Tennant Creek to Wauchope / Road Trains and Wet Wheels - Northern Territory

- Опубліковано 2 бер 2023
- Tennant Creek and the surrounding areas in the Northern Territory of Australia has had a great deal of rain during the months of February and very early March. Due to the amount of rain, the roads in the area were starting to fall apart and develop holes in the bitumen surface making it a challenge to drive through flooded sections of road without falling into the holes.
This video shows the section of road from Tennant Creek south 114kms to Wauchope and how the flood waters have made it a challenge for us to get home in our road train.

Hi Mick, thank you for the video showing the current NT flood situation in basically real time. Most people in Australia wouldn't have any idea about the current flooding in the NT. Unfortunately with the main stream news services in the country, whatever happens in the NT isn't considered news worthy. Keep up the great work and stay safe
Verry true never here NT news here in Victoria.
@@goldentrowel1968 hence we have UA-cam and the like... Journalists nowadays pander to .....
Yes no one hears about it.
Cheers, glad you enjoyed the info/news.
Very true, I had no idea. Only croc attacks hit the news.
Fantastic to see the country in such great health.
That Mack sounds great when your giving it the juice!
Amphibious Frieght
Cheers.
Thanks for getting the freight to us in Darwin despite the conditions. About 12 -13 months ago since 7.5 days in a roadtrain series. Appreciated Mick and co-driver.
Than k you, it all creates memories forever.
To those outside of Australia ,these conditions may seem bizarre, yet all in a days , weeks etc work of long haul Truck Drivers. As a driver it's fascinating watching, each environment different and a new challenge.I moved in my chair dodging the soft edge on the side of the road ! Much enjoy the effort you make Mick.
Cheers mate, thank you.
Greetings from L.A California. Thanks for video.
You are welcome, thanks for watching.
Just watched this with my daughter-in-law who had considered driving up to Darwin the other day. She saw this and is so glad she didnt, she said she'd have been terrified. What a great video, again, thankyou. Cheers Cheryl and Helen. 🙂
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you.
Agree with a previous comment about the lack of media coverage on this fairly unique event. We traveled from Marree SA to the Gulf via Stuart & Barkly Highways after Christmas. Roads had just reopened. We were stunned by the amount of water around - absolutely spectacular!
It is a great sight to see, love the country up there.
The environment must be happy to have all that rain.
it will do the country so much good, great to see.
Many thanks Mick - appreciate so other motorists know what's happening almost in real time.
Your welcome.
Greatings from ecuador 👍
Greetings to you as well.
Really enjoy the insight of life on the road, incredible to see so much flooding, which we heard very little about. Looking forward to your next videos.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I was a FIFO in Derby from Brisbane, 3 months on 2 weeks off for 3 years in 2011. Free flights home but decided to take my car and drive home everytime at my expense, 4500klm each way, some thought i was insane. But seeing how the land can change from dry to wet, it was the best experience i ever had, it never got tiring. Keep up the good work Mick & Sally.
You are correct about the change in the land Dean, it changes many times a trip as you found.👍
I lived at Moree for 7 years or so. Reminds me so much of the floods there. Life on the road in these situations is realy hard. Hope it dries out soon up there. Take care, and thank you for sharing.
Cheers, glad you liked it. The water had all but gone on my trip the following week.
New Subscriber and we hit the bell, awesome stuff guys, took me rightback to my driving days of driving Road trains, retired now but still have my MC Licence🤫, keep on trucking, thankyou for the update stay safe, not on the news in Tasmania only found out on UA-cam and from you guys, stay safe guys, I'll be watching 🙂

Thanks for sharing the view Mick, looking over the shoulder of the gold bulldog. An amazing amount of water around.
Lots of water, most of it was gone the following trip.
We were thinking about heading up the track to Darwin but now have decided not a good idea. Thanks for posting Mick. Cheers mate 🍺🍷👍🇦🇺
Unless there is more rain the road will return to normal in a very short time.

Was great to see the area getting such a good drink.
Having driven that road a few times but never seen it like that. Thank you for posting.

Very, very lucky the roads were still there!

Glad you made it safely and thanks for the video. Stay safe out there.
Thank you 👍
There's flooding in south africa as well 😢
Roads have been closed and damage to property , thanks for the content 🙏
Have a fantastic weekend and see you on the next one 👍 Greetings from south africa 🇿🇦 🍻
It amazes me the amount of rain that is falling in so many different places and countries, where does it all come from?
@JustCruisin with Mick & Sally
It seems as the earth is going through a cycle of events , floods in many countries as well as earthquakes and some parts of Africa are in a drought 😢
@@yusufsayed1583 Things change so quickly while one part floods the other is so dry.
Thank you mick we are not getting this on the news more trucks more videos .no trip up that way for me .
Other than a few pot holes, things will be back to normal within the week.
Amazing flooding, was interested to see the creek flow at Bonny Well, just south of Kurundi Rd as in 60's & 70's a raging river of water.
After rains was always great swimming holes. On a hot summers weekend worth the drive from TC for a day.
The Wauchope Hotel always a cold beer.
Wycliffe Well started out as a market garden.
Much like Barry Caves on the Barkly..prices were thru the roof compared to everywhere else.
Driving the Stuart and Barkly Highways today is so very different to 60&70's.
Injoy you're videos.
Thank you Dennis, yes things are very much different today than what is was back in the 60s although I think Bonney Well would be similar. Wauchope has great meals to go with that cold beer 😁😁
Hi Mick
Awesome stuff Mate you must have a great read of the roads Mate.

Great video Mick i can,t believe it,s so wet in the NT keep up the good work.
Thanks, will do! The top end of Western Australia is also getting lots of rain I believe.
Experience helped by the good old bulldog on the nose got you through 👍. Again! Another great video
Thanks 👍
Did you notice we had a gold dog up front, not the normal silver one?
Makes for a slow old trip Mick BUT still quicker than the route you did last year up thru NSW/ QLD. Thanks for the video 👍
You bet, we lost some time but we still made it home safely.
Mick and Sally at least your truck is wash now also it looks fun to do as well getting to see the NT flooded sad for the people that have there houses flooded
All part of life unfortunately.
hey thanks for the post from you here in melbourne really dont know what to believe
The country side will thrive for some time because of all the water, bit like our rivers, mother nature at it's best.
Hats off to any truckie who the country stocked with goods.
Cheers, thank you.
Skill such skill , it’s a wonder to see and nature is astonishing , but the car in the middle was different let’s say . 👍❤️
Yes, you are right
Holy cow... that's insane!!!
We dont watch the news down here in Melbourne... but damn..... this is crazy!
Most of the water was all gone by the time we got there the following week.
G,day Mick!! Great job and great video as usual!! If you want to really know conditions then ask a truckie!! They know whats going on. A hell of a lot of water.
Take care of yourself and safe travels!!
Thanks 👍
Had no idea it was this bad, nothing said about it on our news services. Thanks
There today, gone tomorrow and no one hurt so the news would most probably think it was no news.
Victoria river peaked at 17 meters last week in Kalkarindji, Dagaragu thigh deep, Pigen hole just roofs visible. Hence the evacuations. Victoria Highway was closed and Buntine is still closed but we have no idea if the bridge is still at the Thompson as that got pretty badly smashed a few weeks ago. Camfield... again still under but no idea if there is a bridge there at all.
@@NortyNige Victoria River has been hit hard with the rain, incredible to see the photos from that area.
Wow. Rain in NT in March. Good to see. It was 40 years ago when I was in NT working and I got stuck in TC
Tennant Creek has had a lot of rain during this current wet season.
Hi Mick. Thanks for another great video. Must be quite nerving driving through floodwaters like that. We have had it worse than that in Northland, Corromandel and the Hawkes Ba. Wonder what the world is coming to. Hope that the weather improves for you when you go on your trip to Victoria. Drive safely. All the best from Rotorua
Thanks, as long as we can see the bottom the nerves stay under control 👍
Winter will soon be here so lets hope it all improves as we move towards the change in seasons.
It’s an excellent wet season across the whole of northern Australia enough to keep it green until the next good wet.
The pain is now with water everywhere but the gain will last a lot longer.
Yep, so good for the country. The road are now falling apart form so much water but they are repairable.
That Superliner built tough ehy. Took it like a champ and got through the trouble without a hitch but of course, that was some excellent driving there. Taking that triple through flooded roads.
Cattle truckies would want someone like you up on NT battling corrugations and crocs! Ahahahahahaha. Stay safe Mick!
Cheers, thanks
thanks for the update. least they had it open and you were driving carefully. not like what they did with the Princes Highway over January
You are welcome. Like they say, drive to the conditions.
Wow what a ride! I can see holes forming in the roads just to keep you two on the edge of your seats. Again top footage. Next time hire a house boat!
Glad you enjoyed it. The water may not be deep in places but it is the holes that you noticed that can cause issues that we don't want.
Hi Sally,hi Mick.
Great to let us drive with , through that fantastic continent.
We, Andrea & me, even a truckin' couple in Germany, enjoy every of your movies.
Next year, we're visiting Australia, even want to travel on Stuart highway, for sure.
Tell me, is ist dangerous , cause of flooding roads, travelling in a car, in beginning of January, normally?
Greetings from the other side of the world👋
Jürgen &Andrea
You will enjoy Australia when you get there. As long as you do not drive through flooded creeks and flood ways, there is no danger to travel any road in Australia. January is our hottest month here in Australia, so if going that way, be prepared with plenty of water.
So... *That´s where all our water went to???*
No wonder we're so thirsty down here, it hasn't rained in months!
*_Greetings from Mexico._*
Greeting to you, we have had plenty of water Australia wide in the last 12 months, come and get some 😁👌
Excellent footage and no wonder your heart would have been in your mouth driving through that. So, I guessing the quick trip I was planning up that way in my Hyundai i30 will have to be postponed then. :-)
It will all be over in a day or two at the most. Could always put bigger wheels on the Hyundai.....
Thinking of everyone across the Barkly. Stay safe.
You too👌
Hey Mick good video mate , just a little bit of water, looks like Lake Eyre getting more water
Plenty of water for everyone.
wow lots of r
oad water i liverd in tennant ck for a few years never seen rain like that
Wettest for me as well. Tennant Creek has had a very wet year this wet season.
Good vid mate, shouda tackin a right at Ali Corung , apparently there’s a great pub tthere and the people are great😂, seriously Devils Marbles hotel is an oasis in the middle of nowhere, love that place 🤙
Great meals from the Devils Marbles pub.
Looks like another few million dollars to be spent repairing/upgrading the Stuart Hwy, after this is all over. That's the worst of living in a big city like Melbourne, if it didn't happen within a hundred kilometres, then it didn't happen at all according to the Big Four networks. We never get to know what is really happening in our own country, let alone the rest of the world. Thanks to people like you Mick, we can.
Thank you, glad you found it interesting and informative 👍
Well, a 7 day 2 up drive thru Queensland might have been interesting....think of the $ overtime $ LOL, boss would have been ever so happy "Not"
But with them last and recent flooding it must surely do wonders for the countries water table. But, them slaphappy wipers would drive me more crazy. Another experience..Cheers guys.👍
I am with you about the wipers, drives us mad at times.
It’s fairly hectic up there at the moment. I came through there the day before you guys did and got caught for an hour north or tennant. Took half an hour to get from tennant to threeways. It will be interesting to see what it’s like once I leave Adelaide Wednesday.
You will be a day ahead of us again, keep safe up there👍
Always mate. Besides, gotta make sure Katherine and Alice Springs get their bread 😂
@@johnobrooks1138 so true😁😁
Just a comparison! Some of the deepest water wasn't far up the guide posts but stretched for quite a way. Where I am in NSW the water can be over the guide post and stretch about 30feet across. It's all about knowledge, experience and professionalism!
This area is so flat that it takes a huge amount of rain to create great depths of water.
Wow, it's not very often that you see an Egret wading on the Stuart Hwy! I'll be up that way in just over a month in my red 60 series Landcruiser. 1- I'll keep an eye out for ABC Transport triple road trains (I'm guessing that's what you drive) 2- I'm sure the worst of it will be long gone in a month, but it'll probably still be quite green...
You will see plenty of ABC triples up there, yes that was what I drive. It has been green up there now for months and will probably stay that way for a long way to come. Enjoy your trip when you do it.

No good for the trucking buisness! I bet the truck was clean underneath! Thank you for that, take care.
Just one more thing to contend with, that's trucking for you.
Were they close to closing the road or does the water subside pretty quickly up there? I agree with the other comments, thank you for showing us this or we would have had no idea about what's happening in that part of the world. Glad you made it back safely!
Unless they close the road while we are on it, we don't really know what is happening. The water will drop quickly although the road has been shut many times for several hours at a time during previous rain events.
I would love to do some Trucking in Australia.
Like you some would like to give it a go but others would never come near one.
Wow.
I'm guessing that you're getting updates on it all the whole way along as it's not like you can turn around if you come across a part you can't drive through.
No turning around, that is for sure. Some parts of the road was closer earlier but trucks could get through while cars had to wait it out.
15min, depth said 20cm flood level, Mick. Earlier the buzzer started going off, was that a limiter of some sort?
Would presume, so long as the wake caused by speed is sorted, would you drive all day in still calm water too.
The buzzer was caused by the traction control in the truck being engaged.
Driving in any water isn't my preferred method of driving. If there was a huge amount of water then I would park up.
A bientôt, JPhB.
The siren that you heard was telling us that we had selected traction control in the truck, something that we did just in case the road became slippery. I love the middle of Australia but the top coastal areas of Western Australia is also outstanding and spectacular to me. Flooding in this area is not unusual this time of the year but perhaps not to this extent.
@@justcruisinwithmicksally837 Merci Mick !😉
Good ta see the country getting a drink. Pity about the non all weather roads but. How much do you reckon you lost?
The country will benefit from the drink for months to come. We didn't lose anything.
great video and do you have vinter ore ? am living on different side of the planet and we have sort of spring so I think you have winter coming ? but im sorry if I get it wrong
We have just finished our summer so winter is only 3 months away now.
Wow good video Mick, I been up and down there many times but never seen water like that . Q time ??? , how often do you do a run in the truck, you had many weeks chasing the Murray River flood.
I do Darwin each week so as you could imagine the River videos were a bit like burning the candle from both ends.
@@justcruisinwithmicksally837 OK Good one Mick, always look forward to your video's
That's a lot of water. What was the buzzer going off for half way through a large water crossing. That is jack knifing material there. Did it ever feel loose under you when going through them
All good as we drove through the water, slow speed is the trick. The buzzer was just reminding us that we had the traction control engaged in the truck drive line.
Just drove the Victoria hiway
You see from the mud and debris in the trees that the water was 4 to 5 meters over the road
Be safe out there.
Another Exelant video mick
What was the alarm buzzer for and why was it going off?
Glad you liked the video.
The buzzer was to let the drive know that he had engaged the traction control in the truck drive line just in case we got into a sticky situation that wanted to stop us in our tracks.
thanks for expaining that
An added question Mick. Have you any idea where all that water eventually ends up ?
Not really, I would assume down into the water table but don't quote me on that.
Gee it must be so frustrating for the driver having to slow down and get going again and hard on the truck, where you would normally be rolling along at a a steady speed, not to mention the danger of someone forces you off the road. So much water it’s unbelievable. PS Ime amazed they didn’t close the road
Parts were closed so we heard, but we had no issues with the truck. Cars were not able to get through. Night time driving that we did was a bit scary at times, hard to see flooded waterways in the headlights until you are right on them.
Holy crap that’s a lot of water in the middle of Australia, and not one bit was harvested 🧐🤷♂️
Yes so much water but just too hard to harvest unfortunately.
Gee they sure have copped some rain. We here in Alice have had none.
Typical outback rain storms and events, so unpredictable. I see people camping in creek beds and wonder if they know how the rain works up that way.
👍
Cheers
9:40 does that sign show how high the water stands? Does that mean people drife thru there with water above 1M depth still? I bet a car would get washed away from the water stream?
The signs should tell people with any sense to keep out of it.
Why do people in cars think they can get through this, it’s hard enough in a big rig . Enjoy your vid Mick , keep safe.
Glad you enjoyed it.
👍👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
Wet up that way again now.
Hi Mick, Just thought to ask you something as you are a real time driver on the field day to day. How demanding is the need of truck drivers here in Aus at the moment?
I have a dream to become a driver one day. I know its not what we think out there when you are truely in the game. But i like to know how demanding is the proffesion at the moment.
Thanks in Advance! Niv.
There is a huge shortage of good truck drivers Australia wide and will continue that way for a long time.
#1 in comment section🤓
Cheers.
Did they issue flotation devices or fishing gear?
We had our own boat but after seeing this we thought we needed a bigger one.
how much time does this add to your trip?
Over this short distance not a lot, perhaps half an hour.
I'm surprised you didn't get overtaken by a P-plater in a Hi-Lux.
Go the P-Plater
Some of these potholes look a bit nasty, and how much longer time did it add to the trip from one old truckie to another 🤔.
It was about an extra half an hour or so but the pot holes are getting bigger by the day now. There is some serious road repairs needed up there.

Hopefully it wasn't to bad, like it was last year, with your 7.5days in a road train
So much rain up there to date, the roads are now starting to fall apart from water damage and there is nowhere for the water to go as the ground is saturated. It can't rain forever, well I would hope not.

T/creek to Wauchope - reminds me of back in the 90's of the cannonball run promoted by Alan Moffat. There was a rumour that one of the cars competing travelled this 114klm leg in 23 minutes. Can anyone support this?
I can help with information on that but if it was true it would have been one hell of a rough ride.
Furphy more like.
The flood around the 10-11 minute mark almost drowned my car. Signed as 20cm deep, was 50cm.
Can never be too careful, sounds like you were lucky.
@@justcruisinwithmicksally837 very lucky yes.
Mid West Gascoyne W.A. Here, we hear absolutely nothing about the weather up there. Edit : That gauge at 15:00 was at 300 mm.
Yes 300mm👍, lot of water around.
@10:36 13:20 14:35 _its a very scary drive_ 😳
For some it could be but if you know what you are doing and taking nothing for granted then it isn't so bad.👌
Hi, how deep, could a std, car drive through it? thanks
How long is a piece of string? If I was in a standard car, I would not go through any water that was much more than 100mm deep just in case there was a hole that I fell into.
Funny how the territorians pronounce Wauchope! They call it, walkup!
Sure do, a real aboriginal name I suspect.
You have such a big vehicle and you are still going slowly in very shallow waters. 😞
Must always be on the lookout for a washed out section of road. Such a heavy rig can't stop in a short distance.
Not much chance of the road wheels over heating!
Nice and cook making punctures rare.😄😄
