subsistence. Adding another problem will just damage it more in the long run.

I just the saw title of this video. Still I didn't watch it . I'm one of your subscribers who's from Somalia🇸🇴. We have the longest cost in Africa and we don't have a powerful government which controls who uses our ocean. A lot of governments and cooperations use our sea as dumping ground and others take our natural resources( fish and other valuable resources in our sea). So I'm proud to be a pirate defending he's ocean from stupid western and Chinese ships.
A very important aspect of the piracy you describe is the fact, that containerships and oiltankers sailing around Africa for decades have made huge amounts of money dumping illegal toxic chemical and nuclear waste while sailing around Africa's coast. This has destroyed the fishing industry, that has been the backbone of these countries for centuries. When they called themselves "Saviors of the sea" it was because they actually tried to be.
@@rly.shiesty na I don't think so man. People click when the title can grab their attention. I've been watching him for over a year and even I skip videos if the title isn't catchy.

My uncle ran into some of those guys. They opened fire on his boat. He didn't know what to do except stick his hands up and hope for the best. Out of nowhere a Russian fighter plane came in and fired on their boat and sank it. As they were being shot at he took off and watched as the plane kept shooting till all were floating dead. He took pictures of their dead bodies
In West Africa - Nigeria, Ivory Coast, the problem caused by oil majors doesn’t only concern the damage done upstream, crude and oil products are bought and sold via tenders and the local oil business can’t compete in them, ie can’t pay or sell at the same prices as Shell, TotalFinaElf, ChevTex, etc.
If you’re wondering why ships don’t just arm themselves to defend against pirates, there’s multiple factors that make it difficult but simply one factor is these ships go into a number of different countries that may not allow armed ships to enter their port. Basically it’s just a lot of headache to legally be armed on a ship while still conducting international business with several countries.
And there’s one other reason for that most of these which is why a lot of countries do not like the United States in the first place the second amendment something that most top people dread hate and most likely fear the most because they know if citizens get weapons if anything goes wrong the first one to go is the leader and not only the leaders the underlings to the nobles. That’s the real reason why it’s a hassle.
First time being part of the earliest people to watch your videos just when its uploaded. watching this 7min right after upload. love your content bro.
I have zero sympathy for these oil companies anyways considering we don’t get a dime out of it and make it even worse we’re paying almost over $10 of gas per gallon and we’re getting a good water diddley squat what does that tell you, they’re screwing us both.
The private security, anti pirate business is very profitable. Merchant ships have been armed for centuries, but current governments FAIL to protect shipping and HUNT pirates AND don't allow ships to arm their crews effectively. Currently, the only option is to add arms and security before entering the dangerous areas around Africa, Arabia and Asia. But there are more modern tools, that are not classified as arms and can stay on board. LRAD are nice for publicity heavy cruise ships, they use a focused audio beam with a range up to 800m, besides being very loud, they can disrupt the inner ear, letting people lose balance and get dizzy. Long range IR lasers are more effective, leaving pirates blind far out at sea, effectively taking them out. But leaving less bullet holes.
word. not a solution. Just more money for the gun industry. The real way to stop pirates is to stop bad business practices. Hire locals, respect the sovereignty and borders of nations.
@@brotherblaze8799 The pirates operate far outside their borders. Inside those borders, those countries would like to tax ships, but can't even provide security. The gun industry delivers the tools to be free from opression by your own or other governments and other criminals, by making THEM think about their mortality. Your can't hire locals, neither as workers or security. Local security would just betray you. Local workers are not capable of even stacking boxes correctly. These countries are so backwards, because of a lack of education - and tribal leaders that like to keep people stupid and easy to govern/lie to, by burning down schools. The only real solution would be to take out their warlords and organized crime and introduce more education.
Honestly while i agree that ships should be allowed to arm themselves, Im happy that right now they dont, especially those hauling oil. I struggle to take a hard stance against sinking a few oil tankers.
@@pteppig You hit the nail on the head. You right about the gun industry. I wouldn't be here if my haitian ancestors didn't have guns to use against their immoral oppressors. Your definitely right about education but your exaggerating a little bit. They are not doing rocket science they just need job training. Also instead of "we".. the companies have a ethical obligation to invest in the same communities they exploit. If they are exploiting oil in Nigeria then they should also have to invest in education which is mutually beneficial for them & the communities they operate in. They will gain loyalty and favor for not just being an profit gaining company, but a pillar to the communities and they will get an educated workforce. Sounds fair ?

To think that the biggest and most powerful countries in the modern world who also constantly bicker and complain as well as threatening to fight one another actually banded together to deal with a place so economically downtrodden like Somalia. Makes you think.
It’s because they were losing so much money they got freaking angry upset so they went after him for it but you know personally that’s actually their fault anyways they could’ve stopped that but no.
Great video essay. I would add to Nigeria's pirate problem was a failure of the the national government to share the wealth generated by oil with the Nigerian people ,in addition to, creating laws that enforced environmental regulation and ensured a certain percentage of oil based jobs went to the Nigerian people.

I agree, but why do they have to torture the workers they capture? These people aren't the corporation, they're just trying to make a living.
This is one of the most alarming things to encounter. I would love to think that we are just good people that do not engage in stealing, robbing, etc. but perhaps that only comes from a place where those things are not necessary to survive or overcome your current situation.
They wouldn't be in that situation if you first world countries weren't abusive dix to 3rd world countries.

"Governments need to maintain a monopoly on violence". I thought that was a very insightful line.
Awesome vid Jake. I must add that piracy in Somalia started as a way to deter foreign vessels from fishing in their sovereign waters. Since the advent of piracy, fisherman have seen an increase in their harvests in Somalia, Kenya even as far as Tanzania. Goes to show: if you steal fruit off a tree growing in another man`s yard, you can`t curse his dog when it bites you.
good for them, working hard for their families. we love to see it.
I love how smoothly Jake switches to ads 😆 thats a real piracy 😆

I just the saw title of this video. Still I didn't watch it . I'm one of your subscribers who's from Somalia🇸🇴. We have the longest cost in Africa and we don't have a powerful government which controls who uses our ocean. A lot of governments and cooperations use our sea as dumping ground and others take our natural resources( fish and other valuable resources in our sea).

Don’t hate the people, hate the orders in place that influence them to live the lives of criminals. Piracy is a very fascinating form of crime imo.

For those oil pirates they have every right to steal back from the people that exploited their land
I have zero sympathy for these oil companies anyways considering we don’t get a dime out of it and make it even worse we’re paying almost over $10 of gas per gallon and we’re getting a good water diddley squat what does that tell you, they’re screwing us both.
Who has a small boat and wants to go on an adventure?
@@brotherblaze8799 what a load bullshit they are cold blooded killers only solution is a bullet to the head
